Well my day didn't start too good.
First sale was way out in the country and advertised vintage tool boxes and barn tools. Ended up being an antiques dealer closing out of business, even at half price of what was marked not much there for me. Picked up a double headed shoe repair tool for $5.

Next stop was a bit painful. No scores but got on the ladies email list since they were having an upcoming sale CLOSE to me for a change with lots of tools. As I was heading out I was wishing them a good day and walked FACE FIRST into the glass door. Lucky I didn't break it, my poor nose or even get a nose bleed. Stunned me for a minute!

3rd stop not much but picked up a Ventures record album with a T-bucket hot rod on the cover for a buck.

4th stop looked like a bust but then I figured out stuff was scattered everywhere including tools. Picked up a USA made clamp on mini vise, a working General Electric AM/FM vintage radio and my FAVORITE find of the day, a sealed in the plastic NOS Husky New Britain socket and combo wrench set!

And I had lunch at my favorite Mexican restaurant for a day that turned out pretty good!

Waiting for the second sale now, full of machining tools. Slots of other people here drooling on the window while I'm hoping for the gray and red drawer toolbox....

Standing first in line for an estate sale, passing time on the phone. Who else is out today?

Still nothing... My last actual yard (estate) sale was Nov 28... One CL buy (The wood chest) and that has been it? :wtf: It's NEVER been this dead... :headscrat

I did get a couple of things from GJ members (Pics later today), and of course SS for xmas...

Meanwhile :willy_nil

Been deader than dead around her too outlaw. And we are having fall like weather on a lot of the days 30 to 45 degrees still. Weird weather this year.

Oh don't get me wrong, it's been dead here also along with the holiday activities with my wife and three girls, and duck/geese hunting I haven't had much time. Since the lake was frozen we didn't go hunting and so I hit two sales.

I got some stuff at the sales but haven't had time to take pictures. The second sale with the gray craftsman toolbox was really packed but he wanted some high prices on the stuff. Along with taking bids on the machine lathes and drills. He wanted $200 for the toolbox I was eyeing but it was painted light blue and needed some work so I passed.

I'll get some pics soon!

Just got back from picking up this 18 drawer combo for $100 off CL. Real straight, barely any rust, haven't taken it out of the car yet, so these are the CL ad pics. Top box has a build date stamped 11/72 inside of it.

Debating whether I'm just gonna flip it, or repaint the gray and sell my late 70's red/black combo... oh, and the missing emblem was in one of the drawers, with the keys for the top two boxes.

Great find Rick! You missed having the maximum stack available by 4 drawers. The ten Drawer was their biggest top and that was their best models; top, mid and bottom. (the "H Frame Roller IIR, or was it "I"? :headscrat

These came in the mail in the past week or so:

Quick Lock swivel base, and the larger of the two Colton Patent Vises, the smaller I showed for comparison, and I already had, and I also have one larger, so up to three of the clamp-on Coltons. The swivel base Colton's seem to be hen's teeth, but someone on GJ got one...

I'm sure you know this already but if not. You can take those SO punches to a dealer and get some new non pre-bent punches in exchange. Good score though.

No sales here, lot's of snow on the ground and not much on CL. Very jealous up here of you guys that are making scores.

Hit two estates and one auction. Blustery cold north wind dampened the mood for some early goers so I did well on the first estate. Came up empty handed one the second.... old lady estate. The auction wasn't much better . Took bid on a on two small lots and bailed. From the first estate I came up with
No. 23-1/2" Chapins- Stephens folding rule pat. date Dec. 22 1821 ! :rocker:
2- metal working hammers
Unmarked bore- has a Jennings twist so I'll have to check it out.
1/2" Wizard ratchet
4 hand dollies- at least 2 are Fairmount
ball peen hammer head
3 pair vise grips. Now guy's for those that may not know. There are 2 pat dates on these. 1942-the most common and the lesser common 1924. All three pair are 1924!:D
Heller reveal file holder ,all brass, with all four files!- the last one of these I had sold for 140 but it was still in the box unused. But for the two bucks this one cost I should come out ....ok:evil:

18.00 total at the estate

The auction was more expensive and less up side but I didn't want to leave empty handed.
# 460 Channel locks- the big boys, and a smaller pair of Sparta's
Set of Craftsman dikes and needle nose plier's
8" pair of Indestro adj. wrench
Craftsman filler gauge and a couple stray small combo wrench's
Stray SK sockets , extension and combo wrench
1/4" drive Snap-on socket set w/ speed wrench and 2 small combo wrench's.

Had to give 32.50 at the auction for a total today of $50.50.

This morning I took 6m worth of scrap metal to the local scrap yard and collected about $180 in cash. The metal was collected over the last 6m at estate sales. Mostly brass and copper with some aluminum and a bunch of batteries.

The scrap helps offset the cost of the rest of my estate sale purchases. I always toss any brass and aluminum I can find into my bucket as I shop.

Best part is I cleared out a corner of the garage.

6082fb7c20ea1386af6fb9af6d9bac68.jpg

Plus another $6 for 400lbs of steel ($0.015/lb)

Then headed to a local estate sale to see what was left. The sale was packed with stuff but not too much of interest. Mostly QVC ****. Owner was a hoarder and most items were new in box. Here is what I picked up for $24 (more than I normally would pay but I spent 30 mins digging around and didn't want to leave empty handed)

Everything here is unused except the scrap metal.

Wax and adhesive remover
Murphy oil soap
Krypton
Stainless canister
Lamp plugs and inline switches
Polishing pad
12 ft AC cord
Lock
3m adhesive clips
3" carriage bolts
Two clippers (Italy)
Some brass and aluminum for my next time to scrap yard (though I'll probably keep the rulers)

Not intended to sound defensive, but the drill hardly has a scratch on it. There's a couple on Fleabay now for $70 and it's as good as any of them.

I know that list prices aren't realistic even for new tools. Even the Snap On guys will give you some discount.

That's fine, but just don't be disillusioned to think it is the equivalent to the $308 you initially quoted. I used to be sale gung ho, thanks to this forum, till I realized that a.) many sellers have your same mentality with pricing and b.) Time is valuable and unless you happen to live in a hot bed of blue collar workers, or are extremely lucky, you will mostly be fighting over out dated worn out hand tools.

Here's my lot!

The first pic is of some slides I found, how do I find out how much their rated for?

Then the 6' level, has made in USA on it but no other stamping on it.

Then the BIG sockets!! I got one snap-on the 2 5/8" and the others are SK from 2" and down. There is also a Herbrand 2 1/8" in the bunch. Then there is the 2 really thick Proto sockets 3/4" drive that are sized 15/16" and 3/4". Then there's the DBE underlined craftsman wrench that I don't have much info except 624.5430-50

Then the second sale got me these SK sockets upfront including the swivels and craftsman in the back. The green long tray has SK Wayne with the metric values, I'm missing only 4 sockets I think. I might have them just need to dig in my SK collection but I've just been throwing it in the toolbox. Then there's the green box bottom, i suspect it's SK but the previous owner took the lid off and the latches.

Then the Proto pullers, there's 2 in the picture.

Not too bad of a sale I thought, since i gave $100 for everything and hoping some of it sales. I'm keeping most of this bundle though!!

Out the door this morning at 530am to drive an hour out to some place I've never heard of before. We had to choose between the old garage and the attached garage, most everyone chose the attached garage and I rolled the dice and went with the old garage. Managed to find all this in a three tier Matco box and get it piled into my bag.

Seriously? SO will replace bent small punches?

I should have bought them in that case. I saw them before Matt.

I'm still not seeing your point. I don't know exactly what I paid for it, since it was part of a negotiated bundle. But say it was $40. That's a good deal even used for a drill that's $200+ off the truck even after a discount. I just bought tools that I have a use for, and am not planning to re-sell.

I've already tried out this drill. It's super smooth. It looks hardly used. Except for the bent punches, none of this fellow's tools appear to have been abused.

Hit an estate sale local to me early this AM. I'm still new to these but man some of the folks are crazy. A fight broke out b/c of line cutting...just like some children.

I did find some neat old items and some NOS...30 bucs total for everything below.

I plan to head back tomorrow and scoop up an old Prentiss vise my offer was accepted on and dig through the 1/2 price leftovers.

Four Petersen vise grips with one NIB :rocker:

That's not my point, it's a hobby or "business" for you and others, fine, great, have at it. In my experience though, in my area most sales have ~20-40 year old hand tools that are often way behind in technology or condition yet the seller will often try and compare to modern pricing. If that guy can't see my issue of him comparing the old all bare metal air drill which he stated as equivalent to the modern $308 drill he quoted, then I am glad he is happy. Just like my older friction slide tool boxes. They work great for certain applications, but I am not foolish in thinking they are equivalent to modern kra/krl/etc boxes in features, performance or value.

As I've gotten a bit older, bit wiser and a bit richer, and tasted the quality and convinences of even off shore modern hand tools my opinion of used tools has greatly changed.

Just my 2cents

Dkroth: $.015 for scrap steel??????

Last week I got $.0325 per pound for 660 lb. I was disappointed with that and vowed to keep away from steel.

No sales for me this year but I'm enjoying watching everyone else.

Maybe I am lucky to live in a blue collar hotbed, but I have been getting decent money for old, worn out American made tools on Ebay. Enough, in fact, to pay for the tools I decide to keep. So I've been getting essentially free tools that may be old, but far from worn out.

You guys are finding some great stuff this early in the season.

Except for the one piddly little sale yesterday, no other sales listed this weekend. I ended up spending $140 on a new battery for my truck instead.
[mini-rant] I remember when car batteries were $40 and they lasted up to 10yrs. Now they cost three times as much and you're lucky if they last 4yrs. It's a PITA ! [mini-rant complete, carry on]

What kind of bags do you guys use for these sales? Ever had anyone hassle you for using one?

Most sale runners don't mind you bringing your own bags or boxes. Many encourage it. However there are some that don't allow it, they usually post it in the ad though.

I carry those thin fold-up shopping bags you can get at the grocery store or hardware store to avoid plastic bags. I keep one inside the other in case I need more than one bag and tuck it behind my back in my waistband to keep both hands free until I need it.

I've seen many show up with large canvas tote bags.
