Gees - a bloke goes on a road trip for 6 or 7 hours and all hell breaks loose in here. Just because CC wants to go fishing, and I had a photo taken in the bath (unrelated)....... :rocker: :eyecrazy: :dunno:

Lyndon

Checking in from the Central Western NSW at Narranderra. :rocker: :eyecrazy:

We just didn't want you to have a couple adult beverages and posting you in the tub in fishnets. LOL was just leave the fishnets to Cuda Chick.

I thought some of you guys might like to see this. It's a 62. I have to rebuild the transmission in it.

20160420_055903.jpg

One of my next projects will be getting these threaded insets anchored into the floor at the back and front of each bay.

20160420_062512.jpg

The allen screw will be used to keep dirt out of the threads.

20160420_062451.jpg

The eye hooks will screw in and allow me to hook up the winch

20160420_062610.jpg

This should make pulling in "dead" vehicles a lot easier. By having one at the front and rear of each bay will give me the ability to haul one in all by myself.

The eye bolts should work well Dan, particularly if you can operate the winch remotely (like, from the driver's seat).

I made a short stiff-bar for moving dead ones around at my old place - a trailer coupling at one end and a choice of various mounting holes and short bits of chain at the other end.
I could push or pull them as required - occasionally I'd have to get out and make a steering adjustment, but not too often.

What 'box does a '62 Caddy have - I would imagine that they would have something with more ratios than a PowerGlide?

DLC: are you sure those will hold when you put the eye bolt in them and try to pull about a ton of dead weight? if you are then I like the idea of the little screw to keep the debris out of the hole when not in use and so you don't have to trip over them.

one of the members just got a job with Hilti and showed off some of the insets Hilti makes that he is going to use for his huge vise stand. check them out in post #411 of this thread and let me (us) know what you think and if they might be a better option.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799&page=2

I've also seen members inset huge eye bolts in their new garage foundation and use them for straightening car and trailer frames. when not in use they have a cover sort of like this that you might want to do in your new addition.

I tried to find the thread and get you some good pictures of the bolts made into the foundation, but couldn't find it yet. maybe you've seen them or know what i'm talking about?

cheers

DLC: I found the floor mount I was talking about so here are some pictures. it's a bit of overkill for certain for a vise stand, but I bet you can straighten out a huge truck or car frame or pull a car in without any issues.

cheers

Thanks Drives. I am sure the 3/4" anchor insets will be able to handle what I'll need them to do. The link you attached looks like they are very similar. I'll be showing the set up and then a demo of it in use when I get the time to make it happen(soon I hope). I have to rent a core drill to get the holes drilled first. As always, I appreciate all the leg work you do for so many of us here on the Journal.

That pull looks like it would be killer for bending whatever it was hooked up to.

Mark, the Caddy I believe has a Hydramatic in it, but I need to verify that someone didn't swap it out with something else. Maybe tomorrow I'll have time to find out.

I believe the eye bolts will work very well. Up until now we either use my plow truck with a tire (tyre) between plow and rear bumper or pull them in with a garden tractor. The problem is most newer vehicles are all plastic in the front and back. I don't like pushing on them. I'd hate to have to replace someone's bumper cover because I broke it pushing on it. I'm sure the short bar you used worked very well. It's a great idea.

You should be fine, the dead weight is really rolling weight, so as long as the tires have air and are free to spin it won't take much to pull the car. If it was upside down, well that would be a bit of a different situation. I had to do something similar when I was a teenager to get my car into my Dad's shop, except it was up a steep incline and I had a come along.

The floor anchors are so useful.
I had some until a eye bolt bent and fractured when the "come a long" slipped and a 63 Impala moved suddenly towards the exit.
Then I used the attached sketch so that the force was in shear and spread over two bolts. You can also make 90 degree units to jack against.

Thanks Terrick. That's a very good idea.

Do you realize there is a problem with the link to your thread. Every time I click on it, it bumps me off the GJ. I have to go to your page and access it that way. Maybe it's just me, but yours is the only one it happens with.

dlcwent,
Hilti and other manufactures have " drop in" or "tamp in" anchors that have female bolt threads. You would have to check pull out values on them, but it would be nice to have the option to remove bolts we not needed so they not in the way.

Then you could say, never mind......

I just tried the link then Terrick and it worked - although I had to log in again on it (I don't normally have to do that when I'm on my tablet).

Of course, now that I know that you have a build thread, I will have to find some time to read it (it looks interesting, but I'll have to come back to it later).

Sorry Strouty, I wasn't ignoring you, I was just checking in Saturday afternoon. The wife worked and was pulling in the driveway when you were asking.

I am syked. I heard of an estate sale coming up this weekend and one of the things being offered is a dust collection system. Not that I need one, but if the price is right and it's a nice unit, it might just follow me home. It opens at 8:00 and I plan to be one of the first ones there. Who knows what else I might find.

Nothing like a good estate sale to look forward to. It brings the kid out in me.
I don't always buy a lot, I have as much fun just talking with the people running it and the other buyers.

Gidge and DLC: thanks for the KUDOS and not sure you can actually have TOO MANY drawers and i'll let you know if I ever get everything out of shopping bags, boxes and 5 gallon buckets. :D

DLC: bring a big truck when you stop by. :eyecrazy:

ALL: back to 50's and raining so summer weather was short lived but supposed to be 60's and sunny later this week when I start my backyard project on May 1st. hope you all have a great week

What do you think Drives, a box or tractor trailer? It might be worth the trip.

Richie, I got the plate in the mail today, Thanks. I'll get it up and post a picture as soon as I can.

Anyone else want to send me something for "The Wall of GJ Members"?

I'm still waiting for Cuda to find and send me the fishnets. I'll have to give her a shout out and remind her.

Garage related update next week.

ALL: your timing might be just right since i'm selling my 1978 ford flatbed that is 18 foot and a narrow cab so it can haul 20 foot plus long material. it runs on gas, but i'm guessing it might cost more to drive it home loaded with some of my COOL stuff than it would be to fly here. BTW i'm 5 minutes from the airport and a few tools for you handy guys to give the truck a check up before you hit the road. $2500 greenback and i'll hand you the title and the keys. and i'm sure i'll find something you'll like to haul home even though most of you might have more stuff than I do. there is a huge old Wells bandsaw that can be spiffed up because I think it was working, but I don't have 3 phase and there is a parts bandsaw both on the truck that ill let you have with the truck since they are sitting on it today.

cheers gentleman

Strouty & Taumac: it was worth the post about the truck just to see your posts and make me smile thinking of that trip back to Maine or Florida.

you're all welcome to come see my mess, but i'm still trying to Organize and I actually set up 4 of the 5 big oak blueprint cabinets today. one might have to go or I might find a spot for it.

cheers all and DLC thanks for hosting the thread for us to have some fun.
