Very inspirational build. I've been in construction for the better part of 40 years, but have learned a lot from reading your thread here.

Congratulation on your upcoming anniversary!

Lin and Dave,

Congrats on the 50th milestone. Tom and I are also 2 months apart in age, with me being the eldest by 2 months. We celebrated 35 years in May (we've known each other for 43 years).

What you have undertaken is amazing. I hope you get a break again in the weather, but, if it doesn't happen, then there's always Spring. Keep safe. And have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Congrats on the 50th.

Nicola's mum and dad had theirs earlier this year too.

I hope that we will get to big numbers one day too.

Lin and Dave, Happy 50th anniversary and happy belated 71st birthday. Hope you have some good weather in the next couple months so you can get that roof finished. That way you'll have it made in the shade next spring and summer.
Please be safe and take care. Believe me I know the aches and pains such work can create on us older folk. I only turned 60 last month and am realizing I have to slow down and contemplate each and every step and move before making it when doing such work. Use to, my mind couldn't keep up with my body, these days my body doesn't want to keep up with my mind. :(

One good thing, you can celebrate the anniversary same time as T'givin and won't have to loose another weekend for that. :)

Rita and I will be thinking of you. God Bless

Every so many years the anniversary will come on the same day as Thanksgiving, however this year it falls the same as it did in 1976. Which marks today as the exact anniversary ( 34 years ago ) that I was put into ICU with a heart attack. So Lin spent that one by the bedside.
Lots of Thanks since then.

We really appreciate all the kind words from you all.

Enjoy

Lin and Dave

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

I am completely amazed by the work you have done. And with perfection. When I was younger, I spent many hours with my Grandfather who was a self employed cabinet maker. I learned so much from being his helper in the shop. When he passed away, I was 28 years old. Felt like I had lost my best teacher. Following this thread has made me realize how much I miss his wise influence. It's been 21 years that he's been gone. Everyone needs a oldtimer (I say this with complete respect) to learn proper work ethic and pure craftsmanship. Dave and Lynn, you are truly a fine example of what Americans need to have in today's word. A great influence and teacher of how to do things the correct way.

Happy Holidays to you folks!:)

Happy Anniversary / Birthday / Thanksgiving .......

Simply amazing. Well done, quality craftsmanship.

I just read the entire thread and couldn't find one piece of information. What are the dimensions of the barn?

Sorry bout that.
The outside is 24' X 32'. The height is 21' 6" to top of center section. Each bay is based on an eight foot stall.( if this was to be used for animals)
Normally this would have worked best if each was 10' and then the demensions would have been 30' x 40'. However because of the size of the lot and the fact that the septic system was already installed, and I didn't want to move it, and didn't want to cut or remove the big tree to the left and also thought that if we made the barn larger than the house that it would be out of proportion. So we went with the 24 x 32 which also lets us have very little waste.
Thanks for asking. Sure hope you meant that was the only piece.

Well thanks for asking.
And again my standard excuse , “the weather *****”
Lin and I are both well just gettin older. Got everything to finish the rest of the roof and haven’t had two good days in a row since. ( Mid Nov. ) Either rain, cold, too windy or something . And of coarse the holidays.
So we spend time inside catching up on indoor stuff. Got out our old camcorder that used Hi8 tape and I am learning how to transfer to digital video, edit and burn to dvd. And do it on the cheap too. Lin is doing some crewel and we are trying to stay warm.
Got 2” of light snow last night and nothing has moved in the town all day. Not what we were used to up north.

Yep, the weather does **** at the moment! Ahh well, gives you more time to plan I suppose:)

Glad you are both doing ok. You never cease to amaze me with the next bit of technology that you are grappling with. I wish my parents would at least give it a go-my dad can just about turn on the the computer and read his emails but that is as far as it goes:(

I just picked up on something in one of your earlier posts regarding thanksgiving & your wedding anniversary-if I'm right, were you around 36 when you celebrated that one in hospital?

Great job on the math. Just turned 37 five weeks before. Scary time for us both. Three kids in school and self employed. Two in high school and the youngest in eight grade.
Five weeks in the hospital, two and half in ICU. Took five months to get the ok to do some work and at least a year to say that I felt normal. Never have got back to before but have learned how to live with it and work around the limits.
It does make you see life a bit different than before though.

It sure does! Makes you and your build even more of an inspiration.

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

Hey thanks for asking.
Nothing to update on the barn at the moment. The weather has however got a lot better and we have been out last couple days gettin some of the other things out of the way. Looking to have at it again very shortly.
Got the Harley running again today put a few miles on it to run some fresh gas thru the carb. Hadn't run it since last Oct. It is a 1993 with only 3200 miles on it.
Soon as we get some stuff started we will post it up.
Thanks Lin and Dave

Re: 70 Yr old couple building a barn (garage/workshop)

Before we get started again this year we needed to address how I would get the tin up on
the south facing wing by myself without bending it or doing other possible harm. The following
is what we have come up with.

THE PROBLEM ON THE SOUTH SIDE IS THE BANKING
FROM FILLING AND MAKING THE PAD LEVEL

ON THE NORTH SIDE, AS THIS PICTURE SHOWS
LIN AND I USED 20 FOOT 2 X 4'S
TO SLIDE THE TIN UP ON THE ROOF
ALSO WITH THE HELP OF A ROPE ATTACHED TO THE TOP CENTER

tinhoist032211_01.gif

THIS HOME MADE HINGE
USING TWO GATE PIVOTS
WILL BOLT TO THE FASCIA 2 X 6
tinhoist032211_02.gif

IT IS A LITTLE HEAVY
BUT WE HAD ALL THE SCRAP AND PARTS
I WILL CUT SOME IT OUT
TO REDUCE THE WEIGHT LATER
tinhoist032211_03.gif

HALF INCH SHEET PLYWOOD CUT TO 39 INCHES WIDE
TWO CEDAR 2 X 4
tinhoist032211_04.gif

LOTS OF HOLES
LIGHTER AND LET WIND BLOW THRU
ALSO REMOVED SOME FROM HINGE
tinhoist032211_05.gif

MARKS SHOW WHERE WE NEED TO DRILL
WILL DO THIS IN THREE PLACES
AT 12 FEET, 24 FEET AND END
tinhoist032211_06.gif

HAND IS SO I DON'T DRILL INTO THE TARP
tinhoist032211_07.gif

LIFTED IN PLACE
SECURED WITH TWO HALF INCH BOLTS
tinhoist032211_08.gif

OUTSIDE SHOT
NOTE STRIP ON BOTTOM
LIP TO STOP TIN SLIDING OFF
tinhoist032211_09.gif

ATTACHING TWO PIVOTING LEGS
tinhoist032211_10.gif

MOMENT OF TRUTH
tinhoist032211_11.gif

NOT BAD
tinhoist032211_12.gif

AS YOU CAN SEE THERE IS NOT MUCH ROOM
BEFORE YOU GO DOWN THE BANKING
NOW IF WE COULD GET RID OF THE SPRING WIND
WE CAN GET BACK AT IT
tinhoist032211_13.gif

We hope you enjoyed this and that we may have been of some help to anyone
else that might have a need for it.
