Re: Yea Old Garage

I'll agree with that sub. Wood heat seems warmer than oil heat. But we know heat is heat. I guess that wood heats hotter so the closer you are, the hotter it is.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Dlc,
Thanks for the heat search!

Drives
Have around 6-8"
Of the white stuff
From the big storm went through on Monday-Tuesday!
The working heated atv grips was super nice to have!
Temp was mid 20 for the day got garage up to 45-50 which is pretty good considering there is only 1/3 of the ceiling insulated! The rest is just the boards for the attic floor which helps a little to keep the heat in the garage!

Sublime, I just read through the entire thread and am impressed with the progress. I can appreciate the shoestring budget and have to say the work you have done really makes the garage! I went to college at UW-platteville and loved the southwestern part of the state. Keep up the great progress and I hope you have the stove going this week!

That stove is going to come in real handy for the earlier part of this coming week with the subzero temperatures rolling in.

The work done inside,

Some more insulation prepping done,

Just wasn't super productive in the garage today but did get the start of 2 more runs done!

But was nice to have lights and heat!

Progress dosnt look like much, but had to work on some other things around the house as well!

Re: Yea Old Garage

How much snow did you end up with? We're just receiving rain/sleet mix, pretty much all day. I was really hoping for a decent snow accumulation, considering they originally suggested 6"to 8".

Re: Yea Old Garage

I'd say 6-8 of heavy wet stuff,

was in the 8-12 range on the weather forecast.

Started at 9ish and I plowed snow at 1pm with my atv and it was a workout on the atv
And didn't get enough after 1pm for me to plow again!

Glad I added rear weight on the atv gave me some more pushing power!

It packed real good made some great snowman with the kids this afternoon!

Outside temp in singal digits for most of today. Got wood stove going and got inside temp up to mid 40s or so able to work pretty comfortable.
Go stand next to wood stove if cold for a few minutes and your warmed right back up!

Teaser pic of insulation install progress!
The white area is how it will look when done!

I may have missed how you are doing the ceiling, but is it just the white material
Framed with 1 x material?

Do a little everyday and soon that ceiling will be done and on to the next project for the garage.

Thanks 1/2 cup,
Dress in layers, thermal long johns/socks/long sleeve shirt.

Then firehouse work pants that are insulated, 2nd pair of socks, insulated redwing work boots. Light sweatshirt, 2nd heavy sweatshirt good work gloves, 2nd work gloves on stove being warmed up rotate them if hands get cold.

Worked out in garage from 9 am till 4pm. Was pretty comfy even with outside temp in single digits garage was around 40 once stove got going.
I only have about 1/3 of garage ceiling insulated. The rest is only wood attic floor so have lots of heat loss through the ceiling yet.
But happy with the heat I had in relation to the outside temp!

There is the blue insulation batting above the white styrofoam. The attic trusses are 2x6
the batt insulation is r23,
white styrofoam is r9
Attic floor is osb for the most part some light duty pallet boards mixed in also.

I have limited time after work during the week. Takes 1 hour to get wood stove going good and up to nice temp. Then it's dark out and I only have the 1 flood light.
Plus the wife wants help with the kids doing home work and baths in the house.

Gets more into March/April I can sneak some nights out there.
I did a lot of the wall insulation this summer at night after work.

Sub: loving the description of your outfit and the glove warming to battle the cold. i also don't know how all of you handle the cold so well. ceiling will look great when you are done.

keep up the great work and feel free to add pictures of the outside and more pictures of your garage when you can. you know we all like pictures almost better than the posts describing everything.

take care and hope the Bailey's is warming you up.

Glad you have heat in there Sub. Now doing anything will be easier when it's as cold outside as it is right now.

I feel your pain on the cold temperatures outside! Its cold here too in northern Indiana, It makes it harder to get motivated to get out and do things in DaBarn and it seems like everything takes longer to do to when its cold, come on spring

That paneling looks really good with wood accents boxed out! Probably will keep a lot brighter inside with light reflecting off the panels too.

This coming week looks a little more promising with temperatures. After -16 wind chill yesterday, they're saying possibly mid 40's by next weekend! Heatwave!

Looking good Sub. The insulation makes it so much better. I see there are a few of us that are expecting the heat wave next week end. Might even throw the bathing suit on and head to the beach. 40*F is tanning weather, right?

Re: Yea Old Garage

xtremek, yea I might go out in shorts and flip flops if the weather get up to 40 and finish up the insulation project!

40-50 degrees in March is the best weather!
after a long cold winter 40-50 in march feels like 60-70 of late summer or early fall!

just before the start of Mud season. have enough snow to go out and ride the ATV's in a have fun but the temp is nice and warm that you don't need to be super bundle up to enjoy being outside!

Guys thanks for your comments!

This is the middle kid!
Posing pic with the kid though he did put the screw in the end of that board!

He Also drilled a lot of the pilot holes!

He had a lot of fun helping out!
Thanks for your comments!

Not else much new but making progress on the insulation. Slow and steady I guess.

Love having the stove though, outside temp is 30ish and I'm nice and warm in here at around 50, closer to 80 right above the stove.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Almost had a major oops moment!

Had ladder up on little dolly platform and leg slipped off tumbling me towards the car!

The car is fine nothing touched it! I'm okay as well just bruised ego which I'll take in stride.

So far the only damage the car has undergone during this build is a small scratch on the rear from my pocket knife as I walked by. Though there has been 2 close calls now.

The dangers on having your vechile stored in the garage your building at the same time?
I guess but said vechile is driving force behind the garage build! Plus it's nice to have to look at for motivation?
Dramtic pic taken of the leaning ladder,
No Mopars were harmed in this event!

Sub: it's going to be hard for you to start P90x with me tomorrow if you are going to hurt yourself today. please be careful especially if your kids are watching because when they are laying in the hospital and you ask what were they thinking and they say you showed them how to do it your heart will sink a lot.

speaking of which why did you have the ladder on the cart? i'm guessing because the cart was in the way and you didn't want to take the time to move it? :dunno:

your car looks happy sitting inside the garage so BEE CAREFUL.

cheers

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives pretty much sums it up,

Didn't want to move the cart and I had already been up/down the ladder there 4 times but didn't look at the base the last trip up and a over we go!

Nothing to shocking was only on 2nd step when it shifted.
Could have been way worse if I was up higher!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: I had a neighbor that is about your age up on a ladder changing a light bulb as I was driving by. I just kept driving and didn't want to bother him. when I came back home about 30 minutes later there was the MEDIC 1 (aid car that firemen use here) and he was in a wheelchair for about 2 months after 2 weeks in the hospital because almost permanent paralyzed.

BEE CAREFUL PLEASE and especially don't do that sort of thing with the kids watching because they do as they see Dad do.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives I'm pretty careful, and it was just me out in the garage at that time,
But good lesson learned just the same!

I just shared my dumb ladder trick with you all here at garage journal.

It was I just didn't double check the bottom leg placement on the dolly cart before going up.
Heck it was my 4 trip up the ladder in that spot for board placement on the ceiling.
Just always check ladder placement before using!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Rough in insulation. Installed!

Have 1 run left which is the behind the car next to the wall,

Gonna need a full day to due that as the car will need to be moved so will want to work on other things also when the car is moved out of the garage.

No more ladder tricks either!
