EZ--Thanks for weighing in. I am kinda leaning that way.

Bob--I never considered such a drastic upgrade on an antique but my daughter is less of a purist than I am. Good drawer slides would save the day here and might be just what they want. I will have to ask them how they feel and what they really want to get out of this thing.

Thanks.

Got the bridle joints all "pillowed" and got the first glued up and in clamps. A before and after on the pillow effect. So smooth and soft. I love it. b6cab57d18c7880367025de4312a567f.jpge5f439207f02ec110bd86722102d251e.jpga12a364fcaa5504bbe4672792e033686.jpgfa01f0a2d40661008de8e9f0cfe25533.jpg6b361e7925d5270ae6f145142f4939c5.jpg

I got the second joint glued and in clamps. To pass the time I got the dovetails cut on the birthday box. First time ever doing dovetails. They are at an angle to give a barrel effect. I tried to follow the line with the saw since I didn't have a guide. Came out pretty well for a first ever attempt. Not perfect but they should work. e6e125f2cf140dbcfc11821f7ee1fea9.jpgbf9699d82a1f4d209d488b8881a30243.jpg5a54a8ef2b36602a7e1bf1c9882d8f2b.jpgc628427893b17950a9678c43bc10fffc.jpg

RR: when we started this thread the guys were talking about dovetails or maybe joints in general need to have a little extra space for expansion and contraction from hot/cold and or the moisture in the wood. looks like you've got a great project started and always like what you are doing and thanks for posting up pictures.

Jim: best of luck with the desk

Bob: interesting way to put on some slides.

ALL: i'm all done staining and putting some copper green on the base and top of my cedar mailbox stand and ready to bolt it to the simpson 6x6 supports and bolt it together.

just curious if any of you have a good method for drilling bolt holes for the support brackets other than just drilling holes from both sides like i did for my pergola 6x6's?

i tried to see if YouTube had any videos and not much other than buying some guides for my drills. i might just drill a small 1/8 inch hole from the top hole through the 8x8 and see if i can hit the top hole on the bracket on the other side?

thoughts?

Jim and drive: Thanks. It's a pleasure to share the progress.

I got the last two joints glued and in clamps. Been in a few hours already and could probably be taken out. While I waited I got the sub frame pieces milled up. Try still need to be cut to length and width. The sub frame pieces attach vertically to the top rails and essentially make the walls of the lower playing surface.

Again so happy to have the bench done. I would not have had a good place to clamp these pieces for glue up if I didn't have it.

In case anyone is wondering the Stanley Baily chisels have the same manufacturer markings as the dewalt chisels. e4cea1745c3b1ffcfdf21cb01b067cad.jpg

rrich--I have seen mixed reviews of the Stanley Bailey chisels. But they look pretty nice. What do you think of them?
So far so good with them. The dewalts seemed to have another bevel on them. The Stanley's didn't. The handles are big but not heavy. They were pretty sharp out of the box. I had shop your way points from Sears and got them at a decent price. If I only needed one set I would probably get the dewalts as they are cheaper but the Stanley's have an extra larger sized chisel so it's a trade off.

ALL: i started to bolt my "little" cedar mailbox stand together and i was thinking 5/4 x 6 cedar for the base under the mailbox, but these 2x8's mill dimensional cedar look a bit nicer so 2x8's it is.

far from perfect, but a bit of an improvement to the mailbox stand i built over 20 years ago to keep the kids (or drunks) from knocking down the old 4x4 post with 4 boxes on top a few times.

stay tuned cause it might get done before the rains come again.

Rich, that almost look my woodshop, with a project that requires two benches or the floor in my case.

I finally got the trims cut out for the picture frame and will be gluing it together hopefully this weekend and prepare it for a light sanding and then clear coat. Thinking of several coats of Tung oil. I'll see if I can get this one corner looking better, but the other three corner looks perfect, yet this one corner is off and it's bugging me. Wife says I'm too **** about it but I wish it just lined up better.

Madison: it would bug me too and I'd fix it.

Little progress between last night and today. Got the two short sub rails glued on. Like I stated earlier these form the walls of the playing surface below the table top. I will glue one of the lower g rails on tonight after work. 07a6dc2a9814aa4e507dc2bd4a8e0a82.jpg

Not exactly fine woodworking though I did use a hand saw and chisel to cut the notches for the piece that goes across. Random afternoon project with the little brother. Drives--Looking good. Kinda makes my blow plastic mailbox look like--a plastic water bottle.

Mad--if the corner is off that much, then something is wrong. Check length of pieces for uniformity. It looks like one is off.

rrich--I like seeing the floor in your shop. Not much of mine visible these days.

Teen--I love your posts of projects with your little brother. Those family bonds go deep. I am sure when you reach GeezerLand like me, you will cherish those memories. The weathered wood looks nice.

Thanks. The long boards are from the bench I redid due to grandpa painting two boards white and short ones I don't know I just found them. He had fun helping. In sad to say there's only 2-5 weeks left that you guys will see projects by us because my background check finished much earlier than expected so instead of boot camp date of July 24 its whenever there's an opening so in few weeks. Got at least two more woodworking projects with him, handle for my knife I ground from a file and a box for his turning chisels and then we are fabricating a bumper for my truck. Hopefully in a couple years he discovers this forum. I enjoy reading through everyone's projects here.

Good luck and safe travels seeing the world with the Navy. Check in when you can. We'd all love to hear from you. Just don't post any pictures of classified nuc stuff. They frown on that.

Madison069, I assumed you were pulling our legs when you posted that picture frame corner. Those are two very different mouldings you are trying to match up. That's gonna take some fancy knife work to blend them together.

Teenager, best of luck with the Navy. You are one of the few who are offered that training program so a big congratulations to you. As I understand it you complete the program with the equivalent of a Master's Degree in Nuclear Technology. You can expect high-paying job offers when you decide to leave/retire.

teen--What a great opportunity! I guess we will have to start calling you "Sir Teen" now. Study hard. Good luck.

As for ww, I rehandled a hammer today. It started as a Chicago adjustable hammer head. I cleaned it up and coated it with BLO to keep the rust off. Decided not to paint it because I did not want stray paint on my projects. My hand strength is not the best and it is hard to use these heavy hammers without an errant blow here and there.

DSCN4023.jpg

I found the perfect match at HD. It was a tad long.

DSCN4024.jpg

I cleaned off the stickers and used GOO Gone on the residue. Then I removed the hanging staple from the end. There was overspill drip finish on the business end.

DSCN4027.jpg

DSCN4028.jpg

It is a well made hickory handle but the finishing was so bad I sawed off the tip and used a sharp knife to scrape the sides where the head will go. Luckily the finish did not penetrate far into the hickory and it came off easily.
]
DSCN4029.jpg

DSCN4030.jpg

Then I used a handsaw to saw the finish out of the wedge kerf. This is why you need to mount your vise proud of the bench.

DSCN4031.jpg

The first trial fitting showed it was shy.

DSCN4037.jpg

But there was a good mark on the handle.

DSCN4038.jpg

I used a drawknife to prepare the surface.

DSCN4042.jpg

DSCN4043.jpg

With wedge in place, I tried again. The easiest way to do this is how my dad showed me to rehandle an axe. Just tap on a solid surface and let the head seat itself.

DSCN4049.jpg

Four or five blows on the concrete floor sent it home. How do you know when you are done? Well, each blow is like hitting something with a deadblow hammer. Once the head is seated, the tool rebounds like it has a spring on the end. So keep up with the blows until you get a bounce. And then give the wedge a tap. It helps if you have a hammer with a nice wooden end.

DSCN4050.jpg

I used the handsaw to cut it to length.

DSCN4052.jpg

I chamfered the end with the spindle sander.

DSCN4053.jpg

And cut the wedge down.

DSCN4054.jpg

Next step is to make some hickory faces for it.

DSCN4055.jpg

So that is how I spent my Saturday morning.

Tool kit--a few items

Tapered sliding dovetail joint
I showed this before, but here it is again. I made this holder for my drawknife to protect the edge and to protect my fingers. It is an open box that is held together with a dovetail wedge.

DSCN4039.jpg

DSCN4040.jpg

DSCN4041.jpg

I saw this tapered dovetail joint used on an antique wardrobe and fell in love with it. It is pretty simple to make and really holds well. No cut fingers for me.

Saw till
Here is my saw till. It is a simple frame with a small plywood runner inside. It was simple to make but holds many saws and takes up very little space.

DSCN4035.jpg

DSCN4036.jpg

I have enjoyed this till. It protects the saws AND my fingers. The sharp teeth are on the inside. And it keeps many saws ready for use.

Jim: thanks for showing the tool storage ideas. just curious do you really use that many saws or do you just pick them up and it's easier to store them there than on a hook? bet your bottom dollar some of those saws could be sharp cause i made a nice groove in my finger moving a few of mine out of a drawer a few weeks ago.

nice work on showing us a handle installation cause we all find these old headless tools and new handles that we'd like to put together.

Teen: congrats on getting accepted into the Navy and sounds like a great program. might also be a great way to see parts of the world that most of us will never see. Stay smart and safe and keep logging on GJ as you have time. also maybe have your 10 or 11 year old brother sign up for GJ with a new handle so he can still learn and see how things are done here while you are gone. GOOD LUCK!!

ALL: it tried to rain last night so i brought the last 3 pieces of 2 by's inside my garage to dry after staining them once i saw the clouds move in. we always say around here if you don't like the weather just wait 5 minutes and a lot of times it does change just that quick (good and bad). i hope the little rain we got didn't wash off some of the stain touch up i did on the mailbox stand cause i'm getting close.

my BIL and son helped me level the posts and crossbeam while i drilled 4 holes and put in some screws and i probably could have done it myself, but a lot easier with more hands and eyes on deck.

here's the latest pics.

anybody mount a big security mailbox that wants to say how they did it before i youtube or just figure it out on my own?

Thanks everyone. I've got between two and four weeks unsure of when I ship to boot camp yet. Looking like the week of November 5th but can be sooner. Its like a degree ill get but I won't have the art history and other stuff like that. 8 weeks at boot camp then ill be home for a week then off to south Carolina for school two years of it. Ill log in as I have time. I love this forum its like one big family here. Everyone here is so great. I think I will show him this forum later. He has had fun helping me clean up the few planes I have and in December he's goin to swap meet with Step dad and wants to find one.
I love that mailbox stand and saw rack. My saws are mostly hanging randomly across the wall. Should start getting the thin coat of paint on the coffee table later doin a flag on it for mom. But have to finish my jimmy first put a new catalytic converter in it since it failed smog and have front driveshaft to replace. So tonight ill get pics of the beginning of the coat of paint on the wood. Should also be starting a box for brothers turning chisels will be out of old cheap cupboard doors thin plywood likely.

Teen: good luck and thank you for your upcoming service.

Last of the sub rails is glued up. Will need to clean up the glue joints and do finish sanding on the top. The legs will need to be notched out in order to fit the sub rail. I will do this on Monday. Once that is done I can cut the plywood for the game base, finish sand everything, and glue the base together. Then all that is left is making the plywood top inserts and finish! Getting closer. I might actually make my own deadline of end of October.

Also got my first issue of mortise and tenon magazine today. Great packaging for the magazine. b1b2e6bbb45f4ade22dcf8c98b4631d7.jpgac07b4f8f907a99fc23b6d0d63589485.jpg

I like that saw till.

Thanks for your kind words. In case someone wants to make something similar, here are some more pictures.

It is made out of 1x furring strips on the front with a 2x4 rear. The saw hook is plywood with kerfs.

DSCN4069.jpg

DSCN4068.jpg

The saw hook is set at about a 45 degree angle and the saws naturally dangle straight down.

DSCN4070.jpg

It looks a little rough because it turned out to be a prototype that worked. Once I filled it up and it did not fall off the bench, I just left it alone and moved on.

New plane

I was drinking coffee this morning and got a call from my neighbor, Leo. It seems that our mailman, Mr Sharpie had left Leo one of my packages by mistake. This is what was inside.

DSCN4056.jpg

It is a 19th century side bead plane made by CROW of Canterbury. The size is 3/8.

DSCN4057.jpg

DSCN4058.jpg

Since the blade was pretty sharp, I decided to try it out. Note my new (to me) plane adjuster.

DSCN4059.jpg

Here is the test piece. It came out better than the picture.

DSCN4062.jpg

I noticed that the shavings were a bit tortured.

DSCN4061.jpg

So I got out my protractor to check the bedding. What a surprise!

DSCN4060.jpg

The iron is bedded at 55 degrees, or middle pitch. Most plane irons are bedded at 45 degrees. Some are higher. A 50 degree bedding is referred to as "York" pitch, and a 55 degree bedding is referred to as "middle" pitch. Higher pitch usually means less tearout. That sharp pitch means that this plane was made for use on hardwoods, or in other words, it was made for a cabinetmaker.

So this turned out to be a good find. There are many side bead planes out there but many of them were used by house carpenters. A high pitch side bead is not so common. I got it as a companion to my CROW H&R set. Now I just need to find some more.

Jim: nice to see an old guy get excited about an old wood plane cause i bet you own about 100 of them.

RR: nice work on the project and love all those clamping that must take some patience and skills to get them all in place. also i agree that magazine packaging is almost too cool to damage to get to the magazine.

ALL: I put my cedar mailbox together with some big galvanized bolts and these Fastenmaster screws that use a special 8 sided "SPIDER BIT". I picked up a box of these bits in an auction purchase a while back and i used 6 inch ones to put the 4x4's and 2x8's across the top on and I bought some 4.5 inch ones to get the bit (cause HD didn't just have a bit available the day i stopped there to buy one) and used the 4.5 inch ones to put the 2x8's on that sit under the mailboxes.

anybody use these and any comments?

i removed the dirt in front of the mailbox that would soon be mud and put some gravel in there. other than some big bolts and washers to install on the upper cross beam to give it a little pop (bling) and putting the mailboxes on i'm almost done with this project.

Drives, the mailbox is looking good! I've used bolts similar to what you described. Not sure if they were the same brand or not, but similar idea although mine had almost a deck screw type coating. They seem to be holding up well to the elements on our garden's arbour. They were used to secure the uprights together and hang the 4' wide x 6' tall gates.

Looking forward to see your project wrapped up with mailboxes on it.

Drives--Well I do get a little worked up because every new plane has a story. I am afraid to do a headcount but I passed 100 sometime in the 1990s. Your mailbox project is epic and sure adds some of that Pacific NW charm to your neighborhood. Good work.

Repair

Progress on the desk is slow but at least proceeding. One of the leg blocks had a crack.

It was a clean break, so I covered both pieces with glue and let it sit for a few minutes to soak in.

Here is clamp #1.

And here is clamp #2.

Done.

I also cleaned glue from a few of the glue blocks. Maybe the big glue up can happen this week.

Modified the router table fence today. The original hole was too big. I needed a way to close it off so the wood wouldn't shift on me. Made a simple slide fence with some extra star knobs. Turned out pretty well. Still need to add a t track for a stop block. I didn't have a long enough piece so that will have to wait. I'll just use double sided tape for now. 0cbf6df75ff059c72223f8755da94969.jpg75713519ead4339d5e88980f14462c7f.jpgadf8774dbbe9e460bc8f57ee45f64641.jpg2c22deca8377b61ef8ac1e1fd3910210.jpg

ALL: my cedar mailbox is done and ready to install the mailboxes tomorrow if it doesn't rain on me. i added some BLING with these short 4 inch lag bolts and cast iron galvanized washers.

i even CLOCKED MY HEX BOLTS.

thanks for all the KUDOS and maybe if i have to build another one i'll have all my tools and i'll do a couple things different, but i'm happy with it and my wife is already smiling and showing pictures of it to her friends.

BTW one of the crows decided it needed to be christened before i got the mailboxes on. anybody else not like crows as much as I do and not just for this?

cheers

Drive: I'm jealous. I have my mailbox plus 2 others on my property. I have been wanting to make a single mailbox holder for a while now. Yours turned out great.

Decided I want to try building some canoe paddles. I had the ash left over from a table I built and the cedar was all the clear sections I could get out of the off cuts from the trellis.

Getting some work done on the table today. Tyson came over yesterday and we got the legs notched out for the sub rails to go into. They some how came out long even though I measured. Actually worked out on my favor because with the original plans the notches on the table bottom would match up with the sub rails meaning they would have to be pretty darn exact. I extended the notch in the leg so the plywood would slide into the notch. This gave me a lot more leeway when cutting the plywood by the legs.

Had to sand the sub rails and only good way to do it was clamp it to the workbench. c05d4f62911b205a24ae672b08201042.jpg1aacf42973154d3c950d1e2643d022d8.jpgc8ef2a157737b4ebb48cae55f06534a2.jpgc93732f7f718b590e662573b679c4655.jpg

Looking at picking this up for younger brother. Has anyone ever seen this done before it looks like a homemade extension on it. 57e914d06cb7efa72cfd4d0a69c18b5f.jpge07a9ab448c464f0ff7e4fd0fa230117.jpg
