Vise Info Thread

I posted this in the main vise thread as well. I want your thoughts and opinions on this.

I’ve seen This in quite a few mid 40’s and 50’s reeds.

At first, I thought they were random stamps. Now, after seeing more than a dozen, and the dates lining up with when reed made changes to the spindles and whatnot, I’m 75% convinced these are date codes.

Everyone I’ve seen has been on both the static and dynamic jaw, on the left side as you are looking at the handle in front of you straight on. This is my first craftsman.

What do y’all think about this? I have 3-4 more at home I can snap pics of also. The 214R is the only one that didn’t have the stamps on the same sides.

Beaver, you might be on to something there. I have a 1/2 dozen or more Reeds and will look and see if any of mine has stamps. Thanks for sharing.

Advertised as "New" - 1896. The illustrator may have been adverse to drawing vertically

Thanks akasrick , Prentiss used this same model number's on these earlier under the bench swiveler's and did not change the model number's with the later models swivel releasing on the side's. I'll have to think of a way to list them both.

Hey KMScott...That's a Smith pattern that Oswego Tool made for many years. In fact, before E.W. Fulton came to town with all of his vises, Oswego Tool was making combo vises for many manufacturers, including: Parker, Walworth and Armstrong.

Check out the scans of the older and newer version of the Smith Pattern that Oswego manufactured.

Hope things work out for you and your parents. I can really empathize with what you must be going through. I've been through the same thing.

Fierl, really good stuff. The Ontario Pattern is a new one for me, note how they used the C style jaws over the 70 degree jaws that Parker is so famous for. I wonder if Oswego had their hand in the larger Camel back combination vises for Parker and made the same jaws as Parker's. I have built a couple Parker jaws for the camel back vises and noted a difference in the shape and construction methods especially in the back angle.

Thanks for the note on my Parents. Yes it is my turn and yesterday was a big day in the Scott household. They are now both together in Assisted living. I can not get back to a normal schedule.

Prentiss # 34 and #39. 2" Solid Jaw Jewelers Vises that both open to 2". #34 is a stationary Base and # 39 has a swivel base. Model numbers are not marked on these vises.

York 125. 125 mm Jaws (4.920) that opens to 4-1/2" and weights 38lbs. One of my restorations.

Wilton HD 4". 4" jaws that opens to 5" and weights 40lbs. This one was restored by me and a custom set of jaws was built. The 4 x 3/4 jaws that was original was welded on.

Wilton #3. 3" jaws that opens to 7" and weights 20lbs with a date stamp of 12/46. Came with acorn nuts and when I restored this vise I built smaller swivel clamps that fit.
