One thing I really appreciate about HJE is that they know how to pack a box. If I order a dozen items from Amazon, Walmart, or Zoro, I'll receive at least a dozen packages at different points throughout the week even though they often ship from the same warehouse. When I ordered over 30 items from HJE, I received one surprisingly small and extremely densely packed box.

Amen. I've received from the Jeff Bezos Space Program one 32 lb. bag of cat litter bouncing around inside a giant box with 4 feet of semi-crumpled butcher paper and one ignition rotor in its little thin cardboard box flying around in the void.

Last week I received a large box with just some things in it (and the usual modest effort at air bags or butcher paper), the tape seams on the box broke some, and the shower curtain that was most likely picked and packed slipped out along the way.

Hey Jori, how has Wright been with backordered tools? Are they shipping from Wright to HJE in a reasonable amount or is it still a few months wait for stuff?

They've been much better. There are still a few items that have been on backorder for a month or so but most things come in around 2 weeks.

This, whenever I have ordered from them and had shipped to the UK everything has arrived safely and the shipping boxes have survived, this is not that common in my experience with tool orders from the USA.

I just received a bunch of Grayvik pry bars and nail pullers I ordered from HJE a couple weeks ago, but I'm still in for HJE day. I know I'll find something.

Do you have the springy punches?

How they work:
I've had a set, bought from the patent holder, for over a decade now. The ***** punch isn't as precise as I would like (poor technique?), but the rest are great for their specialty tasks. The brad starter is way under used, I don't think of it until I'm about out of swear words.

How they work:
I have a cheapo, not the Mayhews. If I got some good ones, I might like them better. That is an idea for HJE day.

I was kind of hoping Jori could get some of those Channellock pry bars. I've already screen shot a few items that I would like to get.

"Take a minute to confirm your ability, NOW, to log-in to your account on their site. They've changed the website some and logins are apparently a known issue. If you have issues, you'll have to email them for correction (address at the top of the login page). Should be an easy solution, but extra steps, and I bet they get a flood of requests right before Epstein Day."

Thanks for the heads up, I couldn't login, just sent an email.

I have a couple Starrett and they are very high quality, also a little pricey now days.

I had to wait several months for my new metric wrench set because of the lack of available USA steel. Didn't really mind, they are very nice.

Jori, listening to the YouTube videos of some of your talks with your dad, I heard you lament how it's hard for a business to be in "the middle" nowadays -- not competing in the cheap/adequate zone, and not competing at the ultra/fanatic/luxury zone. I think I also heard you mention work gloves at some point and that made me think, Vermont Glove?

Work gloves made in Vermont, goat leather, not at all cheap, but I've heard they last and last. Some of your construction retail customers might dig these.

 $110 for work gloves! I'll have to see if they have a significant dealer discount. Nice looking gloves though. Have you ever used a pair?

I have not, but friend of a friend is in the forestry biz in New England and endorses them.

They even have a repair program. Alas, $30, but shipping back may be included there.

Pipeknife!
(I like the looks of that wedge.)

I have a knife like that, sold by CR Lawrence. I dunno if they make them or resell someone else's. They are quite useful, as a long reach utility knife, but also there are some special blades that are potentially very useful. A basically double length utility blade, and some serrated saw things. Useful even if you don't cut out glass windows.

Something else to consider for your HJE order: Norseman drill bits. Got any broken/missing spots in your drill bit holder? They sell individual bits.

Also, sets. Here's Jori describing all of the different coatings and hardnesses:

Made in America, and last I heard, a union shop.

We're about a month away from Epstein's Day so let's get some boring administrative things out of the way:

1. If you haven't placed an order with us in a while you might try logging into the site. We upgraded to Shopify but old accounts seem to have a problem logging in. I can take care of it real quick, but you just have to reach out and let me know you're having a problem.

2. If you've never placed an order with us you need to create an account on our website (don't worry we don't send a bunch of annoying emails). After you've done that message me (either on GJ or email) and I'll add you to the Garage Journal Super Secret Discount Club.

3. T-shirts are being made by a generous donation from Wright Tool. We're also doing koozie's this year that are sponsored by Malco. Much more deals and discounts to come. I'll work everything out in the next week so stay tuned for more details.

If our accounts get reset to be able to login do we need to message you to rejoin the Garage Journal discounts?

I bought the Norseman drill bit set and extractor set when HJE had them on sale for their Epstein's Day I think maybe 3 or 4 years ago. Great sets. Would love to see these on sale again.

This one here? I got it a year or so ago, still need to go after that broken bolt... but it does look like some high quality stuff.

Such a cool place to wander around in. Glad I didn't bring a lot of money when I went there last time!!
