wrench--We are all drooling over your new planer. It looks terrific. I like the copy "it can be instantly arrested while the machine is in motion...". I guess it is an early version of the Sawstop. I have many questions about condition, such as rust and broken parts. Wonder about the babbit bearing. We really need pictures. Good luck with your new tool.

5 tools in the illustration. I love simplicity and I bet you all those tools were in the crate when it arrived. I hope you get them all and make a way to store/display them near or on the planer. Magnet hooks are a fetish of mine for such things.

not exactly woodworking but it's the clock I made my dad for Father's Day. Stepdad helped me make it. What I did was glue the sawblades together first. After that you mix the epoxy and pour it on and put the numbers on starting with 12 6 3 9 then you put the others in between. Be very careful when putting epoxy over the numbers or they might slide and then you have to grind them off and redo which you can see I had to. Then we leave it in a tent outside for 24 hours for epoxy to cure. And then because sawblades have larger than 5/16 hole we drill after but when doing wood you drill the hole for the movement to go through before then clean out epoxy after. Then we just put the movement on and put the hands onto it. Make wood clocks same way expect the part about drilling. Next one I make I'll take pictures through the process.

teen--Nice project. Time flies.

It ran at the sale and i engaged feed rollers but i didn't feed any wood through it. Its sat 5 years and i want to pull the b-caps, ck, clean and lube cutter head and feed roller bearings. Initial check at sale and home this am was very good, tight bearings, bushings and all. Cutter head has 8" total babbit surface to run in. It has a 5hp, 220v, 1ph ge motor conversion done very well. It has a 3 cutter head and i got 2 sets extra cutters. This may be updated too, i don't know how many c-head was orig. I has 2 minor not critical cast repairs.

the cutter head runs constant, the feed rollers engage with a handle on the right and can be easy disengaged. if worse happens i'd still have 2b conscience 2 stop feed!

With the passing of my second daughter back in October I've been wanting to build a high end shadow box for her urn. Going to a wood store for exotic wood, and maybe get ideas for wood I want to use. I don't want some plain shadow box for my Skylar she is a princess who deserves the best. My mind artistically is fried so I asking for drawing ideas for me to build it for her. I may incorporate LED lights into it. Please if you can draw something up I will choose one and build for my Skylar. Also suggestions on wood would be nice. I was thinking African Purple Heart, or Zebra wood etc. I have pictures of her urn with measurements and where her urn is resting at the moment. Looked all of the internet for ideas but they all looked plain and one in a million. Skylar meant the world to us and want her urn to displayed for us to always see. Sorry to bug any of you.

mikes--So sorry to hear about Skylar. Prayers are with you and your wife as you work through your grief. How about a cross motif with the box somewhere on it?

I lost two infant grandsons in 2015. It was not a good year. Shortly after each one passed, I planted a tree in his honor. Matthew's live oak is much taller than me now and I can see Hunter's willow out of my kitchen window.

Your shadow box project might be difficult but I think it is a positive step. Woodworking can be healing. Good luck, and don't forget to post some progress shots.

Agree on the LED lighting. Will cheapen it. Now some indirect lighting from the ceiling to highlight it would be nice.

I have built some ash holders for my dogs, I really like to use Birds Eye Maple. The birds eyes always remind me of tear drop stains.

ALL: I stopped at a store in a little town in my area and saw a few items similar to what some of you make and thought some might be on the list TO MAKE so here's a few pictures. this little store owner has 200 woodworkers art or work sitting in her shop to sell and some is pretty amazing, but not anything that some of you couldn't make i'm certain.

All: i didn't take pics of everything cause i was busy following my bride around to the other stores, but she didn't mind when i took a couple detours and picked up a huge vise and a metal cabinet that i found a few miles away.

QUESTION: when you are drying good old wood do you paint or put chemicals on the ends to keep it from cracking? what and how often do you do this?

** the piece of a tree/log sitting in the town's main street is over 8 foot tall and it's similar to ones my gramps used to haul before WWII.

when i stick my slabs i paint the ends to help control end cracking. use anything that will seal the end grain.

Jimreed- thanks. mother in law took them tonight. father in law liked them. i need to actually build something out of wood soon. im at a stand still on the workbench right now as Im waiting for the screw to still be made. talked with the father in law the other day and it seemed like he could get to it soon. I just bought some powertec castors, like the rockler ones, that can lift the workbench off the ground to be moved.

i think the next project will be some sort of sanding station for the wall. i keep all my sanding stuff and sander in l boxxes and its a pain to have to keep getting them out all the time.

Drives--Thanks for those pictures. I am sure we are now loaded with project ideas for some time.

Growing trees are made of cells that are full of water. The percentage of water weight varies but it is around 90%. I am sure the volume measure is higher because water is heavier than most species of wood. So when that water evaporates from a non living tree, the wood will change shape. More dense areas do not move as much as less dense areas. This irregularity causes separation, cracking and deformation.

The solution is to divide the wood into smaller and more uniform pieces. We call that making lumber. These pieces are usually small enough to maintain their integrity as they dry by shrinking together. I have heard of a heat treatment with PEG where the wood is immersed into the PEG solution. The PEG displaces and replaces water. Its density prevents collapse of the cells and the wood stays intact.

Started and finished a Sargent 5307 low angle? Block plane today. Started in pretty decent shape. Apparently when you sharpen with 2500 grit you get a mirror shine. Whoduthunk. Time to sharpen the other blades to match now. Lol

Hey guys,

I'm making a "sparky tote" for myself, see pics:

In these pictures it's not actually complete or assembled yet, just fitted together. Would you glue the bottom panel into the dado, or just glue the side corners and let the bottom float in its groove?
