my wife is a gem. keeps the house clean, does the cooking, laundry, has a full time job and leaves the garage all to me (no storage of junk). does she help me out tho? umm.... kinda.

she wants advance notice if i'm going to need help. when i call her out to the garage for help, i better be ready. she doesnt have much patience to stand there, watch and wait for me to need help. i really try to make sure i can't do said task by myself. i guess no woman is perfect, but she's close.

ben

All this, me too.

since i am the woman of the house, i don't have a wife to help out, but my bf rarely would even though he was a trained mechanic. today, tho, a great friend came over and we swapped the alternator in his truck and pulled the engine/trans/xfer from a lexus lx450 and it's sitting on a cart in my garage.

Although my wife has assisted in the brake bleeding stuff, other than that she despises the garage, she gives me endless **** for the time I spend out there and it has never occurred to her that we wouldn't have as much as we do unless I do so much stuff myself. Thanks a lot for starting this thread, I was just going through one of those periods where I wasn't as touchy as usual about the lack of support I get from the family unit around here. Now you got me all pissed off again. The one exception is my middle kid. She is pretty good with tools and helps when asked.

Treasure that kid and the time you get with her, trust me on this one.

Wife always asks if I need any help as I leave the house. Being bull headed....I seldom take her up on it. If you ask my wife and kids....the overwhelming response would be that I dont ask for help often enough. That said, if I do ask for help.....she is right there by my side. I consider mtself a lucky guy.

My wife is learning as we go. She and I have an arrangement that I maintain the outside, garage, and cars... She will handle the cleaning and laundry. :bounce:

Yesterday she came outside and helped me sweep up and clean up when I finished my overhead storage.

Back before the baby, she would hang out with me while I worked, and lend a hand now and then. Now we are both so busy, garage time is a bit scarcer. She'll still help when I NEED an extra set of hands, though.

Fourteen years ago when my son was in high school we restored a VW bus in the garage. It took about a year to complete and my wife never came out in the garage once to even see what we were doing or if we were still alive. Does that tell you anything.............

Yes, actually. She doesn’t lift heavy things, but often the only thing that’s required is an extra pair of eyes. She helped me guide the motor and sight in the mounts for me when installing the last motor I installed. Sometimes I just ask her to sit and talk to me while I’m working on things, even if only for a few minutes. Just want her to not feel completely ignored when I’m working on a project. One thing that helps is that she works during the day on Saturdays, so I usually have one day a week to work on my projects.

My wife helps sometimes, when asked. My problem is that her dad taught her some stuff in the garage but just enough to make her dangerous. She also inherited his taste for cheap tools, so I have to argue with her over every tool I buy. But she likes it when I fix stuff though.:lol_hitti She does do all the house stuff though. Oh and she makes more money than I do. (I love my sugar mama)

I have no complaints - my wife does laundry and dusting. We share on cooking. I vacuum. She gets the house, I get the garage and basement.

She helps every now and then if I'm in a bind with something. Other than that, she's not really into the "car thing".

See - thats where the wife doesn't want to help, well.. not with the mechanical portion of it... But she DOES bring me cold drinks and sandwiches while I am working on the car(s)! :D

My wife helps out all the time.... Most recently, when I installed the VCT tile in my garage, she saw me spreading the adhesive w/notched trowel and said "I can do that!" and she took over putting down the adhesive, she had a much better technique than me, and went faster.

mine will help out anytime...and if I am too slow she will pull the gearbox or motor, swap out the clutch, put it back together and then ***** about how slow I was while doing her nails after its finished.

When we built the garage I found out she is not good at swinging a hammer so I let her run the framing nailer. During construction she hated running the skill saw so I did most of the cutting. Mechanically both my wife and my daughter are good gearheads and will happily tear into the motor and it even runs when they put it back together. And my wife is a way better welder than I am.

I had to say I got a chuckle out of this. I saw this thread and the "Show Us Your Snow Removal Equipment" thread on the same page - while looking out the window, watching my lovely bride shovel snow!

Thought about taking a picture, but figured it might not be the best idea...

Oh, yeah, my wife will help out any time I ask. She's at least willing to try. She really likes to split and stack firewood.

Don't quit your day job, you **** as a fortune teller. It's a little irresponsible to predict something as drastic as a divorce based on one post about one subject. I would hazard a guess that I've been married longer than you've been alive. After all these years, a guy gets to know what's important to get worked up about and what's not. It also helps to have a finely tuned "endless ****" deflector handy.

My wife will paint a room or detail a car (clay, polish, wax) pretty readily. Come to think of it, she likes running the snow blower, too.

The UPS man once asked me "what's she doing by the car?" Me:"Swapping brake pads." UPS: "I wouldn't trust my wife with that" Me: "Well, it's her car."

So I can't complain.

My wife usually helps when I ask. She helped me build our RV. Right now I won't let her unless it's light duty. Somehow she went out and got herself pregnant, so I won't let her do any of the "heavy" stuff she usually does.

That HAS to be the worst way I've ever heard it put....:wtf::bounce:

She will always say yes, but then it will take her an hour to get to the garage. I think she's hoping I finish before she gets there.

Maybe, but you do have to allow for things like her finishing the million and one little jobs that woman do every day so our lives are better.
I've bitched in the past when she took twenty minutes before coming out, but my wife figured out that the best thing to do was drop everything and help, then when I have no clean socks, no lunch, clutter in the middle of the table, etc. etc. etc. because she didn't 'take a minute' for that, I kind of got over it.
Now I give her plenty of notice.

Wow, I'd say after reaing this thread that 80% of wives are helpful out in the garage or some people are lying. :bounce::spit::)

I don't see this in my urban neighborhood. Maybe that's one of the differences. I mean we cram our lives onto a 5000+ sq. ft. lot with a detached garage with office and bath and a 1300 sq. ft. old Spanish style house built in 1930 that's 90% original.

In fact, my situation is quite like Jack Olsen's, I just don't have quite the garage!

My wife is a tiny little gal, pretty as all get out and has her own tool belt. She has no problem coming out and giving me a hand when ever I need her.

My wife too, except the tool belt.. She's only about 120 lbs..Of course that would get me fired up if she walked out of the bathroom wearing only a tool belt and a smile...

My wife loves to help. We replaced the timing belt on her car, she was helping/holding/fetching/tightening, whatever needed. She did the trans filter/fluid change herself, (I instructed, she did) ****** fluid in her hair and all. She will hold, drive a nail, cut a board, tell me off, whatever. All 5'6", 110lbs of her.
Love that gal.....

absolutely she will help. she's helped me do body work on my truck before, and also changed the brake pads on her car. I just talked her through the process. She's a great woman...I love women who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty.

I started this thread, and no idea it would get this kind of response..........lol. I asked my wife to sit down and read all of this. She did and then said "well if those girls can do it, so can I". I told her I wasnt trying to get her to do anything she didnt want to, but she said "you buy me a tool belt and some mechanics gloves and I will do anything I can". So I tell her that Im going to get the belt and gloves today, and thats ALL she can wear when she is out there.........lol. Now Im really looking forward to start my RockSolid floor in the next week or two.........She will look damn good in that Belt!!!!!!

OH MY GOD I HOPE SHE DOES NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love my wife, we have been married 28 years but I know her short comings. 2 years ago I decided to put t1-11 siding on the shop to cover over the old masonite siding that was on it. The t1-11 stained in honey pine with dark green trim looks great but when I installed the first piece she tried to help.....disaster.

I am on the ladder holding the 4x8 piece up against the top edge and her responsibility is to line up the bottom and left side with the existing trim. I carefully showed her that I needed it to be flush to the edge. So there I am on the ladder with a nail gun read to go.

me: Is it flush with the left trim?
her: yes, sure, go ahead
me: are you sure it is flush?
her: yes it is flush
So I start nailing all the way across the top and work my way down. As I get about half way down I can now see the bottom edge clearly. There is a 1 inch gap at the left edge.

Me: I thought you said it was flush
her: it is flush, look
me: there is a gap about an inch!!!!!!
her: so what that is flush! It is only an inch!
me; yes dear. Thanks for your help, I could not have done it without you. I can handle the rest by myself now. Thanks honey.

Note to self: It is really your fault, you should have known better. Never have her help with anything ever again. She is a wonderful wife in every other way but this is just not her thing.

She will if I ask. She even helped build the garage until I got to the second floor part where she backed off because of her fear of heights. She used to change her own oil & rotate ties on her 5.0 Mustang GT, but she doesn't have time & just stops at a local shop.

This kinda reminded me of what I used to say: If you think you have a great relationship with your wife, try hanging cheap wallpaper together.
If you've ever done it, you know exactly what I mean.
