Springfield checking in. Just bought the one house in my development with a carport instead of a garage, but that's fine because I got it cheap (from family) and I can build it however I want. :p

Anyone else in fairfax county build a new garage recently?

Not recent (1992), but not far from you. Actually I think not having a garage but having the space to make one is better than getting something that is a compromise.

Unsolicited suggestion, build bigger than you THINK you need, put AC plugs everywhere you can, and creatively think about spaces that can serve as storage.

Good luck and don't hesitate to call upon the VA Garage Gang for suggestions and help.

Time to start planning again for the fall. I'll be glad to host again in the October/November timeframe, but it would be nice if we had more than one get-together (GTG) this fall. Anyone else interested in hosting a GTG?

I'd love to but I'm still helping buildmy parents' house and moving them from their old house.

I love the idea of more than one GTG!

I'll be bold enough to throw my name out there to host next year though.

Greetings all!

Checking in from South Riding. I purchased a TH with a two car (19x17) last month, and it has always been my dream to have a beautiful, clean, and organized garage. Hopefully I'll be able to reach that goal some day soon with the knowledge I'll gather from here!

GoodF - Good hearing from you and once again great idea. I might be able to host this fall, I just need to figure out which weekend I won't be going to a track event or a football game. But if someone else wants to host, don't wait on me, we can always have a couple of fall events this year.

Hi,
My wife and I bought our first house a little over a year ago in Alexandria (Fairfax Co.) off Edsall Road, about half way between Rt-395 and VanDorn. It's a two-car garage townhouse with room for a workbench and tool storage off to one side. I'll post pics soon!

I've finally started building my shop and have a ton of questions. Even though I have a lot of experience doing home remodeling I'd love plenty of advice. Here is my first question:

Is there anybody on this forum that is a contractor (or knows of a good one) in the NoVA, DC, MD area? I'm initially interested in the local building codes and it would be great if someone could come over and walk me through a few things like adding a couple of circuits for wall outlets...FREE BEER!

Bob - Welcome to the VA Garage Gang chapter of GJ.

I'm sure if you host a Meet & Greet event some of the guys will swing by and give you their opinion. Don't recall anyone owning up to being in the electrical side of the construction business, but who knows?

Hi NOVAs

I'm halfway between Leesburg and Aldie. 3 acres. Two-car attached.

As soon as the kids are out of college (4yrs), I plan on building a detached
3 or 4 bay. I'm into all sorts of things, so I plan to have a shop that can
handle different things; a bay with a lift, a welding area, an area to work on my pinballs, and a lounge area: couch, tv, fridge, jukebox, etc...

I'm totally out of room in my current garage with tools, and a bunch of lockers they were throwing away at work, plus 3 big desks for workbenches.

Hope to get ideas from here and start planning it out.

Morning gang!!

Just found this forum, so I thought it was polite to say hello :)

Currently, my wife and I own a townhome with a two car garage in the Gainesville area.. I am the bane of my neighbors existence, because I actually USE my garage.. LOL... Garage is wired for 220 and air.. Current vehicle is a Jeep Wrangler sitting on 38" tires(this one doesn't fit in the garage), but I plan here shortly to add some german sheetmetal to the collection...

Hi!!! :D

Nigel,

Live in Gainesville. Moved into my wife's townhouse. ***** that it has a single car garage but I told her the next house has to have at least a 2 car garage attached to the house and then room on land beside or behind the house for a 3 bay detached garage that I can have a lift and loft in...

Like LT. Dan above me I am one of the few people that actually USE my garage for my motorcycle and car, along with my tools, air compressor..etc. I use it and not just have random **** that is in there for another storage room... The garage is on par to me as the same as a home theater room. I love them equally as much , probably the garage more soo...lol

Before and after shots attached.
I will post them in here when I get done. I can't attach photobucket photos at work because the site is blocked.

-Nigel

Welcome all new NOVA members, thanks for introducing yourselves. Sorry for the delayed response, I was prep'ing the last few weeks and then at the track this past weekend, but back online now. Taking a few seconds off my lap time made it all worth it!!

Hopefully we'll be able to pull together a Meet and Greet soon to put faces with names.

Till then, drive safe. R1chy

Hi All!

R1chy invited me over. We share a common interest in the Saturn Sky. I am also a big motorcycle nut, particularly BMW. In the next few weeks, if all goes well, I will be the proud co-owner of this fine place:

Empty now, but I have plans, and would not mind hosting a GTG some time this summer.

Anyhow, glad to meet all of you!

It would be great to have another GTG this summer. I know we have some new guys, and we still haven't seen some of the old ones yet!

Yeah, that area can be hit and miss, though usually they can't aim! :lol_hitti

My new place is on Seminary in Alexandria, not bad, not great. I like to think of it as an "emerging" neighborhood!

Cool deal, I'm up for a GTG in the summer...will give me hope throughout the winter.

My brother lives near Seminary inside of 395. I'll check the pictures when I get home (blocked at work).

Hi,

I just stumbled across this thread running through the two-car garage pictures. By quick introduction, my wife and I live in Vienna, VA and I'm in the process of organizing our 19x19 two-car townhome garage. Needless to say it's a tight but lots of shelves and bins have contained most of the detritus.

Thanks guys. It was one step and found treasure or sweet deal at a time. I am done working on the shop and going hammer and tong at the race car now. This weekend is out for me but I bet we can make some Sat afternoon work for the Nova gang. I'll supply the beer.

Are you building a 911 to race SCCA? I'm new to the site but I raced for over 35 years and now my son has been racing for 15 years. He is building a house with a seperate race garage just off rt.66 and Glebe Road. Should be finished in about 6 to 8 weeks. We will also have a lift but it will take years to make our garage like yours. Right now we are operating out of a garage in Bluemont area of Arlington about 2 miles from the new house. We also have a 28' enclosed trailer, golf cart and a 2004 Ford 250 crew super duty diesel truck. We are racing a Nissan 350Z in the SCCA T3 class and finished 3rd at the Road America runoffs last September. It would be nice to get together some weekend. The prseent garage is heated and last weekend we took out the differential to send back to the manufacturer to have them check it out. The new garage will have a large storage room to store the larger stuff we seem to accumulate.

RacerBob - I believe V-grip is a long standing PCA guy.

This year I'll likely attend a couple of SCCA events in addition to the usual PCA and NASA events (albeit DE) in prep for attending one of SCCA's double schools later this year (discretionary time is in conflict with desire).

When I do I'll give you a shout to get some idea of how they run their events. I suspect not much different from other clubs, but never hurts to understand which priorities they focus on (I once attended an out of region PCA event and during morning tech they wanted all the harnesses clips pinned - I had no idea what they were talking about till someone clued me in and I found some paper clips to get me on the track). For example, I'd like to try and understand SCCA's new "Majors" program, but I suspect that would hijack this thread in a way different direction and probably best had in person over a couple of beers (maybe this spring during a meet and greet).

Anyway, welcome to the NOVA gang.

Good stuff, you are in my neck of the woods. I live in Westover near lostdog pizza and the market that has all the beer :D

How are you able to have a large storage room with the building size limits in Arlington. Mine was build as big as possible and that was 550 sq/ft and I heard the new limit is smaller.
