Black oxide on the Impact tools, I use A really fine wire wheel on a 4" homeowners grinder and a really light "buffing" motion. it "polishes" the rust off and leaves the oxide. I have had good luck with wartime tools as well but do not lean into the wheel!

If you have really deep rust, 0000 Steel wool and oil (I like gun or 3 in 1 oil ) Some rust you are simply not going to get it all (the really deep pitted stuff...)

The 1/2” drive Patent Pending ratchets are pretty rare. The great majority of early 1/2” drive ratchets have the patent number. I’ve only run across two Patent Pending ratchets.

Thanks! That would be great. I grabbed a couple of the newer conventional Pat Pend ones off of eBay this morning. I was surprised to see them listed.

No affiliation to the seller. Bit too far for me to pick up for someone, but saw it and thought of the discussion. He also has some other ratchets and things.

If link disappears, what looks like a 1/2" black oxide Pat Pend for $20.

The two Pat Pend ratchets arrived today and will be added to some early sets. As a bonus this lightly marked postwar S-K spinner was included in an inexpensive partial Walden set that I bought because it included the crossbar.

I picked this up at a garage sale. It was green before being (I think) sandblasted.

The outside. Box is straight and the lid works well

I have quite a few “user” SK tools that I bought in the mid 70’s but I’ve never seen this logo on any of my tools or boxes IIRC.
I’m thinking it was for a 1/4” drive set.
Any guess how old? Just curious, I’m not a collector.

Yeah, Jgaz, that box is older. 1950's at the latest but probably earlier.

Worth some nice paint and put it to work.

I have two or three SK metal boxes from my 70’s set purchases. Are they the color I should attempt to match if I repaint this box?
Does anyone have a spray can color that is a decent match?

As I said before, I’m not a collector

I've used these two paints to "approximate" the green of later SK boxes. They are nice for restores but not exact matches.
Is the color of hammered finish called “Deep Green”?
If so I just located one at an Ace hardware near me.
Thanks for the response

Yeah the color is called deep green, I’ve checked every store near me and no one has it. :(

I believe that they started using that logo on the aluminum tag in 1946 and it continued through the mid ‘50s. That box is appropriate for a couple of different 1/4” drive sets.

Wow! When I saw the box at the sale my first thought was that someone on here would know something about it.
I never expected this though.
Thanks!

I‘ve been taking advantage of some hot weather to refinish some 1/4” drive sets with wrinkle finish overcoated with my favorite Midwest Military green. These boxes badly needed repainting.

I did one more prewar small set yesterday afternoon. I almost waited too long since the hot day started to cool off. What would be the proper finish for that type of box and what type of paint would you use?
I don’t really like to do repaints but sometimes there isn’t any choice. I use VHT black wrinkle finish on hot days. After the wrinkle dries thoroughly, I do a light coat of this Midwest Military paint.

Is there a way to distinguish the very early unbranded SK sockets from the early unbranded Brazil sockets?

I walked into this early peach (late 30s?) recently. Totally original and great shape considering. Lovely label & mostly intact leather handle. Hinges work like new this does NOT have the drop front. Welcome comments as to precise date range and purpose. Tray guide seems too narrow for 3/4 drive.
