I recently acquired this vise that was manufactured by the Murray brothers of the Trenton Vise & Tool Works. It's instantly become one of my favorite vises.

jaw width.........3"
jaw opening....3"
weight..............27 lbs.

trenton-a03.jpg trenton-a01.jpg trenton-a02.jpg trenton-a04.jpg trenton-a13.jpg

It's an 1867 US Patent no. 66,965 vise by A. Jameson.

1867_07-23_US-66,965_a.jameson1...trenton.jpg 1867_07-23_US-66,965_a.jameson2...trenton.jpg

From what I can gather from the patents fancy words is that the swivel base was the most important part of the patent. It consisted of -2- bolts with shoes that were tightened and loosened with a wrench.

1873_hart_bliven_mead_mfg_pg.272.jpg

In 1876, The Trenton Vise & Tool Works introduced an improved swivel base, which consisted of an under bench wing nut setup. They claimed it was an improvement because a wrench wasn't needed. Personally, I think that they went backwards on that design change.

1876_the_metal_worker_v.5_n.23_jun03_pg.02.jpg

So with that knowledge at hand, I'm claiming the circa for this vise to be (1867-1876). It amazes me how old this vise is and that it's still a one-finger operation. I found an old photo from that era of downtown Trenton NJ, and it really is telling of the times.

Athol 023. 3" jaws.
I went looking for a brochure page in the vise spreadsheet and did find it there. Brochure shown is from 1960 (according to my info) but no date is indicated for it. 023 is 3" jaws, 3" opening, 14 lbs, pipe jaws for 1/8 to 1" diameter pipe. The 1964 catalog does not have the circular marking on it as yours does.

OIL WELL SUPPLY VISES
These are from their catalogs. The 1884 catalog only shows two sizes but by 1892 a larger No.3 was added.

RARE PRENTISS
Prentiss "Yankee" Quick Action Lever Vise

The vise is from a 1902 patent by Eli Zimmerman which was assigned to Prentiss. There were ads for it in the 1906 issues of American Carpenter and Builder magazine but not in any future issues. The magazine continued to have ads for another Prentiss vise, the Blake Quick Acting Vise (which is also fairly rare), but nothing else about the Yankee. There is a photo of a Prentiss Yankee from an unknown-to-me source. The blurry photo seems to show at least three models. Does anyone else have information?

Rock Island #97. This one I restored. It had cast in jaws that was not very parallel so I replaced them with Tool Steel ones.
6" jaws that opens to 11" and weights 140lbs. Ended up in a weld shop in Denver. Happy to see it back in service.
You wouldn’t happen to remember the acme thread size would, I have a 97 with broken screw looking to replace it if I can, before I go making a new one

huckaberry: Many vise companies made vise/anvil combinations and it's hard to tell them apart. Here is a picture from a 1920 Rock Island catalog that looks like the one you posted. They used the same drawing for their 1934 catalog. The 1912 C.E. Shields patent was assigned to Rock Island. By the way, if you buy it, or one like it, don't use it as an anvil. They are usually hollow and cast iron is brittle.

LATE EDIT: It could also be an Austin but the hub on yours isn't the same as RI or Austin. See what I mean about "hard to tell apart"?

No sorry cfox but figuring out your threads is not hard. Acme threads have a angle on the sides of the thread, Square threads have straight sides. Measure the maximum diameter for thread size then use a scale to count how many threads there are in a inch. I like to have the scale in the center of acme or square threads for counting. example- 3/4 - 4-1/2 Acme.

Hi all.
I have a Wilton Scout 14 that I am trying to remove the lead screw for refinishing. There appear to be two pins holding the lead screw in, and the pins appear to be peened into place.
Any advice on a good way to remove these?
Thanks!
Pete

Pete, I’ve never taken a Scout apart but if that pin is riding inside a groove then yes it’s gotta come out. Carbide burr is my removal choice if doing by hand. In my shop it would be done in my Bridgeport.

ppressel: This is from a 1950 Wilton catalog. Apparently, Scouts were introduced that year. Look at the bottom of the page. A replacement screw assembly came with two pins. The pins were meant to be consumables. You'll just have to dig them out any way you can. Good luck.

Very impressive research! Thank you thank you.
Pete

Update: the pins are out. pretty close to 1/4", very soft steel, basically a cylinder with a rather loose fit in the bore.
Thanks for the help.

I think this thread is the appropriate place to put this.
Hopefully someone has a better example for posting on the spread sheet.

Bonney #3

iron 2" jaws
opens safely 2"
as it sits broken, 2 lb. 6 ozs.

Lose or break the swivel jaw no problem, break the swivel so the vise fits a larger piece.
What I find interesting, the screw and collar is I think one piece and the rear jaw front jaw is broached to accept the screw.
Beats the Baker patent by a few years. I'm using the 1886 pdf.
I was looking to find some of the word "Bonney" on the anvil and I was surprised to find the #3. The phone is a better magnifier then my handheld.

akasrick: Thanks for posting that and drawing attention to the swivel jaw attachment. I've seen that style of Bonney and never noticed that it might have had a swivel jaw. Here is a Bonney catalog page from 1914 showing four models with that feature. I'd like to find a No.9 with swivel jaw and swivel base.
