I have been doing just a little bit of organizing... so much left to do.

I have to move things from the garage to the workshop and from the workshop to the garage... that is what I get for not being better organized when I moved things from Orlando...

Anyway, kept the promise to my wife. First time in 30 years that she can park her car in the garage.

IMG_6454.jpeg

I still have to redo all this side... some of the stuff needs to be out in the trash... some I just need to find a place for it, some I need to give away... But I know I can clear an additional 6'.

IMG_6449.jpeg

Had to move this router table with the Walker-Turner drill press, here temporarily until I move other stuff around...

IMG_6455.jpeg

Also, the toolbox that was in the PODS that got damaged, I gave it a go at fixing it... Drilled and installed 3/16” rivets. Wished it was stainless steel rivets but all I had were aluminum.

And cleared some of the mess... great to see more of the garage floor

Well... got a few quotes on running power to the shop... was not prepared for the sticker shock...

US$20,000.00 !!!

This is 150' run... most of it through the attic of the house from the front to the back, then a ditch with 2" conduit for about 40-50' to the workshop.

4 circuits for outside lights, 1 - 120/15amp circuit to the inside lights, 5 - 240/30amp circuits, 8 - 120/20amp circuits

It is too early to drink and I am still working... so, just need another shot of espresso...

20K !! Damn!!

How many amps for the supply to the shop? I just got quotes to run 150ft of trench, upgrade the supply to the house to 400 amps (new meter base), add a second 200 amp panel to the house and a 100 amp panel in the shop and it was less than $6000.

Your quotes seem crazy out of line. Nothings cheap anymore. I would expect pricing in Nashville (where I'm at) to be higher than your location.

I realize that nothing is cheap anymore ... but I was expecting something around 10K... This is installing a 100/125 amp panel in the shop and those circuits mentioned...

Getting a few more quotes before deciding...

Rent a trencher lay the conduit yourself. Pull the wire all the way to the shop and just pay an electrician hook it up.
I was looking forward to not doing anything myself... if the other quotes come in the same ballpark, then yes, I will be digging that trench myself... It is sand after all. I have done it before, just with a shovel, when I ran water and electrical to the shed.

I have another company coming on Monday and one more on Tuesday, to get quotes.

I get it! If it was digging in sand up here my shop would have water and sewer ran to it. Its all rock out here on ol Rocky Top. My electrician cut my quote in half because I helped him pull the wire from the house panel into my new panel. Hopefully your next quotes will be reasonable and you can get it knocked out quickly.

Thank you all for the comments/suggestions.

I also need to start looking for a company to do/pour the driveway from the front the gate to the garage... Not sure I want a solid concrete slab. Thinking of something like this:

Driveway idea.jpeg

Pretty sure a regular slab will be less expensive... so not too held up on this if the price difference is significant. A lot more work doing it like in the photo.

Yikes, sounds like a “I don’t want this job, but if you’re willing to pay extra” price.

Like that style driveway but not the cost or joy of edging it.
Yeah... One of the contractors for the driveway is stopping by today to quote the job. Will go with normal driveway... I agree, just forming for that style, is going to be a bear of a job... Never mind ongoing maintenance when doing the lawn...

Waiting on the other companies for quotes on the electrical. One today, the other one stops by tomorrow.

I can breathe again... another quote (all certified/licensed companies) came at 1/2 of the first quote... goodness... now we are talking. Just waiting for the 3rd quote so I can decide and get this done! Most of the companies can start right away and just takes a couple of days to get it done...

Driveway, just waiting on the quotes to get that done as well. All pretty busy, so this will have to be done in November.

I wouldnt be against hiring the low bid. But I would want a written scope of work to be performed. Things I am learning as I grow up.

OTOH my electrician cut my quote in half for helping pull wire to the shop. And he taught me about proper terminations in the panel so not only did I get a discount I got a lesson for half price!

The lowest bid was the most professional... a company that has been here in Ocala for around 40 years. I received a written quote detailing the work and circuits and an electrical diagram/sketch of where things will be installed.

I was happy with all three companies that came to quote the work. Just not with the price difference of the first one (20K) versus the last two (10.9K and 8.5K)

Forgot to update the thread... they are done with running wires. Initial inspection went well. Now they need me to close the walls so they can finish installing outlets, switches, lights, etc. I need to first close the walls or it will not pass final inspection.

Went to Lowe's and got some 3/4" plywood to do the job. Started with 22 sheets... let's see how far I get with this...

Plywood.jpeg

My wife had to help me as there was not way for me to do this alone... Lost most of the morning at Lowe's waiting for them to load the plywood to my trailer... oh well, at least we did one wall and the side of one of the garage door's wall...

IMG_8391.jpeg

IMG_8395.jpeg

I stopped when I started making measurements mistakes... I was tired...

26-1/2” not 25-1/2”!!! Argghhhh!! Good thing I need small sections for the top of the garage doors area... Time to stop…

Just curious...was plywood interior your choice or code requirement?
My choice. Why do you ask? Was there something better? I just went with this for the price. Not sure what I will end hanging from the walls and wanted something a little bit stronger than OSB boards. This was 9.00 more per sheet than OSB.

So I have 3/4 treated plywood on the first 4 feet and then non-pressure treated pine plywood on the top 8'.

Just curious. Given your wind requirements there wasn't sure if it might have been required for additional strength.

I completely agree with it over OSB, I had OSB in my place (2) garages ago and hated it, even after 4 or 5 heavy coats of white paint. Current garage has drywall with OSB under the common wall with the house, just unsure personally if my next one will have plywood just like yours or if I will top it with drywall. The fire resistance benefit of 5/8" drywall may win out there, but I hopefully have a long time until that decision comes up.

Yesterday we used up all the panels we had... I am short by 5 panels (4-1/2 panels to be exact)... But everything that is required to be covered for the electrical work, is done.

Yes, it is a complete mess right now... but the people working on the electrical have the space needed to walk around and be able to finish... I will get the rest of the panels to finish this over the week.

Message left with the company doing the work so they can give me a date when they are coming back to wrap this up. Looking forward to having power in the shop to continue the work.

EDIT: Got a quick reply from the contractor. They will be here Nov 22 to finish the work. Final inspection will be schedule for that day as well.

The exterior is sheathed for our winds. When using Romex it has to be covered if below a certain height. (8’ I believe) so that why he needed some type of wall covering.

A few more photos... they are done for today. They are supposed to pour the concrete Wednesday.

I will take some time tomorrow and burry a 2" schedule 40 PVC pipe across. Just in case I need to run something from side to the other. Now would be the time to set that in there...

Just noticed your thread this evening. I can’t even start to comment on what you have acheived in 5 short years. Found many interesting aspects in your build and projects/tool arsenal. One that caught my eye was your stove for future powder coating projects. I shall return. 👍

They get here at 4am to start pouring concrete… I took the opportunity today to insert two pipes - one 2” and one 1”. The 1” is to run internet to the shop. The 2” is for whatever might be needed in the future…

IMG_8765.jpeg

This is the 1” for the internet

And this is a 2” I case I ever need to run something under the driveway.
