Cody, I too give myself a budget for wandering around money and don't go over it, ever. I also have a deal with the wife that if either of us wants to spend over a certian amount on something ($100) we talkt to the other person. That way we aren't hiding anything from the other. And like Jake says, have a hard savings acount. I feed that before anything else in the month, including my sons college costs. You have to think through it and like Jake says, make sure that you really want something, or KNOW you can make money off of it.

Jake, if you are going the flipping route, something I have learned from doing it with books is the rule of 3. What ever you pay for something, you need to be able to sell it for 3X that amount, to cover your time, trans, handling and storage. It really helps make decisions when you use a rule like that. I also don't try to hold out for the last buck, as long as I can make that 3 I am good.

Good finds everyone, I will post up here in a bit.

OK, you got me curious.
What's an alternate use for a telescoping coffin dolly ?
and
What kind of crazy sales are you hanging out at ? :lol_hitti
Well obviously I won't be moving coffins. But it is a perfect size and maneuverability for handling sheet goods like plywood around my shop. It is a bit low but not unreasonably so.
The sale was a wholesale casket company. They had been bought out and were just clearing the warehouse. :dunno:

I've come to be very selective about what I buy. Rarely spend more than a buck or two for a tool, more for power tools of course. If prices are close to what I'm looking to spend I'll negotiate, but if they're too far off I'll just walk away. At this point I have a massive amount of tools, so I only buy stuff I either don't have, or would be a good upgrade over what I already have.

x2. If I find something at a good deal to upgrade, I'll do it, but must past that, I'm not buying much.

Btw guys i am going to probably be taking a few weeks break from going to sales and starting strong again next month. I have a huge problem right now going way over my budget. I don't have to pay a lot of bills right now but i need to start saving my money and not spending it all on tools. How do you guys do it? Do you guys set a limit and once you spend it your done for the week? I try to stay within my budget but i find so many cool tools i want and i can't help myself from getting them at such a good deal. I sometimes spend over $200 a week on tools and sometimes over $100 at just one sale. As you can see i don't try to buy junk anymore and try to stick to the stuff i collect such as usa craftsman, Diamond Duluth, challenger, proto, and usa made ratchets and breaker bars. But if i find something i like and at a good price i pick it up.
Once you have what you need, you can remedy your budget problem by selling the bargains you don't need. Example: I usually try to buy enough things I intend to resell to cover the money I spent at that sale. I keep track of each purchase on a spreadsheet, and log each sale to see when I've achieved >100% payback. Buying a rusty bead roller for $5 and selling it for $120 to someone in California made that percentage look really really good!

Oh yeah, and Jake's advice about long term savings is dead on. Pay your future self first, then spend your mad money on tool hoarding.

Ok, here are the smalls from this weeks hunt:

Cornwell 3/8 (found that Friday), Sandvik cutting tool, Starrett 268 V-block, Proto LA 3/8 long combo, Prot pebble driver and Bell System torque wrench!
And for the large:

Been looking for one of these for a while, and it dropped into my hands early at the flea today! Now I need to find the drive plug...

Well i saw a wrench lot posted on craigslist for $15 and thought that was a great deal. I saw all craftsman from the pics and when i got there i saw the craftsman when i looked it over but i guess i didn't look it over good enough. i picked out 6 usa craftsman wrenches and one usa husky and the other 35 were Chinese junk. I think he pulled one over on me! What was i thinking? Hopefully i can recoup my cost at my garage sale.

Nice finds BMW, I really like my Cornwell 3/8 ratchets, they get more use them my FL80. That's a really nice pebble Proto. I keep passing on a nice newer style Proto at the flea. Seller said he would take $35 for it, but I keep running out of money before I can pull the trigger.

PSYKO - nice sign for the garage, but don't let the wife hang it over your side of the bed.

Craptain - that's what I was thinking for using the dolly, but I never would have thought to go to a coffin sale in the first place.

Cody - we all take a hit from time to time. Sometimes sh.... errr .... "chinese" happens. :dunno:

It was only $15 so it wasn't that bad. I just don't need any more Chinese tools right now. I am hoping to get rid of most of my junk tools at my sale. I am trying to phase out 95% of my junk tools.

I'd have walked away myself.

Also, try to put together complete sets of cheap **** and list them or put them on your sale that way. That has worked best for me. Just build a set and zip tie it together. $10-15 a set and get them out of the shop!

I didn't look at them good enough that was the problem. If i would of saw how many Chinese wrenches there were i would of passed. I need to look over stuff a little more before I buy stuff especially when they are in lots.

I had to run around with my grandson today, ball practice and such. Just happened to see an auction going on along the way and made a quick stop . 93 degrees and the boy was hot so it didn't take long before I gave it up . But managed to pick up a B&C 8" curved adjustable and a Mule crossing sign... I joked to the wife it was going on her side of the bed! lol She can be a bit stubborn. She seen the humor in it but I don't have the nerve to hang it there :scared:!
Oh 3 bucks for both~

This was the kind of auction I like , low attendance ,tons of "stuff" and mostly dollars bids. I could have dropped a couple hundred there but decided to get the boy ice cream instead. There was a large amount of old buck, queen and case knives I really wanted to stay for along with file cabinets full of vintage tools but just wasn't in the cards today.

Did they have any coffins?you could place on the stand, make a flat top and use the inside for storage and roll it around. Sure would be an attention getter around the shop:lol_hitti

You guys are busy out there! I went to the Sunday flea market and did pretty well. I have another load of pickings to post yet too.

Got this all from one seller.I walked up and first looked in the cardboard box. It had some ugly hammers and the wrenches on the chair. I saw the 15/16 Snap On and asked how much. He said take all the tools for $25. I said I don't want the whole box, just the wrench. He said no, I mean ALL THE TOOLS, the ones behind you too.

I saw the Snap on ratchet and Williams ratchet and couldn't say yes fast enough!

Alot of junk but I would have paid $25 for the ratchets. He also had the Snap On Metric wrench set. He said $20 for the set so I almost ripped my pocket open once more.

I told him he must have got a good deal on these tools. He said just not my thing.

Worked out good for both of us though. He had 4 little kids at his booth and they were playing on a couple scooters. He helped me carry the tools to my car and saw a little razor scooter in my trunk that I garbage picked. He said what's up with scooter, we just bought a couple today. I said its yours man, and he was overjoyed. Lots of kids, lol.

CL deal today. Went to look at and bought almost on sight an Atlas 6" lathe for $350. It is mounted on a bench along with a 4 1/2" Reed. However he wants $400 for the vise and only$350 for the lathe. :dunno:
Lathe comes operational but needs a good cleaning. Plenty of tooling but no 4 jaw chuck just the 3. There is a tooth broken on one of the change wheels but they are available on eprey if I need it. No pics yet but I will post some after I pick it up later this week.

I dont post in this thread much but found some goodies this week end.
Picked up a pair of Snap Boxes cheap.
Top box KR-533D - Middle box KR-547B
Middle box seems to be elusive...

Also grabbed a TML 70A (6.5 " 1/4 ratchet) !

Not much luck their weekend, missed the auction, stopped at one sale with no tools, and ended up with this lot at the flea market today.

Was super happy with the OTC chain wrench, got it for $10, now I just need to find something to use it on....

Here is an aluminum beverage cart that I picked up at a garage sale for $15.00. He had $20.00, and I was looking it over he said make me an offer so he took fifteen. I've never seen one with a brake. I looked it up and it sells for $740.00 new. Other than some use, it's in pretty good shape. I've always liked the pneumatic tires, and it has a 600 lb rating so it should work nicely for me.

I was able to attend a estate auction Sat and ended up going back n Sunday as they only made it partway through the shop.
Only bought 1 lot on Sat. A bin of large drill bits.
2fad03e356c51c1bd7602b57241ebe50.jpg

Sunday was much better.
A Prentiss sliding jaw, a Chas Parker, Columbian wood vise I picked up for one of the Florida dudes and a unmarked quick set/release wood vise.
0f044d0a698f767f9a6bb4f52e36dc52.jpg

All I found so far on the quick set is a Google Image, anyone know what it is?

A couple of box lots and a wall lot. They just bid out a section of wall from post to post. The one lot had a Hanson hex extractor set that I was after, Greenlee punch set. Record three way c clamps, a stack of wrenches/ pipe wrenches.
7a6b66ae13a004fa107d4a54bcf84edc.jpg

This contraption was part of the wall that I bought.
It's a right angle speed reducer with a 1" drill Chuck , have no idea what it was used for.

Another neat item, a power punch press, the die appears to be seized but the rest is in great shape. It's a Royersford.

A little CM deal
72965962c25b36e4efd4099c5ddc819e.jpg

Bought more than I should, but had a fun time. The wife hung with me on Sat, which she usually don't get to come.

I made one stop at a tag sale while out on a long run. Had to ask the seller to hold if for me as I handed him my sweaty money (wasn't really sweaty. I had it in a ziplock bag). Got home an hour later, showered, and went back to pick up my treasures.
Box of drill bits
Two calipers from the Union Tool Company
Blackhawk 34947 3/8" Drive Bent Handle Flex Head Ratchet
Blackhawk 3/8" extention
Blackhawk 13/16" spark plug socket
Stahlwille 12mm socket
Durcrom metric wrenches
Proto 4700FM 1/4" socket set.

All for $11

I'm trying to figure out what should be in the Proto box. The only reference with info on 4700FM is another thread in this forum. Says it's 14 piece 1/4" set. I've got 13 pieces:
Ratchet
Spinner
T-bar
Long extention
short extension
universal
sockets 6-12

13mm missing? Could it only be a 14 piece set? Seems like an aweful lot of room in the box for just 14 pieces.

The quick release WW vise looks like a Sheldon, even though they normally have name on handle and in the center piece.

Another member, Evergreentree, bought one a week or so back, with same no name markings other than the cast markings yours displays.
