Hello, I'm new to Garage Journal, but was a HAMB member a few years back. (My project car has taken a back-seat due to economy).

But I thought I would post a couple of videos I produced on some of my vintage machinery, specifically, a 1946 9" Type A South Bend lathe, and a 1950's Atlas (metal) Shaper. I grew up with the lathe, and inherited from my Dad....wasn't about to let it get away from me. It has been taken apart and re-assembled a couple of times by myself. I also restored the Atlas Shaper, though its more of an interesting piece than a much used machine....but yeah, it works.

Anyway, I hope you like my videos, both are in high-definition.

The lathe:

The Shaper:

PS: I let a small Rockwell vertical mill get away from me; wish I had it now!

Patrick,

Welcome to GJ!

Nice machines! I have always wanted a shaper, but never got one, and now I have no room. :(

You did a nice restoral on it for sure as demonstrated by the video.

You guys are lucky! I wouldn't mind a smaller Clausing.. or a Nardini... maybe 12x30... no.. 16x40!

It'll take a while, I know. Time to start saving!

Good find ! You wont regret it at all. The ROC Lathes I have seen ( Enco's and such ) do excellant work. I got my ROC made 13x40 ( cant even remember the name of it, there's a pic of it in this thread ) at an Auction for about 940 $ w/ tax and auction fee's.

It works great

Friend has a 13x40 Enco, he is real happy with it.

I haven't seen more then one post including an atlas/craftsman 618... I got one at an auction a few years back for 80 bucks. Included a set of change gears and a pair of jacobs comutator chucks in the box... I've been searching like a ******* to find some affordable chucks for it. 1-10 spindle size is not very common.

My guess is that it's from the 40's sometime. I have a collection of old motors and starters that I was going to practice with. Mainly I was going to use this for making spacers, fasteners, little sleeves, things like that.

I have that same lathe. I wish it was a little bigger. But it does well.

hell of a price you got it for. Will be a good machine for your intended purposes.
Does little machine shop have that size chuck, of maybe a faceplate for a plain back one?

South Bend with a Minimax7 mill. A ton of cutting tools and stuff I have no clue as to what they are used for. Thanks to many on this thread, I now have direction to find the answers to what all this stuff may be used for. Has a number a different sized chucks both 3 and 4 jaw and the x-y table for the mill which attaches to the rails of the lathe...I think.

Anyway, lathe belonged to one of my neighbor's husband, and after he died, she wanted to clean out the garage/shop space. The kids did not want the lathe and tools so they were mine for a couple of bucks and some tractor work on their property.

Ody.

I have a HF 44142. I was able to purchase it with a 20% of coupon. For what I paid for the machine, using it in a hobby setting it has served me well. I have learned allot and am reaching a point where I have the confidence/knowledge/need for separates and since I have had some time making chips I feel more confident buying used American iron. To each their own, but this machine has served my needs well and will continue so during my search for separates.

I made some bronze adapters to mate 1" to 3/4" hose on a boat today on my Southbend 9A.

I tell you. It is so great being able to make stuff that pops into your head....

I just finished up hooking up a JET 13x40 lathe. Sort of a new learning experience. I've ran lathes for 30+ years, but figuring this out is taking a little bit of time. It took a few hours to get the feeds, speeds figured out. It has a 4 way tool holder on it. I hate it. And I never did like shimming tool bits, so I am going to have to order an Aloris tool post for it. In about a week, I have in ironed out to where I feel comfortable with it as far as tooling and as far as setting the feeds and speeds.

Two things.

1. I have all the metal lathe videos you could ever want including the above mentioned ones from southbend which are not only helpful, but just cool. For a small fee contact me and I can send you them.
2. I have rivett 608 from craigslist and a stark # 4.

Possibly the nicest lathe I have ever seen is owned by a buddy of mine Dan W. Very good guy who just happens to have one heck of an old machine collection.

Hope he doesn't mind me posting his machine, but it is just too nice not to.

Got this 40's vintage Atlas 10F a few months back:

P1010310.jpg

After a tune up & a re-wire everything works nicely. There is a little wear in the bed, probably not enough to be a problem for the stuff I'll be doing though. If it bugs me too much getting the flat bed ground will be simple.

P1010421.jpg

It looks like a total antique but has proven to be damn useful & actually little different in function than a basic lathe of the same size that you would buy new today.

Cheers
Clint

not sure who that was directed at... But mine were destined for the scrap yard and I have yet to get them working.

The real perty one was obviously a complete restore. After doing that kind of work one usually takes a second admire it and grab a photo for posterity.

I am waiting for a deal to fall into my lap, do not have one or a mill either. I have friends and neighbors for the rare occasion I cant work my way around a problem. Buying parts has got more practical, efficient and cheaper, fast shipping etc these days. I haven't wanted to collect another whole layer of tooling, if I seriously started down that road would like another shop addition for it and a couple more tuck parking bays while I was at it. I am at the right edge of having the ideal shop setup for what I do more would mean more clutter and I can just plain get by without it. It isn't that I couldn't find some use but that I just don't need.

Love the homemade cabinet underneath the chip pan.
