TVs in the garage seem to be the new fad? A bunch of my neihbors have them (hell the guy who owned my house before me had one) but I have no interest in that. If I want to watch TV, I'll go into the house. If I'm in the garage its to get something done or because I'm going somewhere. If I want background noise I'll turn on a radio.

Any of you guys have a flat screen tv in your cold garage or shop? I have a big flat screen I want to put in our 30' x 40' garage that is not heated in the winter. I have heard both ways , yes and no. Just wondering what some of you have experienced. Thanks
No problems here in Alaska with a TV at really cold temperatures. I currently heat my detached workshop with wood until I get around to hooking up natural gas. I just don't turn on the TV until the temperature is above freezing. The shop is very well insulated, R69+ in attic, R38 walls (4" XPS on exterior of building), and after a week of no heating and sub zero temps with lows down to -10 to -25F the inside temp virtually never falls below 29F. TV works like a champ and I purchased the cheapest 40" Best Buy had about 5 years ago. A Best Buy sales guy told me if I had any concerns about it purchase the warranty plan and if the TV (flat screen) fails just make sure all of the condensation inside the TV evaporates before bringing it in for replacement. I don't purchase warranty plans, ever, and didn't this time either.

My TV is wired to a laptop in the house and is for internet research, music, radio, and documentaries; background noise basically. I don't really watch it, just listen to it. Sometimes the same documentary will play for hours and I learn something new each time since I don't pay much attention to it.

TV, in the garage? It would be a distraction and a Safety Hazard. The garage is a place to work or just get away from the boring routine. I do have a radio and a few music CD’s.

I have a 55" hung from the rafters in my small double garage, I mainly use it with a Chromecast and Spotify to play music through the surround sound, but sometimes it's nice when doing something low energy like cleaning to have a simple youtube video playing in the background.

I've said it in other threads, and I'll say it again... If I ever move, I probably won't do the TV thing again. I just don't use it very much.

And to go a step further, if I ever move, I will probably just leave the TV on the wall. It took 3 of us to get it up there, and it's totally not worth the effort to bring it back down, what with the prices of new TVs now...

Would only be useful for streaming music, or the occasional YouTube video showing me how to do something.

I have no TV and no radio, stereo in my garage. My neighbor noticed it when he came to work with me on a project repairing his truck. He even asked if he could bring his stereo up and I said sure. When I work in my shop alone no problem I am out there for my sanity and escape from the noise in the house where my wife has to have a TV on from the moment she gets up in the morning until she goes to bed at night. For me it is just noise and I worked in noise for 45 years working either on cars or aircraft. I want it quiet. Sure working on vehicles can be noisy but that is short term

I've always been firmly in the "no TV" camp, but I did finally add one to my shop last week. My daughter spends a fair amount of time out there with me; her time being a mix of coloring, learning a little about automotive work, and watching cartoons on my phone. We had a 32" flat screen sitting idle in a closet, so I just moved it to the shop and hooked it up. I get my phone back, and she gets a larger screen to watch cartoons on.

SO shakes her head when I am in Costco…..hey honey, the 75” is only 1300 now…..she goes you just got the 65…..yeah you can have that one upstairs? What we gonna do with the 43? Oh it can go in the garage over the window…..but that won’t fit with the speakers…..oh for now…..there’s some Polk bookcase speakers I want too…….

no wonder she dont go into the TV section at Costco with me……guess she can’t handle my reasoning….

To each their own but I wouldn't be without a TV or radio in the shop. Music is soothing and relaxing to me, helps keep my sanity.

A TV can be a great tool if you choose it to be. Being able to stream Youtube for a repair or searching the 'net for available parts at the local parts store or a run to Summit. Roku and using it as a computer monitor have opened doors to make life easier.

When it comes to entertainment, some of us will relax in our shop or garage. Some might watch a game with friends and have a few cold ones away from the women folk. Many times when the wife is at work and I'm dirty from working on something, I grab something to eat from the house and head back out to the garage. I'll fire up the PC and surf GJ while I'm eating lunch in the garage.

Not tracking stuff into the house means no messes for the Mrs. happy wife, happy life.

I added a TV to my garage too. Like others have mentioned, I don't really watch much on it. Occasionally, I will watch a youtube about something I am working on and find that helpful. I also had a roku sound bar floating around and added it under the TV and that gets used daily for music. I use the tv/roku for pandora and spotify almost daily.

My 5 year old daughter also likes to come out in the garage and hangout while I am working and she will watch cartoons while she is out there. She quite often looks forward to coming out in the garage and watching a show while I work. I figure its a win. She is out of mom's hair, she asks me lots of questions, we get to spend time together.

I honestly rarely use the TV for myself to watch anything, really just for music.

I use the radio/MP-3 player in my garage for music & my laptop if I need to see how to do something I am working on.
I used to use a laptop in the garage for Youtube and such but after replacing 2 batteries, I bought a refurbished PC with Windows 10 from Best Buy for about $250 and wireless keyboard/mouse for about $20-30. I now use the TV as a monitor.

I used to be against having a TV in my shop, but my wife talked me into it a few years ago. To my surprise, it's great for a whole bunch of reasons already listed in this thread.

I'm happy I did it and would do it again without question.

I have one hooked up to an old laptop. I use it to cruise garage journal and other forums, and primarily listen to music on. Sometimes I'll jump on YouTube with it. It's really only a distraction if you let it be, and can definitely be a motivator to head out to the shop, take a look at other peoples projects while having your morning caffeine as you think about and plan your day.

I've had a 42" and then a 46" because they were extra, older (non-smart) TV's that we weren't using. If this one dies, I'll probably get a smaller 32" smart TV for $100. Good enough for the amount I use it.

You can see it in the top right of the photo. The previous owner of the garage had a bracket up there already. The TV is a 42" LCD from probably about 10 years ago. I'm not sure if it is even 1080 or it is 720p. Either way, for a garage TV it pairs well with a set of speakers and my laptop.

It's nice to have something on the garage while I'm working out there.

Yep. When they are done in the living room they go to the garage. Wall mount, usually playing pandora.

Can't stand being in a shop with a tv. All they do is make any job take WAY longer. If I'm working, I want to focus, not be distracted by the tv. A radio on low is fine, but that's it.

I know a guy with a tv in his shop and he sits and watches it while his buds work on the cars. Not much gets done there because it's always "hey check this out, this guy dropped a xyz in a abc".

I have one hanging from the ceiling. Mostly used to get through the menus on my ROKU so I can stream music, but also occasionally handy to Youtube a project I'm working on. Way nicer than having to use the phone to do that. The TV was free and I purchased small speakers, a subwoofer and receiver used at Goodwill for $50 or so all in. I enjoy having some decent sound in the garage. I don't play it loud, but I like having it on in the background sometimes.

I have a lounge area in my shop with TV but it rarely gets used. Out in the sticks and the shop is more like a living room with cars and tools in it.
In my garage there's no TV. If I'm in there fir any length of time I'm working on something so it wouldn't get watched.

I really don't want a TV out there. I don't watch any TV anyway. Cut the cord about a decade ago. Anymore you do need a computer however. No one puts a book in the box anymore and you need to look things up online....man I hate that. I don't have one yet, but I have had to go back to the house to look up how to change something.

Now music on the other hand I MUST have music. But the music I listen to you will never hear on any radio. Depending on the job it may be jazz, blues, old country, 50's, or vintage music of another nature. I really enjoy what I listen to that is "of another nature". I can't really describe it, but I will link a video of it.

If you are worried about it don't be. Modern music is much more vulgar words....this is classy. There are some great things out there that so many people have never listened to, this is good stuff.

My rear projection tv from 2006 that I have in the shop is dying a slow death.

It will be nice to finally replace it with something that can be wall mounted.

Oh yeah! Although I don't listen to much music in the garage lately (or elsewhere) but when I do, I have some cds in the garage that are OLD blues and gospel! The kind that'll make you moan and groan:). When I'm out cruising I like the old Motown music. I know some of the names of today's musicians but I honestly can't tell you any of the songs they sing. Very little of the music interest me.

There are some "modern" musicians that I like, but they are not popular. You will never hear their stuff on the radio. I also have not listened to the radio in years.

I can't tell you how much I hate....as in HATE google. I see them at the core of everything wrong with the world today.....but.......

The music service they have is really good....So I just swallow hard grin and take the lashes that using youtube gives me.

This is what was on last night when I changed the hydro fluid in the small zero turn.

I think it might be nice to have a TV in there at times, wonder at the value of having the video running.

I need to rest A LOT, so there will be times I will be sitting relaxing for 20 minutes to let things calm down a bit before I lean over the mower again, I can do it just takes longer now. Those times sitting I think it would be nice to have video like this running as well.

Mine has been in an unheated garage for probably five years with no ill effects.

Also have one in the shop where the thermostat is set to 42 degrees when I am not there, ie all winter.

Just hung a 50" Samsung (clearance at Sam's Club) on a hinged mount so I can swing it from (what will be) the sitting area over to the working area.
Use it to review YouTube videos when needed or new for background noise when working.

No TV in the garage. I go out there to be able to concentrate on a project or goof off. Lot's of good music to stream.
For me I find that television is self serving to elements of society that produce nothing, so the damn thing would be a horrible distraction to me. Music works when nothing else making noise (assembly times mostly). The other thing is that with only 1000 sq.ft. inside heated area every square inch of wall is needed for shelving or other functional things.

What "TV" does and tells me I have little use for. I see it as a corner stone to a great deal of evil in the world.

@Mike65 said he is not "anti-TV". I am very anti TV. I find it as poison. I can't think of the last "tv show" I watched.
