1 hp is good. It'll make holes.. you can always trade up later.

At least needle the guy.. low ball him. Love to yank the chains of the FIRM crowd.

He says his is "firm". the condition of his pecker is something you do not need to know. At least go for a look-and-see. Use the ol', "Just what I want, but I have another like this to look at." If the seller thinks he has a "fish" on his line, it is not likely he will toss the fish back and wait for a better catch.
The seller's line of , I have other persons looking a it" is BS. Where are they? Why did you give me an address if someone called ahead of me?
I have cash and I will take it right now if we can make a deal, can be a motivator.
Leave your cell number to show you are serious. Don't be surprised is you get a call.

In the current market $200 is not that far off really, although I would wait for something better. Not really worth harassing someone over.

Here's another Sears/Craftsman DP. I think it's older, only 1/2 HP, but wider speed range. This one's listed for a higher price ($280). No vise, and no cranked lift table.

That is pretty much the last us made craftsman dp. I like them but I have not pushed one to it's limits.

I buy and sell many tools. The main reason, I have found, for selling an imported drillpress is it was junk when it was new and it has turned into a real turd.
There are some newer imported Asian drill presses that are built to a much higher standard. You will find them at better tool stores where industrial machinery is sold.
I like drill presses from the 1800s. I have four of them in service. The biggest one is a 22 inch WF and John Barnes and the next smaller is a HOFFER 20 inch.
For me,, the slapping of the flat belts and the feel of the machine is very important. I find it very satisficing to be able to say, "I restored this drillpress, and it works really well."
I built a cabinet for my 12 inch Canedy Otto. I made an "inverted line-shaft" system in the cabinet. This allows for speed changes. A leather flat belt is the final drive.
I like the hunt and find then the restoration. Anyone can put down the plastic and buy a drill press, A restoration or refreshing makes it your own.
Thanks for the information mate:thumbup:

When I sell something, especially a machine tool, I know what price I need to get out of it.

If someone thinks they can get a bargain by waving cash in my face and saying they’ll take it right now, they can leave.

I never NEED to sell anything. If I can’t get my price, I’m happy to keep it. I never say my price is firm, but my prices aren’t really negotiable. If I expect some haggling, I simply increase the price so I get what I want.

Haggling assumes the need to sell. I simply have a want to sell. Either pay asking price or stop wasting my time.

I was about to post something on buying a used drill press and I see this thread.

I see 2 benchtop drill presses near me.

1. JET drill press for $100. 5/8" chuck. Guy didn't list a model #. Looks similar to the 12" swing JET model on Jet's website.

2. Delta drill press for $125. It's an older looking model. Again no model # listed. Asking for model #'s on both presses.

What should I look for when buying a used drill press?

An alternative is to buy the WEN 4212 DP. It's 168 at lowes. Take off $20 off with a coupon. I end up with a brand new, warrantied DP with variable speed adjustment. It's 68 lbs so I can move it around without any help. I called WEN and they said the 4212 will be back in stock on March 20th.

I woulnd't worry too much about hp. The belt or chuck will slip before you overtax a .5hp motor. More is a nice bonus.

No...not in quality or design. Imo there's no need for a crossslide vise on a dp.

Thanks. I'm not impressed by all the rust, either. And the vise hides the table, would need to remove it to see if that's Swiss cheese.

Gotcha, thanks.

Does anyone here know how deep of a hole either of these will make? Can they get through a 4x4 (or more) in one shot?

Yeah, easily through a 4x4. Quill travel will dictate, and then you need a bit that will extend same amount to drill max depth at one shot. After that distance between chuck and table will dictate. Most drilling is with a shorter bit somewhere within the quills travel.

Prices have gone up in Maine mid-coast area recently. Patience will generally be rewarded. I think prices tend to be lower in late September, and in late winter. When people are spending more time in their shops, and thinking about a change. Under $100 still comes up from time to time for a Walker Turner, Craftsman, Delta, or Taiwanese. I have a WT and Craftsman 80, both of which I like for their Karma. I am second own of both, and know of the original purchasers. However, my Taiwanese has a crank up table, runs smoothly, and does as nice a job as the others. Ironically, it just lacks the Karma of the others. I would not hesitate to pick up an older Taiwanese DP in good shape for a good price.

Avoid the Wen. The Delta would be preferable to the Jet.

The Jet looks like as decent machine. $100 seems like a good price.

The Delta is missing the table and table lift mechanism. In it's current condition, it's almost unusable. If it was complete, I'd take it over the Jet.

Thanks. Going to look at the JET tonight. Reading a JET manual to figure out what tools I need to take it apart. I can’t pick it up myself and none of my friends are free to help. [emoji19]

Remove the head and table and you should be able to manage the 3 components. It helps to lean it over on some blocks to make the head easier to slide off the column. I think the head is secured to the column with metric set screws. Good luck.

Thanks. I've been doing some searching, and someone mentioned that the newer Craftsman unit (the one with the lift table and vise) has a quill that's less than 4 inches.

I've bought a few used drill presses on government auction sites. I bought two Powermatic DPs and one Wilton DP.

The problem with these websites is you usually can't test the press before you buy it, but then buying these DPs for under $100 each is not bad.

Well, that's a moot point. I'd emailed the seller last night, never heard back, and the listing was deleted earlier tonight...

I think too as of late, that covid has a lot of guys puttering in the shop, and wanting dp's. And possibly guys not selling because of quarantine. Maybe the gates will open over the next year.

Having said that. I noticed a lack of machine tools before Covid hit.
Good point. Seems like everyone is looking for a hobby.

Picked up the drill press last night. It was in great shape. 15" swing. 3/4 HP. And it cut through square tube like butter. I was reading the manual and it's allegedly 156lbs.

It was a bear to remove the head from the post. I laid it down on some 4x4 blocks and pulled. But the whole machine would drag across the floor. The seller stood on the base while I pulled and we finally got it off.

Thanks for the advise. Pretty happy with this machine.

Nice! Just out of curiosity, why did you have to dismantle it to move it?

My model is 156lbs according to the manual. I weigh 165lbs. And it’s an awkward weight. Top heavy.

Two guys would be ideal if you don’t want to disassemble.

Have bought several machines from govdeals.com just read the terms good some places require an authorized rigging company the remove the machine which can get expensive real quick. Just ask me how I know.

Gotcha. For stuff like that, I'd ratchet strap it to a hand truck, and roll it up onto my trailer. Can also climb/descend stairs with this very basic setup. Having to lift it into a vehicle would certainly not be easy, though.

Agreed Mike. I would have to wrestle it into my jeep wrangler though. Me != [emoji123]

I saw a Craftsman (Atlas era), floor press with the extra pulleys on top on CL today. Was missing the belt cover, and the pictures didn't show the right (handle) side, but it looked pretty complete. The ad said that it ran without issues. The paint looked pretty good, with some patina showing in parts. All unpainted parts were covered in rust. There was something on the table, so no way to know if that was Swiss cheese.

But, it was only $50, and was gone when I just went to look for it to post a link...

Watch Facebook marketplace. It’s gotten a bit ad oriented lately. But easier to post stuff on. So more sellers.
