It looks like Swayne Robinson & Co. used two different vise styles for the metl-former vise. The main difference I can tell from the photos was did it have a horn (1961) or a hole (1955) on the back of the fixed jaw (main base). Attached are photos of my later one. It is complete except for the 2nd handle. I'll have to get around to making one of those.

Swayne Robinson & Co was an iron and aluminum casting factory founded in 1842 and operated until 1997, when it closed and its owners filed for bankruptcy. Until it closed, it was the oldest family-owned business in America. Being a foundry, I suspect they made their own vise instead of buying one and modifying it..

Specs:
3.5" wide jaws
3.25" max opening (fully supported)
Weight: 17 lbs (bare vise)

KM- hmm, you and your buddy get to live in Estes Park, and find cool tools there as well? I’m envious! Can’t believe your welder buddy found that metl shaper. De he purchase loose or attached to a vise?

He got the whole package in the original box. Estes Park has plenty of retiree's and his vise collection in the thirty years he has been collection is just amazing. I bet he has 60+ vises and most are keepers. I need to go up there and take pic's. He has a vise tree with clamp-ons at least 6-8" high with at least 30 vises not included in his vise collection I mentioned earlier. He is the person that started me in this business.

Hoping I'm in the right section to post help to ID this little Made in USA vise I picked up today at a flea market. Believe the colour to be original could use a little maintenance but functions fine. Any clues would be appreciated. Doesn't seem to be a Makers mark on it only seemingly part markings V10, V11, V12 etc. Again appreciate any assistance you might render.USA Vise 1.jpg

Hi Joyce
I am not familier with your new vise but there is many vise experts in the main vise thread that I bet could help you. I have seen many vises but not familier with yours. Click this link and post your question there.

Looking at a Morgan 150 (5" jaw, circa 72 lbs) for sale. Very clean, very good jaws... BUT : slide jaw was welded onto slide (both sides, right where the slide meets the jaw); vise obviously broke at one point. Current owner bought it that way without noticing the weld. Weld fillets are big, but of course I have no idea of the quality/ potential longevity of it. Can get pics tomorrow. Pointed out the weld, he's asking $50. I would likely clean it up/paint it and resell, always pointing out the weld to potential buyers.

Worth the time to mess with?

A welded vise on the dynamic slide area is it's death sentence. Sounds like a parts vise to me. Maybe the spindle and nut is worth $$'s to someone and if it has a swivel base then maybe you could sell that too. Post pic:s here on the main vise thread. I added a link below.

WQ59B, I'd say the parts are worth $50.00.---I gave $40.00 plus shipping for a base to a #145 Star a year ago and was tickled to get it.---Plus I had to buy the lock-down mechanism separately and was happy to get all of them because Milwaukee Tool & Equipment Co. ( http://www.milwtool.com/v_swiv2.htm), wanted $250.00 for the same.---And then there is the main screw and handle.---There are some very good donor parts there.

Can someone recommend a good DIY-level vise? Are Yost or Wilton Taiwanese any good? I'm not sure a $500 - $700 professional machinist vise is justified for my needs; DIY automotive and home repair. But I would like to spend my $$ wisely and get something decent. I would like 4" wide jaws or thereabouts, and preferable at least 5" opening.

You can not go wrong with a Reed, A-Scale, Hollands, Morgans, Rock Islands and Chas Parker vises all 4" jaw widths as long as they are not damaged, welded and the jaws are pretty decent. The fun is finding the one that pleases your eyes and wallet without buying new.

I got a whole bunch of Record vise that needs cosmetic restorations.
What paint should I use that’s close to the original color?
Thanks!
