Not on this forum ! :lol_hitti

I still miss driving 4" off the ground, with my legs straight out. Every other vehicle I've driven since has been like sitting on a bar stool.

If you're looking for something to sleeve those wires you might want to check with Techflex. I use some of their PET sleeving for projects and they really make top notch stuff. Check their website, they make stuff that really runs the gambit from heavy machinery all the way to the space station and shuttles and everything in between. If you're not sure what you need call or drop them an email, they're very helpful. They are also quick to mail a catalog and any samples you may be interested in. Great people, great products and great service.

For the record, I'm not affiliated with them but have used them a lot over the years. ;)

Can anyone identify what the coating is on the chuck:

DSC02379_zps10909aac.jpg

I would like to disassemble it, clean it, and relube everything, but I am a little worried of stripping this finish off of the chuck. Shouldn't the chuck be clean silver metal? How can I get it back to that???

That's just an effect you can get with age. It's a culmination of many things coating the surface over time. Generally a non metallic pan scourer and paraffin, (kerosene), scrub will shift it.

Pay some attention if you disassemble. The jaws are normally numbered/indexed and need to go back in the same slots and same order.

Paraffin? How does that work? I was thinking some sort of degreaser would work, no? Brake cleaner? Acetone? :wtf:

Yup.
Otherwise known as: patina.

AKA... rust and finger grease.

Okay, so soak in something to remove, and scrub if necessary?

I may have to re-publish my "flammable fluids translator" for the various continents and countries at this rate...

Welp...you could try chemicals...
Vinegar, molases , evaporust...whatever floats your boat. But in the end your gonna hit it with a wire wheel of some type to shine it up. Mabey even buff...
I've seen some real OCD restorations...
Not that, that is a bad thing. but how far ya wanna go?
So - no, he isn't telling you to wax anything named "Chuck". :lol_hitti

lol thanks.
I spit beer all over my keyboard and my pig is licking it up from the floor.

OK a "simple" thing like camp stove fuel:

Naphtha

Coleman Fuel

Camp Fuel* Ozark Trails, Pensol…

White Gas (US)

Blazo

Ronsonol (lighters)

Lighter Fluid (lighters)

Lighter Fluid (Charcoal lighting fluids, some are kerosene or a mix)- ALIPHATIC HYDROCARBON MIXTURE kerosene and Naphtha?)

Gulf Lite and Wizard Charcoal Lighter Fluid

Fuelite (Formerly Shellite)

Callite (NZ)

Mobilite

Panel Wipe (UK)

white spirit AKA Cleaning Fluid, "Turpentine Substitute" (Paint Thinner) White gas (NZ) THE most misleading name in use for any fuel/solvent, as many are different petroleum products…

Energine (Cleaning Fluid, Carpets and the like)

And others:

Kerosene, AK Paraffin in the UK

Jet Fuel - Often claimed to be Kerosene, but is not quite -
Jet A - Kerosene type
Jet B - Naphtha type

This weekend has been very productive already. The wife and I located and stocked our new raised garden bed that I built last weekend, I cleaned up all the parts for the drill press, ordered the rest of the necessary parts, and began painting.

For this restoration job, I specifically bought a HF purple HVLP gun to spray the parts. This is my first attempt at spraying paint, so be easy on me with criticism......there are plenty of people who create masterpieces with much more pricey guns :)bowdown:), I am not one of those people.

I have been contemplating the best way of setting up a 'paint booth' for this. Should I clean up the garage and put up some plastic? Should I do it outside with just a backdrop of plastic? Should I take it to a friends shop?
Then it dawned on me.........I have a shed that contains things that don't really matter if they get paint on them . So "paint booth":

The first thing I did was shoot some rustoleum primer on the bottom of the base:

20140412_103833_zpsbtmftzwp.jpg

Next, I shot was a second coat of primer on all the parts after sanding down some of the runs that came from the rough brushing my father in law and I put on in the middle of winter to stop the rust.

I think that I thinned the paint a little too much for the primer coat, either that or I paid it on too thick, or a little of both. Either way, not too bad, a little sanding and no more runs.
After drying for 3-4 hours, I thought it was pretty good (our temps were up in the low 80s today), so I went ahead with the first coat of final finish. This was a custom mix from Sherwin Williams (primer is SW too).

I mixed the top coat a little thicker than the primer which really seemed to help with runs, but I also went much lighter on the spray. I mistakenly sprayed a little too high on the psi, but it didn't seem to hurt the process at all.

All in all, I am fairly pleased with my first attempt. :rocker:
I will try to get picture out in the sunlight tomorrow, the flash and the shed are not helping the color very much.......

I also had a friend at work help me out with some polishing......

I want to polish all of the handles and knobs for the press, so I gave it a try on one piece to see how it would look. Here is a comparison of the before and after....

I think it looks AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! Huge improvement over just painted handles.

What do you think?

I also ordered bearings this week from Accurate Bearing. Good recommendation! Tony was very easy to work with and they had what I needed! I was hoping to get them this weekend, but alas ups disappoints again. Oh well, should have everything ready to put the motor back together Tuesday evening!

I just checked on the parts, they look amazing! There are a few spots that I missed during the first coat, but that's what a second coat is for, right? Anyways, I'm just an amateur....

I am going to go shoot the 2nd coat right now, should I do 3 coats or just 2? I am not planning on clear coating at all, so this is it......2 or 3?

I think the green turned out really good. I'm not really sure why, but I have always thought that machine tools should be blue, gray, or green......Maybe something from HS shop class or a machine shop I saw at some young, impressionable age.......

I think they look fantastic , may I ask what did you use and in what order to get this result ?

I asked a guy at work for help with these. I think he used an eastwood buffing wheel and emory and then rouge(? white) polishing compound. I will ask him tomorrow.

I think I am going to ask him to do the other parts for me, as I do not have a capable buffer motor......:dunno:

Well thanks now my Walker is feeling inadequate....

Really nice work. I like the aviator too. I did a frame off on white '78. It is gone now, but will always have a special place in my heart.

For the column, I started with a 100 grit bristle disk, then hand sanded with 200 paper, and then buffed with one of these in my drill:

images

I used brownish/reddish buffing compound which was the coarsest the store had.

All that, plus a ton of elbow grease, got from this:

To This:

Your DP is looking great, need to do something with mine now.

Can you tell me or post a pic of the " 100 grit bristle disc" I don't know what you mean, but it sure seemed to work good.
Thanks
