I received these wartime sockets in the mail this afternoon. The wartime universal sockets have been quite difficult to find so I was glad to add one to the partial set. The 3/8 drive sockets provided some upgrades to that set and I will go through the 1/4” drive sets tomorrow.

I haven’t read thru this thread at all but I’m generally familiar with SK doing contract production. Any info on the chrome vanadium STEEL socket?

^ no and no on either of those two ratchets, Don.

while we're at it, I'm still in need of a 1/4" drive 3/8" socket to replace a broken one in a "Carb-O-Mang" set:

I believe those are among the earliest knurled sockets in the modern style that S-K made. They used that marking briefly before changing to S-K Chrome. I have an early mixed set.321CDECC-16B0-4C85-83B4-BDF0F2EBB6E3.png6DDFE07E-34D0-4C39-876B-C4EB731B1EDA.jpeg

So I see that your example is 1/2" drive...maybe the oversized STEEL marking on my example was just a 1/4" drive thing.

I saw the post about the F40170 and could not resist it, it arrived yesterday. The 1939 catalog also lists a F4070R reversable ratchet, has anybody ever seen one of those?
No, I have not. Not if it’s built like that plug ratchet. I’ve also never seen a 3/8 or 3/4 built like the early reversible ratchet on that next page, only 1/2”.
Edit: the 4070 is the paddle handle reversible rat..

I haven’t seen an S-K marked one. Maybe potential buyers didn’t want to cough up an additional 19 cents for a reversing ratchet. Since the reversing ratchet isn’t shown in the catalog maybe it was the same as this Chrome Alloy one with a very similar part number.

I believe that is what It must of looled like, the 4240 set at bottom of the left side of the 1939 catalog has a ratchet that looks the same as your Chrome Alloy 4070 except the number is 40170, it even says it is resersable.8.jpg

A couple of S-K items arrived in the mail today. S-K Tool Fanatic! sent me a care package that included a short extension and a wartime 3/8” socket1533CD2D-74CB-4707-8988-0EA21C049905.jpeg
i added the short extension to this set and now it’s only missing the crossbar.E158B887-17B2-4D62-9B8F-8B9AF2053FC6.jpeg00C9ABE7-AB0F-4327-991C-E6ADD34FCB51.jpeg
I may have overpaid a little for this wartime 3/4” drive ratchet, but it was the first one I ever saw for sale. It works great and both of the socket retaining balls are in place. It’s a good match to my estate sale extension.

Awesome 3/4 drive ratchet, never seen a 3/4 drive S-K ratchet in person. glad that stuff went to a good home instead of collecting dust over here.
