Local estate sale this morning with lots of signs and toys. They had an old toolbox in the back of the garage so I decided to show up early. Was greeted by 5 sign & toy guys standing around at the driveway gate along with a "parking attendant". Driveway was 1/2mile long with gate at the 1/4 mile mark. Was informed by the parking gal that no parking in the drive, no numbers or sign-up sheet, just wait at the gate and it would be a sprint at opening..... wonderful. It went about as well as expected, only redeeming factor was the prices were reasonable. Picked this lot up.

Hit one sale today. As another "SNOWMAGGEDON" is scheduled for this afternoon/evening they decided to close at 3, I got there at 10 til 3. managed to scrounge up this bit and cringed a bit when I saw posted prices ,but hoped for the best and got out of there for less than a Big Mac combo meal. Highlights are the Hinsdale box, no sign of any Hinsdale sockets, butthey were Cadmium plated. Partial Dayton wrench set,Petersen Vise Grips, Craftsman DOE and pliers,PowrKraft socket, Cornwell socket ,and a Proto nutdriver. I didn't get the S-K box and sockets when I looked at the price for reference, this was day 2 of the sale and I really, really hope there was more in that box originally:

Couple of country sales today. First had nothing of note beyond their exorbitant prices--I guess they figure since you drove all that way, you won't leave empty handed. I did.
Second stop was the clean-out of the town's old hardware store. There was a lot more furniture, cabinets, beer signs and broken **** than actual old tools, so that was disappointing, but this time I was going to buy something, dammit!
I scrounged through an old, dilapidated cantilever tool box mostly filled with nuts and bolts and came up with the scriber from a combo square (I always grab these since so many squares are missing them--this is a thick one that fits my Goodall-Pratt). Looks like @Rickster could use a couple!
Next was the 1951 Snap-on PS-12 "Loxocket" extension. The locking pin is strong and responsive, but the PO saw fit to gouge the shaft with three big grinder divots so he could see it from across the shop...
Then I found the Dzus (Snoopy) tool (my third), this one made by MARCO USA with what looks like a circle with a check mark logo.
I then found a Stanley breast drill on another table and told the owner, who I'm on good terms with, that if he wanted to sell it for $24 he should really get the crank and second handle out of that tool box and fit them to the drill. I helped him do it.
Finally, crammed under a table I pulled out the wooden 14" screw clamp. Unmarked except for the old strip of paperboard that says "Penn Dutch Clamp". I don't know if or when any Pennsylvania Dutch made it, but it is in really great shape with no broken threads that so often afflict these things.
Not counting 2-3 gallons of gas, total cost was $8.

I did also find a Whatzit. It was coated with rust and stubborn mud in a box with old (1860's) clothing irons. Giving this thread first crack at it. My first thought was antique rocketry, almost like a flechette, but it's soft, porous metal. Malleable iron if I had to guess. Next thought was a stake of some kind, but for what, I don't know. That slot-head brass plug will not budge. I chewed it up a little trying.

Thanks, Snip's. Old Man Roger suggested the same thing. I still can't get the plug out. I've had it standing on its nose clamped in a mill vise so I can fill up the cavity above the plug with a little pool of Evaporust. The next day it's gone so I know it's seeping inside, but so far has not loosened the rust in the threads enough to turn.

Wrap it with some Saran Wrap and tip it over. If the evaporust comes back out, tip it over again.

OR that's not common to find wood screw clamps with actual wood screws! I have one (out of 26), and its my largests at 20"

Wow Lots of nice finds! I'm not finding any sales worth going to - maybe tomorrow? -but a threat of rain in the AM so maybe not...

Now next W/E they are reopening a local Col FM that has been closed for almost 10 years! it was always a good one so fingers crossed people remember!

The most common use for signal lights in aviation is from control towers to give signals to no-radio aircraft. Since the 1960's, no radio aircraft have been effectively excluded from getting into areas where Air Traffic Control needs to give them instructions/clearances, so signal lights have become almost obsolete. here is an article about them: https://pilotinstitute.com/light-gun-signals/

That said, because of the extra color in this kit, and its Army Air Force (WWII) era instruction sheet, it was intended for more than the basic signals, and may well have been used for signaling between aircraft when one or more planes lost radio contact.

The decals on that Hinsdale are quite nice, too bad someone ripped out one of the dividers.

What a day yesterday was to show up at an estate sale after an 87 mile drive through a storm, rain, high winds with tornado warnings....

Picked up a beautiful Delta DP220 and a Delta 40-440 scroll saw with original paint in great condition...
The bad news, I'm 72 and all the machines were in a basement that had a set of stairs with 15 steps and with no assistance to move the pieces....
Grabbed my tool "Go Bag" and went at it and disassembled both the floor mounted drill press and scroll saw and hand carried all the pieces out to my vehicle in the middle of the torrential downpour....

This morning... Time to start moving everything into my garage....
IMG_2356.JPG

Nobody wanted this Toledo draftsman chair and I wanted a stool for my new workbench project... Offered $31 and now its mine...

IMG_2357.jpg

IMG_2358.jpg

IMG_2359.jpg

Also the new owner of these two lights...

IMG_2361.jpg

Vintage Century Repulsion / Induction motor....

IMG_2360.jpg

I was beat after the drive home last night, but all in all a pretty good haul...

It ***** that you had to dismantle and lug it all upstairs and into a storm, but then, you **** too!

Absolutely. Also, the provision for 12 volt use could mean the SOF, Supervisor Of Flying, who patrols the airfield during flight operations could use it from his vehicle if he saw something unsafe in a comm out situation.

Amazingly, when I compared it to one I picked up a couple of years ago, I found that they are twins! The one I've had (on the left) has some thread damage.

Kind of expected: minimal here: I picked up a nice 130+piece Craftsman bit set in a case - the case has some shallow storage on the outside panels too.

Also a broom & mop snap in rack; I'm thinking this may get used to store some camp gear so its not floating, or maybe in the T-Van for tools.

Had a good day at a yard sale in Clute, TX this morning. I got 10 lbs of E6013 weld rod, rod container and 2 - S579G Starrette snap gage sets for $20. Also, an oxy/acetylene rig with 2 cutting torches, welding tips, and rose bud for $60. Finally, a Hobart auto-darkening hood for $10. The guy had $100 on the bottles and torch and had all the other gear in a separate box. I asked if the box was included and he said, "yea! In fact, just give me $60 for the lot and it's yours!" Couldn't pass up that deal.

Got this poor beaten up stanley Bailey no 4 with a corrugated bottom. They must have lost the lever cap at some point and replaced it with a chunk of steel. Either way I can use it for parts. Only paid 5 bucks for it7747FA59-B6F6-4FFB-938F-C78C27526FDA.jpeg

Those Fairmount sockets are cool, kinda remind me of Circle U or NB. Anyone know who made these?

@chenry318 I can think of a few times that socket light would have been handy. Sadly, I can also remember times where I've had plenty of light, but still had to work by feel because of obstructed access (poor design).

I’m sure it’s one of those things that now that I have it I’ll find a reason to use it. Or, I’ll forget I have it when I have that hard to reach fastener and just got by feel like I always have.

Loooks like a lever cap, minus the lever. Suspect it broke, and got filed to shape On top. Much easier than filing the rest to that shape. Still works by tightening the screw instead of the quick snap of the lever.

Wish I had a dollar for every time that's happened to me...

The worst thing is, thinking / feeling like you've bought something, can't find it when you need it, assuming you either didn't actually buy it or threw it away, buying another, then finding the first one in untouched condition...

Blades and lever caps should be readily available, I'd be tempted to clean it up, replace the cap and blade and stick it on my user shelf, if I didn't have so many users already.
