Interesting way to frame the upstairs. I love the RED! I will be curious to see how your Dayton G73 heater does. I have a 20x24 and it gets it warm, but not really WARM, like its always heated. Good looking space!

Except for the wiring mess it looks great, I'm jealous. We won't get to insulate and drywall until next year.

That must have been a pain to drywall up to the peak in those small quarters.

Is the cupola the venting type?

It looks great!

I have 2 5000 watt units- we'll see how it works this winter...
Planning on adding an oil heat solution next year maybe...

Nope - cupola is not vented.
Every one that I've seen that was vented had a water leak issue at some point...

Yes I did buy it from Glenn!
Those guys are great!
I was originally going to buy both, but decided to wait until the building was done to get the second lift.
Now I'll wait until spring and get another lift from them when a suitable one becomes available...

Is this the "Glenn" You guys are talking about? http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/pts/4051806937.html

Is he the same Glenn from TEC Equipment in North Attleboro?

Thanks!

I've been trying to decide between the upfront costs of a waste oil heater or the long term costs of a propane unit for 2 years. Still haven't decided and I'm buying a building with propane heat, I guess I won't have to commit at home any time soon.

Why are you thinking oil over propane though?

That's the guy.
Can't recommend TEC enough.
I called them based on a web search, because I had found 2 cheap used lifts and wanted to hire them to check them out, remove them and install them here.
The first person that answered the phone was very helpful and ended up directing me to the service manager- we had a 20 minute conversation about the lifts I wanted them to check for me and decided they were too old to fit my needs- they were early 80's Benwil lifts that had been in a busy dealership since that time-
They didn't try to sell me anything, they were just knowledgeable and helpful at first contact.
I left my information, and told them what I was looking for and told them to call if they found something suitable for me...
I got a call within days from Glenn, and ended up buying one lift over the phone.
I was waiting for the building to be built, so when the floor was ready I scheduled the install with Glenn. They showed up on time, did a great job and were a pleasure to deal with.
I have since bought other equipment from them, and will buy more...
Main reason for going with TEC- the professional way my initial call was handled. Very impressed. It's all about service.

Don't have gas on my street, don't want a giant tank, don't know about gas VS oil...
Is propane better than oil in any substantial way?

Interior painting starts tomorrow-

Any tips on what primer to use on bare drywall?
And- can I leave the primer -using white- uncovered?

I'm planning Swedish blue for the bottom 5 feet of the interior walls- then a Swedish yellow stripe- then just white for the top...

Walls downstairs are 12' 7 '' high x 40'...that's a lot of primer!

Cleaner, cheaper (both fuel and maintenance)...those are the two main reasons for me.

100lb tank is not that large really. I would inquire about both scenarios and see what works for you.

Painting the walls white, then adding Swedish flag blue for the bottom 5 feet of the walls, then a narrow Swedish flag yellow stripe....

Maybe get the bottom floor done today?

Still have a lot of stuff to move, including the large press, welders, plasma cutter, torches, and a whole lot of parts...

But- at least now I can use it!

Excellent garage and a great build thread, but I love the cars even more!

Saabs were what got me into wrenching, my first car was a NG900 - and it was one of the first around with a 2.3 swap. Im good friends with the guys at Automotion, and have been to SCD, SIS, and SOC all a few times in the past - so Im sure our paths have crossed too! I still have an 86 SPG sitting in the garage at my rental property awaiting restoration!

Thanks!
Yup, I know Bo and Paul...
Must have crossed paths!
I am picking up an SPG as well, maybe to restore, maybe to part.
If I part it- may make the base model 2.1 a sleeper turbo...

Love the cupola. Was this custom built or a pre-fabbed one? Could you supply details on it, size, approx. cost, etc.
I just finished my 36'x26' 3 car a few months ago (also in Mass.) and would love to top it off with a similar cupola.
Thanks.

Thanks- my girlfriend was the one who decided we HAD to have a cupola...
It's a 48"x48" base, Newport model. All Azek-with the exception of the "roof" which is copper clad.
The weathervane and cupola all came from here: http://weathervaneandcupola.com/cupolas.html

I had questions- so I called and spoke with them, very helpful.
They offered me a significant discount on the base, cupola and weathervane over what was advertised on the site... and shipping was included.

There are 2 places on the east coast that I found that actually make the cupolas, one in ME and these guys in MD.
These guys were great to deal with, so I went with them.

Look at the site as to sizing, general rule is length of roof in feet x 1.25-1.50 to inches...

Be advised- this thing in total is well over 300 pounds- but in 3 pieces, depending on the pitch and height of your roof it may be a 3 man job to install...We used a 40' lift rented for the day.

Yup- works great.
Takes up very little space.
Craigslist...
Need to calibrate it for it's new spot...

Do you calibrate it often? My Snap-on dealer told me they really only need to be calibrated when the board or measuring head is replaced (and he's only ever had to replace 1 board)

No-I just got it and am installing adjustable "feet" on it so I can level it, then I'll calibrate it- hopefully just this once before it's likely trade up...

I see, not ideal for a short-term install, but they're designed to be bolted to the floor for the most accurate readings.

Looks great (as do all your cars).

Yellow Thunder is alive and well. Engine is much stronger now, running twin weber 44 DCNFs (among other things). I took her to a few Swedish Car Days. But she has not been to a Saab event in many years. She is purpose built for A/X now.

Used Solar City- very good experience so far.
Didn't want the conduit to be routed as it is, but ended up being the best alternative.
I just had the town inspection yesterday, so now I can paint the conduit. Hopefully it "disappears".
I now just need National Grid to show up to swap the meter and I can throw the switches, and wish for a sunny winter!

Power on!
Only took 3 weeks for the 2 inspections-town and then utility-
National Grid showed up Monday to complete a work order from September 2103!
BUT- then showed up yesterday to swap the meter to a new digital unit which can run backwards.
Solar is switched on and producing lower cost electrical power for my electric heaters.
Kind of exiting!

I met someone once.. At the Home Depot on Gold Star Blvd.
Saab like yours, same color, was the 2 stroke triple. He had some engine problem and was waiting for a trailer. Nice guy, said the 2 stroke made up for all the greenies with priuses..

In 1976 I worked summer at a garage that did saabs and volvos. A sonnet was our parts pickup car. It was the version with the pop up headlights. Very very loud inside, could not hear the radio over the car.

They are very nicely restored.

Your solar panels are very large but fit the building nicely. Adding solar panels to my future build may be the only way I get the wife's approval to build a garage . Are you feeding the house as well? Does it produce enough to run the house and heat the garage?
My wish would be the put panels on the garage roof but have it mainly feed the house. Reason being , I think it would look the best on the garage roof as opposed to the house roof (old farm house) and the new garage location would be the sunniest part of the yard.

Love you build. Very informative thread

Thanks in advance

Hey Wade,
The panels feed into the panel in the barn, and then the house panel and then the meter...So the power generated is used as needed by me-in the house or barn.
When I produce more Kwatts than I am currently using the surplus wattage goes back to the grid reducing my KWatt usage and is monitored by the new meter and my electric Co.
So- during the summer when sun is more plentiful and my usage is down, I'll likely end up with a credit from my utility (National Grid) and a fixed amount to the Solar Co.
During the winter when I'm using the most Kwatt- for the electric heat, lighting on more etc, and the sun is less plentiful- I'll pay a reduced bill to the utility and the same fixed monthly amount to my Solar company...
So hopefully over the course of a year the total cost for electricity is reduced significantly...
I will find out.
When we calculated the numbers before going forward with the installation, it looked very promising, but real world cost savings have yet to be realized or determined.
