Re: Yea Old Garage

Are you getting ready for the white stuff? I had to say it!

nope not really yet.

well sort of. I guess.

the Outside project of the garage are done. for this year.

the Emergency ATV Plow is within 5' of the ATV Work shop and there are 2 ATVS in the workshop that the Plow could go onto.
Heck the Emergency ATV Plow is always 5' away from the ATV workshop.
"it also double's as the Mini dozer blade" if/when needed.
2wheel dolly cart for moving atv plow is in the workshop as well for easy plow moving.

The Primary ATV plows are still in there summer loft storage but I can have them down and ready in 3 hours.

I can be winter ready in 3 hours give or take.
get plows down from summer loft storage,
Move to ATV workshop. Put down cardboard in ATV Workshop to help protect the flooring and soak up all the snow melt.

Put Rear Blade on ATV with the Ice Rippers.
Get sleds down for loft storage for the kids to use.

Get the Salt spreader out of storage shed and find a place in workshop for spreader.
check spreader flow gate and motor that they are working.

Have had the spreader for 3 years and used it for 4 hours for Logging trail seeding which I will have to due this spring again. But Its for Salt spreading if needed I have 8 bags of Ice melt to use if/when I need to.

thanks Carl I remember last year we had a 8" early snow fall that was here for a week before it all melted away.

are your ready for snow?

Re: Yea Old Garage

thanks for posting, and I didn't get the camper shed done.

I got the camper parking area graded out and flattend and ready to park the camper in instead of the yard next to the house.

I think the camper may just get tarps over the roof for this year.
just found a seam popped in the roof and had to fix this last weekend. Had to air out the bed as it leaked down onto the bed.
grrr. such is life with a camper I suppose.

I noticed the same problem with our first camper before it's first winter. Took the mattress off and stood it on it's side on a few pieces of 2X with plastic over the top. IIRC my problem was a window that needed resealing with some caulk. I couldn't tell if it was metal sided, but the seams on those need to be looked at at some point to and probably need a little touchup.

We were at a funeral home for a family friend last week and his granddaughter who is about my daughter's age grabbed on to my wife and was talking about all the fun times they all had when we camped together. You may think it is a PITA from time to time, but your kid's memories will make it all seem worthwhile when they are older.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: do you get the TREEHOUSE BUILDER'S SHOW in your area? reason i'm saying so i hear you are having your kids tear up your house while you are trying to get a project started or finished. so how about building them a treehouse, fort or just a small play house where they can destroy or clean up or create?

i remember remodeling my house and we have the smallest crawlspace, but it is cement floor down there (yes i had a mason build my house and remodel it so every room pretty much at one time was an exterior wall). anyway while i had the crawl space open for electrical or plumbing access the kids that were maybe 5 to 10 years old would play down there. i know i'm a terrible parent, but those kids were maybe the happiest kids in their school cause we let them play.

anyway thought i'd throw that out there. about the only parenting advice i can give you is to PAY ATTENTION to who they play or hang out with cause they will tend to be like those kids. you are who you hang out with so i'd drive my kids maybe sometimes 30-45 minutes to friend's homes they went to school with instead of just letting them out the front door and playing with a few of the neighbor's kids that didn't have any or very few manners.

they have watched and maybe helped you fix up YEE OLD GARAGE and i can almost guarantee they want a place of their own. got scraps?? check out the woodworking 101 thread and learn a few more skills and i bet some of those guys have built something like i'm talking about.

cheers

Re: Yea Old Garage

krcoomer,

thanks for your insight I'll have to make sure we go camping a few times next summer.

the Kids Helped me build some quick and easy tire covers out of some scrap boards for this winter to keep the tires from getting sun beat.

Drives,

Kids Playhouse thread.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=324381

I need to get back to building on it and have the kids help me.

they have a play area outside small fort and slide/sand box and swings.
and the ATV workshop as well, but they like to sneak into the house and eat snacks and watch TV and then when the wife gets back home there's a mess and it stress's her out.

any way I'll look for the tree house builder show thanks for the idea's.

Re: Yea Old Garage

got my winter supply of firewood for the garage cut up and stacked inside.
Plus trailer on the left is stored loaded for when/if I need it this winter.

just a bunch of stick wood ran through a buzz saw to make quick and easy firewood. A real pain to stack but it lights quick due to small size and works out well in the garage for me.

Sub: i noticed you had a good idea for a playhouse or treehouse sort of build with that old deer stand so did you need fasteners or materials or just more time? anyway BJ just posted up a simple ground level playhouse he built for his kids maybe on a weekend so check out the Woodworking 101 thread.

great job with rounding up all that firewood.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub, well done. Will that be enough wood to see you through the winter?

Regards

Wood supply should last for the winter,

It depends on how many day's I work in the garage and the outside temp on those day's.

Though I had the same size pile for last winter and I started out without any insulation in the ceiling last year. Ceiling insulation was the winter project for last year. This year its getting Ceiling finished off to how I want it, Then maybe start on the inside walls and work on some electrical and having lighting would also be a good thing.

the 2nd trailer is still loaded and stored 50 yards away and I have a split wood pile 1/4 mile away that is the size of both the loaded trailers.
I have enough wood for the winter.

heck I have 3 "2 years dead" standing trees that are marked for Firewood when I get around to cutting them up.

Re: Yea Old Garage

I did it! I made it all the way through this build. First, you saved this little shop. It looks like it had good bones, luckily. But, now, it matches the house really well and the toys seem to be happily out of the elements.

I don't know if I could do it over a 4+ year time span. So, I give you credit for that, big time. I'm the type that has to dive in head first and go at it until it's done. But, if I started 4 years ago, I'd be done, now. I didn't think of that one. Haha.

Most of all, I enjoyed seeing your kids smiles and reading (in between the lines) how good you have it. So, you got a fan over here in Salt Lake.

Oh... and lastly, I dig the hell out of that Charger. Very nice!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives haven't started a fire yet in the garage this year maybe over x mass break I'll get one going!

For now the inside temp is around 10-20 degrees better then outside temp.

I still have air gaps under the doors and around some Windows but it's better than 3 years ago when the Windows where still plastic!

Snow pic with the soffits all installed!
Sure looks pretty to me!
Merry Christmas all from yea old garage!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: one thing that really cause damage is moisture and bugs so if any water (or snow in your case) is getting in on your wood it won't be good. i'm guessing the fix for the drafts or gaps is going to happen this summer, but if you want to keep moisture and air out before then you might spray in some expanding foam and one brand is GOOD STUFF or just start caulking.

happy holidays to you and your growing family and here's to a great 2017. i've enjoyed our time here and one the Get Healthy or Weight Loss thread this last year and hope to continue that fun next year and well into the future.

I AGREE YEE OLD GARAGE LOOKS AWESOME!! WELL DONE!!

cheers

Re: Yea Old Garage

I know drives and I need to get my rocks arrange that they drain the water away,

I'm thinking I redue the rocks up to the garage wall and then slope them away and fill in the cracks with cement to help shed the water? This might be in 3-4 years when I have the funds to have a cement floor poured in the garage. I'm doing it backwards but I didn't have the funds to afford the poured slab, but I had enough money to buy the trusses roof purlins and Sheet metal for the roof and had a shelter for the car and truck for the last 3 years while I find the time and Money to fix it up as I go.

since that first winter I have made some progress every summer. As Time/Money/Ambition allow.

Happy X mass to you and yours as well.

All the boards in ground contact are treated and have several coats of stain on them as well.

Im still learing as I go on a lot of things but so far so good I guess.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: you are doing amazing with YEE OLD GARAGE. most of us would have tore it down and probably got a loan to build one and then had that debt to pay off on our small Social Security checks. good for you for getting it done with the funds you have to work with. YEE OLD GARAGE LOOKS GREAT so keep improving it as you can.

take lots of pictures of the ground to earth contact cause even treated wood won't last long and maybe some of us might have an inexpensive fix or solution.

enjoy your holiday and good eating and you can jump on the weight loss or better eating bandwagon after your weight loss contest starts. me i've gone down that road several times and it never ended up where i wanted it to so this year i'm actually trying to lose weight during the holidays and find a different road.

cheers and MERRY CHRISTMAS

Re: Yea Old Garage

Back to working on the ceiling insulation!

Outside temp in the single digits garage temp up in the 50-60 range!
Gotta love the wood stove for cheap heat!
Only took a hour to bring up to temp also.

I know it don't. Look like much but it was 3 hours of work to get the first 2 sheet on this run up.

Have to make temp holding devices so the bats don't fall down until I can get the styrofoam up and in place.
Temp holding device is stapled up bird feed bags!
Recycling at its finest! I guess

Thanks for viewing

Don't you love the warmth?:bounce: I use a 1x4 across the studs to hold it up temporarily until I get both ends stapled up, then take the 1x4 down. Whatever works.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Had a day home from work due to icy roads so I got in some garage time.

but first had to put on the Yak Trax for crossing the ice skating rink that had become my drive way.

Pic of the Ice rink driveway, then a Pic of my Ice ripping setup,
Pic of my work crew following behind the Ice ripping a good 2 hours of making driveway laps the crew had a blast every 10 min or so there was a pit stop with the crew changing there racing sleds.

Last Pic of the how the driveway ended up. pretty decent the truck came out the drive way in 2wd this morning so happy with how my Ice ripping went I suppose.

Got 4 hours of work in the garage putting up more ceiling insulation.

Sub: great job on the driveway and some great quality family time to boot. i wish i would have had some anti skid boots on last week when i slipped on the ice 2 times and hurt my knee. hoping it isn't a tear and just sore from being stretched. I know if i weighed less i probably wouldn't have slipped.

4 hours in the garage must have been nice, but no picture updates? or were you watching PACKER 1966 & 1967 game films to prepare you for their next Super Bowl win? i was 10 & 11 and still remember those two games and i know 1st game they beat the Kansas City Cheifs and it was either the Cheifs or Raiders for #2. is #15 still alive cause i don't recall him passing?

cheers and stay warm!!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives I got another 4x8 sheet of Styrofoam up.
it seems like pretty slow progress. I guess but spent the first 20 minutes getting the fire going good and pull truck outside. go and get the batteries for the saw and drills from the ATV workshop. set up the ladders where I need them and tend to the fire some more.

then is look at the space for the next sheet take down some of the temp holding boards.
put up the bird seed bag to hold the insulation in place at the 2' mark then make setup some of the 1x4 board to hold via cross bracing from other temp 1/4 boards.
tend to the fire again. once the area is staged and ready for the new sheet on insulation its measure the size for final cutting and fitment of the insulation piece. Cut out and then place up in ceiling and secure with some temp holding brackets. Force fit along 3 edges being carful not to break off a chunk on the insulation sheet.
then measure for the covering 1x4 board and then cut that board and place.

Tend to the fire again maybe. once the 1x4 is up and in place measure out for where to drill in for the holding screws drill hole and then secure with 3" screw when the first screw hits home drill 2nd hole and put in 2nd holding screw.

due this for 2 holding boards and all of a sudden its 4 hours later it seems like I should be able to knock one of these out in 1 hour but I'm going slow and making sure not to mess up as this is the final fit and finish more or less of the garage ceiling.
have some trim work to due but the long holding boards are in place to stay and they take time all on there own.

Re: Yea Old Garage

SUB: as i've said many many times just starting a project on a TO DO LIST might take longer than the actual TO DO. that's why i'm looking forward to a clean benchtop as soon as i cure some or all of my FSD (Flat surface disease).

some of the guys with garages huge as a football field or the ones that have floors you can eat off of just don't understand.

GREAT OUTSIDE THE BOX THINKING with the BIRDSEED BAGS holding up the insulation. if you happen to ever run out of bags another option i just saw was putting some staples almost all the way in the ceiling joists and running twine or heavy yarn or thread criss crossing from staple to staple to hold up the insulation.

just a question and just curious why you used styrofoam instead of sheet rock?

nice work and did you enjoy the heat while you were working maybe in your T shirt?

Re: Yea Old Garage

probably over 1/3 of the Styrofoam in the garage ceiling was free.
also most of the Styrofoam and or polystyrene in the walls was free. I think I paid maybe $20 for 4 sheets of Polystyrene. which was delivered right to my garage gotta love CL.

I don't like working with sheet rock or I haven't worked with it very much.

I'll probably kick myself first time I put a nice hole into the Styrofoam but I guess I'll deal with that then.

Your driveway looks like mine right next to the house did yesterday. The road I live on was just was even worse. But fortunately for me, warm weather closely followed the ice. And insulating open ceilings is always slow work

Re: Yea Old Garage

Yep I was glad I had the Ice ripper's rig up on that ATV to use.

It has saved me a few times from having a Ice skating rink to try and park on.

I can manage okay but the wife gets a little more nervous than me. the high light was when she parked the truck on the drive to go get the mail and half way across road to mail box the truck started sliding down the drive way!

though I made sure I worked it pretty good I am in need of propane and wanted to make sure the propane truck has a good chance of getting in and out without much fuss.

I have a set of stock tires with chains I want to put on the quad. They would help with Ice breakup as well but on the front brake drum the stud is spun so that drum is stuck onto the rim.
Its either spend $80 for a new drum or find a used one for $20 or wait and get a disc brake conversion kits for $250 or so. I have been just dealing with it but having chains on the tires would chew this ICE up a lot better as well.
my tire chains wont fit the tires on the quad now as they would fall down between the lugs and this tires are taller and wider than the chains I have.

such is life I suppose just glad I was able to have this to get the ice worked up to make the driveway passable.

its time to start saving up some $ to get the disc brake conversion and then find the time to actually put the dis brake conversion kit on the ATV!

Had I nice snow day off of work and got in some garage time.

Pic of the garage in the morning with the snow coming down Is always neat looking to me.

took 2 hours with the ATV to get the driveway plowed out, then got the truck Moved out of the garage to give me room to work.

Power went off at 9:30am and didn't get power back till around 4:30pm,

since garage has wood stove for heat I was able to work out in the garage and stay nice and warm.

more work on getting the ceiling insulation done.

got the last of the 4x8 Styrofoam sheets up, will be all smaller sheets from now on.

pics of how it looks with 2/3 of the ceiling up and in.

also my simple jig for holding up the 8' 1x4 until I can get it secured in place.

Most times I have one of my kids help but they was already in bed for the install of this board late last night.
