I picked up a S-K Wanye 3870 last week. I already had a new 3870 but I liked this one too much to pass up. It's interesting to see the small differences between the two. The Wayne one has much aggressive knurling (which I like better) and is slightly heavier. The newer S-K one has better chrome and is more polished. The Wayne one isn't polished smooth and can see forging marks.

I tried a DT80 I had laying around but I prefer the original mechanism. Unlike the newer S-K with the DT80, the back drag was too high. The DT80 I had laying around was defective but I halfway fixed it. I could maybe try breaking it in, but I don't plan on using this ratchet as much as the other.

Last thing, getting the snap ring compressed is 10x harder on the Wayne than the other.

I've been trying to put together a 3/8" WWII-era socket set. Getting pretty close to a complete 4517. (Special thanks to d42jeep for many of the pieces.) Just missing a 9/16” 12 point socket (there is a 6 point stand-in), 11" un-marked extension (marked diamond placeholder), and tommy bar.

From the 1943 S-K catalog. It shows 10 sockets but only lists 7 in the BOM. Any ideas what the others might be?

Wow, those non chrome plated sockets and unmarked extension look just right. I think the three missing sockets are 8 point sockets that were suspended for the duration. They probably just didn’t take a new picture.

I think those 3/8” drive 8 point sockets are kind of rare. I did a little checking through the limited catalogs available and can’t see where S-K ever resumed production of those after the war. Maybe yours are prewar. Could you take a couple of pictures. I don’t have any among my S-K tools.

Will do they are in my 2 tubs of special sockets. I have quite a few if I remember correctly and would gladly be up for a trade.
Thanks
Roy

Here are some of them. Some chrome alloys, some SK chromes and some close lines.
If you are looking for set I would be willing to trade.
Thanks

The extension isn't old it would be post Dresser which would put it post 85.

Cool thread. My dad has some of these old sets sitting around still that he bought back when he was in the apprenticeship back in, god, must have been mid 70s. My first set I bought was a used 3/8, I still have it around somewhere. Love me some SK. As a matter of fact, I just bought a set of wrenches off a fellow GJ member a few days ago.

Thanks, Guys. Having a summer home allows me to have two collections. I run into quite a bit of S-K and I think the tools are good quality and reasonably priced. The parts house I worked at in Berkeley in the ‘80s and ‘90s was an S-K dealer so I’ve been collecting it for quite a while. I like that it was a popular brand of tools during WW2.

Is it barcalo or barcalo buffalo that you guys like? They are considered a throw away wrench here and there is alot of them. If you want I could emass a mountain of barcalo this year. SK has a crazy following here with agriculture community. As Don said they are a great tool for the price.

Notlob,
That’s great. I found another Stiletto/Bridgeport screwdriver on Friday and added it to your bag(s). Let’s get together soon. I’ve been hitting some sales in your neck of the woods.

Roy,
Take a look at the Barcalo thread sometime. Mr Bill calls me the Barcalo Baron of the Bay Area.:)

Yes, the Bay Area Bishop of Barcalo is the padre of the Barcalo Shrine - one of the lesser known locations on the chain of Spanish missions in Alta California. I also have another theory that Barcalo is still in business but that Don is their sole customer. He has not denied it.

Not sure how vintage it is, but don't see these very often. Maybe made by Klein while S-K was making tools for Klein.

Nice bag! It really does resemble my Klein bag, for sure. R.Olson was kind enough to trade me some S-K tools that were missing from my collection. I think that the 3/8” drive 8 point sockets are prewar and the Chrome Alloy socket was added to my partial set.
