Normally I don’t line vintage toolboxes but I would hate to see the preserved interior of this box damaged so I went ahead and installed liners. It now has the ratchet I found today in it.

Don, I've been using thin cork for liners for yesars, its the "vintage" way to line tool drawers, and works very well.

You can get it at HD, and probably Lowes in rolls pretty cheap.

Good idea. I had a bunch of extra Craftsman liner pieces sitting around from doing my modern toolboxes so I used it up. I have some cork pieces but not enough to line all of those drawers. The cork does look nice. I’ll pick some more up.

Since I was moving tools into my new toolbox, I thought it might be fun to come as close to duplicating the 1956 catalog image of the #4088 master set as possible. The exercise showed me that I’m short on the u-joint socket set and a few other tools.

Thanks! Since I was playing with the S-K tools today, I added my new wartime long breaker bar to the 1/2” drive set. I’m still needing a crossbar and a wartime finish 15/16” socket. I’m sure that one will turn up eventually.

I'm also looking for a couple 1/2" drive war era items. I'll add a 15/16" socket to my watch list. I'm so jealous of your breaker bar. Very nice.

Nicely done Done!

Jeep: pretty sweet looking SK box and even better stuff inside it. WELL DONE!!

Thanks, guys. Twertsy was nice enough to trade me the breaker bar.
Lardy, are you still looking for a wartime 5/8” and 13/16”? I’ll check my spares today and see if I have either of those.

Yes sir. Still looking for the 13/16. Mr. R_Olson was generous enough with his stash to have provided me with the other socket and the elusive (to me) ratchet. Thank you for thinking of me. There certainly are some nice folks using this site.

I did a quick check of my extras but I don’t have a 13/16”. Sorry.

Picked up this empty S-K 1/2 drive metal socket set box. Looked through this thread but didn't see one like it, but didn't look at all 1,000+ posts.

Anyone have a pic of what one looks full as sold? Might be fun to find the contents for it, box is in great shape.

Sometimes a google search turns up an image or two. Maybe not all that vintage with the knurled extension.

Found this little "foot locker" 2-drawer SK box on Craigslist. Had to soften the guy up a little on price, but I think its a winner, pending a minor clean-up. Any idea on approximate date of this one? Two pages of googling didn't reveal as much......

I’m very jealous of that box! I’m always looking for a wartime S-K box. My best guess on your box is ‘44 or ‘45. In ‘43 the drawers have different pulls on the two drawer but the pulls on the three drawer match yours. On the early postwar boxes the drawer pulls match yours but they have the riveted on S-K logo. It looks to be in very good condition too. If you could find a carry tray that would be the icing on the cake.

Thanks for the input, Don! First, are you saying there is a carry tray that should fit into the largest portion of the top tray? Secondly, you don't have to be jealous, you can own it. I think the shipping would be prohibitive though....Oops, I see the tray now in the Ad you attached. Thanks again!!

Thanks! just what I was looking for. I'm pretty good at Googling but didn't find that. My go-to research is first here on GJ, then eBay search, then Google image search, then Alloy-Artifacts then more general googling. But didn't find that image!

The paper label on the box has a copyright "Printed in USA, 1987". So only sort of vintage but a nice steel box.

Thanks for the offer but shipping would be a killer. I’ll eventually run across one in the wild. I now have three of the postwar versions.

Well, conversely, what about the tray? is that an original finish WWII tray? Maybe I should be courting you..... :)

Thanks, Dan. I would like to find one of those boxes too! Are you still at the same South Bay address? I might have a ratchet for you.

Here's a 3/4" drive set I've had probably 30+ years, got it used. The box could use a re-finish, tools are fine. I don't use it much, but when I have to unleash this Big-Bertha set, it does the job.

Is anyone aware of a guide for dating SK tools?

I am most interested in sockets, but also wrenches as well.

I know SK Wayne was a particular era but is there anyway to date other SK tools?

ALL: since some of you have shipped toolboxes anybody want to share the best (not always the cheapest) way to ship one either a roller or a nice top box?

I had someone ship me a top box Fedex once. Luckily I was home when he delivered and he just set it where I wanted it.

Price wise, it wasn't too bad either. I would look into it.

Gotta crate the rollers and ship preferably to a business location via whatever trucking company. I have had the chest shipped to me via fedex.

OTG: care to share what about the cost was to ship a bottom roller toolbox?

I've heard there are a few truckers and companies that will haul stuff for reasonable if they are headed that way for a pick up and their trucks are empty, but i don't know who.

BMW: even with my business Fed Ex account it is about $70 to ship a 12x12x12 and 50-60 pound box so guessing a bottom roller might be close to $200 or do you recall what your shipping cost was and was it an EBAY special shipping deal or just a person to person?

thanks guys!!

OTG: that was my guess. I think that is about what Fastenal would charge if i shipped to California and to Florida or east coast I bet it would be $300-400. was yours coming from east coast or ?

thanks

ALL: to keep the conversation on SK too I started a thread a few weeks ago about all the companies that SK made tools for and it filled up pretty quickly. there was one issue on CHROME ALLOY or something like that and where to place that in my INDEX. anymore companies that SK made tools for or maybe who made tools for them please post on this thread or the one I started a few weeks ago and here's the link:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=433244

it took me a while to find the link so I gave the thread a bump while I was there.

any new information?

Drives, I seem to remember it being a bit less that that, maybe $120. But, due to this the box was relatively cheap. And yes, it was an eBay thing.

Roy took pity on me for missing two sets in my new toolbox pictures and traded me these beautiful sets. Thanks, Roy!

Here are some of the S-K tools I found at two different sales in Concord, CA today. Some are marked and some aren’t. The Ell handle that came with the deep socket sets was kind of a rare find and one that I was missing for my prewar deep set.
