Well, this is kinda awkward. I just hauled out my 1/4" user box, and went to use my SK 1/4" flex handle (40953), and noticed the yoke on the flex thingy is bent slightly on one leg, ~1/16". Came on here to ask if there were any concerns about putting it in the arbor press to close the yoke back down, decided to search to see if anyone is talking about them being weak, or breaking one doing that...

Allfast, I don't think this one currently passes as nice shape, maybe after I bend it back.

Geez, talk about timing.
I wouldn’t hesitate to press it back into shape. My question is who would have used a cheater bar on a defenseless 1/4” breaker? The little breaker that Allfast is looking for wouldn’t have any markings but would look like the marked postwar breakers.

I added the missing crossbar and removed the placeholder extension which completed this postwar set yesterday. I admit to adding a 25/32” as an extra because it filled out the set in the box.

After finding mostly wartime 1/4” drive sets in the boxes with water transfers, I received this prewar or early war (late ‘41 or ‘42) set yesterday missing three pieces. Almost all of the tools had owner’s marks but they were pretty unobtrusive. I filled in the sockets with spares and borrowed a crossbar from my Brazil set. I need to find a couple more early crossbars.

Here are my old S-K 1/2" sockets and ratchet. My Dad bought these in the early '60s, I think. They've been used quite often and well over the decades, ratchet never needing rebuild/repair, and you can see that he was a fan of using cheater bars on it, as the handle is well worn with such marks. Most of my needs are metric, so the sockets haven't been used as much but the ratchet and extension are primary in my rotation. Also have some of his 3/8" Snap-On and Craftsman from the same era, as well as combo and ring wrenches.

We found a few S-K tools at a tool sale on Saturday. I decided to replace the missing hex insert so I cut an Allen wrench down to fit.

Since Kdaniel generously provided scans of his catalog 649, I thought it might be fun to do a layout that matched the 4010R set that is shown in that catalog. It was a little more difficult than I expected due to S-K using an earlier box in the illustration. Their artwork department must have had a very small budget. My solution was to show the contents of each drawer individually.

Got these at an estate sale.

No idea about age or desirability. I just think they’re neat. I’ll clean them up a little this weekend.

So this past weekend, I popped this apart and cleaned up the innards.

I need some help from the SK experts.

The detent ball in the square drive is no longer spring loaded. It just rolls around inside there. I don’t see how to open it and add a new spring.

Any tips, or is there a replacement part for the square drive?

Any help is appreciated.

Impressive collection Don.
It looks great all laid out as in the catalogue, it must have taken some time and effort to achieve that, thanks for sharing it.
The SK tools look really nice, but I've never found any this side of the 'pond'.

I’m a little surprised that you haven’t found any in the U.K. During WW2 they were used in some Military sets as you can see in the upper right of this picture. The picture is from 11/42.

That does make it surprising! It was the legends of wonderful WW2 American tool kits that got me interested in fine tools when i was a child, and later on first led me to GJ. But, to my knowledge I have never yet seen any SK. Must be looking in the wrong places! Now I know what to look for maybe something will turn up.

It’s odd how the actual boxes don’t match the catalogs. Check out the drawer pulls shown in the ‘43 catalog. I’ve never seen those.

Looking good, SK. I have a similar box from the diamond era, so the insides look a little different and it isn't in nearly as good of condition. If I run into anything I think you could use, I will send it along though!

When I did my set display recently, I had to substitute a wartime wrench for the postwar 5/8” x 11/16” shorty. I picked up this one to complete the set.

Does anyone recognize this rack as being S-K?

It came from an estate sale years ago. There must have been sockets on it when found, possibly in a tool chest, don’t remember. It’s been in a drawer holding impacts for years. Unfortunately there isn’t much crinkle green paint left.

Ran across it looking for unrelated rare sockets that I can’t believe I may have abandoned, since they aren’t where I thought they were when moved. Yes, I just might deserve a good swift kick in the pants!

Anyhoo, no markings on it. The color is, or was, I should say, a good match to old S-K green.

Not sure if this is still available in the Punta Gorda, FL area, but seemed like a good deal. Showed up on a FB vintage tool page, and I thought the poster was going to go for it, and the seller indicated to me that he wouldn't ship, so maybe somebody in SW Florida would find this worthwhile?

Neat set with the branding. It’s a fair price for the full setup.
Thanks for the heads up. I didn’t quite leap out of my chair but you got me thinking about it. :rocker::bounce:

I would be all over that if it was near me. I liked seeing the ratchet without two bands of knurling. I really just need the box.

When I saw this early ‘50s 1/2” drive set on eBay I noticed how complete it appeared including the crossbar. I figured the rusty areas would clean up. It seemed a nice counterpart to the wartime set I got recently. When it arrived today the only tool missing was the 1” socket. I pulled one out of another box for the later photos.

Very nice Don. That’s some green goodness as we say.

How about some throwback to black?

No one twisted my arm, but thanks to OOB, I’m the new keeper of this 1/2” Brazil set. I’ll get some decent photos in the day time.

Smoke- Outofbounds deserves the suckage on this one, it was his lead.

There is one small surprise yet!

That is a truly unusual set. I’m glad it was a GJ member that ended up with it. Congratulations.
