1/2: with you taking up your entire carport with gramps or great gramps wagon for years and now taking up your new garage space with it I'm sure you have a great conversation with him enough so i vote for the naked finish. try BLO (boiled linseed oil) and take a look at one of our 18 year old member's (Vintage Nut) old English blacksmith vise on the main vise thread he's been working on. his weighs north of 150 pounds i think and he has a mixture of other ingredients besides BLO so i'm positive he'd enjoy a PM from 1/2 asking for the mixture.

keep up the great progress on the WEST WING and you don't seem to ever tire or be upset at anything that comes up over there and wish you could bottle some of that spirit up and send me (us) some.

cheers

Nice looking naked finish on that vise!

Thank you Sub, I must say I do have a fetish for nice shiny metal..

drives thank you as well.

My grandfathers vise could certainly tell a tale or two. I do use BLO on some of my bare steel benches and the naked vise it does keep them nice.

I will check the thread out for sure..

Things are going well in the West Wing both of us have enjoyed the journey. It certainly has not been smooth sailing all the way and has thrown up some curve balls along the way let me tell you.

I do get tired, frustrated and p%&*ed off as most of us do but I find that its no good to getting upset about things as it burns a heap of energy that is totally unnecessary and merely look at it as another challenge.

Thank you both for the visit and have a great day..

My $.02 on the vise subject. In my barn, everything has the heavily used look (because it is). In your place, everything I've seen looks nicely done, fresh and new. I say a restore is in order. It would look out of place any other way.

xtremek, my grand fathers vise does need a clean up at the very least, then I will put it on display with his other smithing tools that I have.

I think I will look for a third one for the naked finish that I can use in the shed, not that I need another vice mind you as there are 4 others in there now on various benches that I use.

Thank you for your visit and as always have a great day.

PS: Quality Shed Time for me today apart from the odd trip into next door to see how my grouting job is going.

Andrew has been and taken a trailer load of old carpet from the West Wing to the waste station and I have been checking all the ring gaps in the new liners on the Rover K Series build which have all come up to spec not like the previous set of new liners.:)

The pistons have all been fitted to the rods now so we are making some progress finally.

Rings assembled in their respective homes.

Ring land clearances - done.

Piston to bore - done.

Wrist pins clearances - done.

Bore measure - done.

Final piston to rod assembly - done.

Wrist pin circlips assembled and checked ( twice ).

View media item 62371
And the Quality Assurance sheet ( 1 of 10 ) for the build - done.

All the crank clearance check components such as the bare head core and the new ( old ) liners have been removed in readiness for the final assembly over the next week if I get 5.

Tools cleaned and back where they belong.

The naked vice looks great, looking forward to seeing what you do with the leg vice. Loving watching the engine rebuild too, so methodical.

Thank you hewey, the bare metal finish really appeals to me, it is really easy to keep it that way with a wipe of boiled linseed oil or a squirt of CRC every so often. I am on the lookout for a third leg vise to do exactly that now. They are 10 times the price on EBAY ( $4-500 ) of what I paid for the rusty one from my neighbour.

I am pleased with how the Rover K series is coming together an engine of this type is fairly unique in respect to its construction so it has been a learning curve for me. Like any engine build you do have to do it very methodically in your approach, chunk it down into small sub processes and tick the boxes all the way.

Nice work 1/2 cup, I'm jealous of your engine building progress, what tool are you using to measure the bores?

matty, the build is ticking along nicely, probably not as fast as Andrew would like. He helped out yesterday which was great as I am sure he is gaining heaps of experience ( as I am too ) with what to look for and how to go about things.

I am using internal and external metric micrometers that I borrow from work to do some stuff as well as my own Mitutoyo digital calipers and a new set of feeler gauges to do the measuring thing. I do like to cross check what ever I measure with another just to be sure.

Really like your work and especially the checklist.

But I'm having a hard time grasping the "benches clean" thingy. What exactly is that? Did you buy new benches?:lol_hitti

Andy, thank you..

My check lists are a must on a build such as this as there is no room for error and I am not second guessing things. It also provides a bench mark to work with down the track.

Clean benches:lol_hitti

I apologise in advance if I offend any one on the forum but unashamedly I have to admit to being a clean bench type person.:lol_hitti

Thank you one and all for your visit today and have a good one..

Nice work and looking good :)

I wish I was a clean bench type person. I'd get stuff done so much quicker, but it's just flat-out not in my nature...

Is that a yoga mat I see? I use them for toolbox drawer liners...

Coop, yep its similar to yoga matting, Super Cheap Auto sell it as drawer liners and these were left overs from my bench and under bench drawers that I did recently. I have found that they are just ideal for this type of work.

BiTurbo believe me you should try it for a bit.

Call it my OCD but I find a clean bench and floor makes a world of difference. The Shed Downunder still has some ugly areas that I will deal with in time, thanks to the GJ I have found some great ideas and inspiration that has made me get off my **** and do something about it.

Than you one and all for dropping by, have a great day..

Still trying to catch up Steve. Thanks for taking the wheel while I was away. You have my permission to step in anytime.

The naked vise looks great, but I don't think that look will last long. Rust and oil from ones hands quickly deteriorate that pure look. I'm thinking you'll put some type of finish on it. :dunno:

I did not see any markings on the post vise. I was hoping to see something there that would indicate it being a rare one. Not that it means it isn't. It sounds like you've got a lot done on the west wing.

As I said, I've got a lot of catching up to do for only being away for a few days. You guys never sit still.:shocking::beer:

Dan, the pleasure is all mine, not that I did anything to be honest.;)

My naked ( pimped ) vise actually look better now, that is an old pic, cleaning over time has really brought it to life. I just wipe it over with BLO or the occasional spray of CRC and its done. I am not considering doing anything more to it at that..

Thanks for reminding me , I must check both the leg vises for markings. I clean forgot about it.:headscrat

Mrs 1/2 Cup should be finished all the walls and ceilings today just leaving some touchup work to do on the architraves and skirting boards to do.
I have to finish the toilet suite tonight so that's another thing off the list.

We are really stating to see the light at the end of the tunnel now, for the insides at least.

Carpets and curtains next week from what Mrs 1/2 Cup tells me. She is also looking at an evaporative air conditioner as well to integrate that into the existing ducting and some new faucet hardware bless her, not that there is any thing wrong with what is there.:dunno:

Always lots to do and thanks for the visit...

You're right there about an organised space. I find if the workbench, desk in my study, or my desk at work aren't organised and tidy I can't think straight, and I make mistakes, which pisses me off even more..... :eyecrazy: :scared: :lol_hitti

All of the above is ideal.

But if you are writing entries at your desk, then you have a good job, or a smartphone with decent reception :D

A good job in a quiet corner of a big office, but separate from every one else..... (I wish there was a "Shhhhh" emoticon). Nobody else can do what I do so they think my output is prodigious...... :willy_nil

No, don't use the smart phone for this. Doesn't work for me.

Lyndon, it just such a great feeling to have well let me put it this way "a mostly organised space" anyway. I recently had a visitor to the Shed Downunder comment "don't you do any work in here there is no mess and tools everywhere"

I let that go to the keeper and just smiled in reply.:D

All,

Its been a busy couple of weeks at work and I have done a fair bit of travelling around the state, meetings to decide when the next meeting is and more emails than I have time to read.:eyecrazy:

PS I did however get the opportunity to call in to the Yarra Glenn Bake House and savour their chunky beef and gravy pies the other morning for smoko..

http://www.travelvictoria.com.au/yarraglen/

Then Grays Bakery in Kerang for lunch earlier in the week on the way to Swan Hill.

http://www.travelvictoria.com.au/regions/murray/

http://www.graysbakery.com.au/Home.htm

I am looking forward to the weekend ahead.:3gears:

The to do list looks like this and is Subject to change without notice..;)

. Mrs 1/2 Cup is away Saturday so I may slip in some uninterrupted Quality Shed Time and work on the Rover K Series for a bit.

. Andrew has his last outing in the MG F on Sunday down at Sandown Motor Raceway so then it is game on to get the new engine ready as the old one comes out over the next week.

http://www.sandown.net.au/motorsport.html

. Lawns X two, I will get a head start on them tonight and that's if it hasn't rained today so that they do not eat into my weekend to much.

. Mrs 1/2 Cup has finished the painting in the West Wing apart from a few touchups

. I have a few things to finish off in the West Wing to get ready for the new carpets to be installed.

. Then there is the non negotiables as per usual..

Looking forward to a great weekend and as always a big thank you for your visit..

It sounds strange when you talk of mowing the lawns while it is winter where you are. Here we generally mow between the end of April and the last of September. Then it's time for raking leaves (or not in my case) and getting ready for the cold months that will follow.

 For having the lawns done and it's only Friday night.

Dan, It is amazing how much my lawns have grown over the winter:dunno: Normally they are fairly dormant but I am guessing its all the sub soil moisture we have now with the recent rains.

I have to admit its a nice feeling to get the lawns all out of the way now, the gardens are looking not too bad. We are starting to see some early spring blossoms out now and the country looks great even though itsa bit chilly in the mornings still..

Have a great week end and thanks for stopping by..

It's funny that you (even for me) are mowing now. I don't mow my "Sir Walter" buffalo lawn from May till September..... It does get some weeds in it, but I pretend to ignore them until early September when I hit it all with weed killer, then a week later with fertiliser. Then I start to mow again......

Even with the rain's the stuff doesn't grow.... :headscrat :dunno: :willy_nil

Lyndon, No Sir Walter Buffalo with in cooee of here.

The truth is our lawns are what I call "Cultured Weeds" and are a mix of every grass and weed variety known to man. I have long given up trying for the perfect weed free lawn and just over sown with Hortico Tough and Hardy seed.

http://www.hortico.com.au/products/lawn/hortico-tough-drought-hardy-lawn-seed/

I have found it not too bad actually.

I been mowing every couple of weeks over winter.

Enjoy your week end..:thumbup::thumbup:

Is this for your son's car? Either way, a QA sheet on a home build is an appropriately impressive detail :). If you have any issues down the line, that doc will be very useful.

Dennis, yes this engine is for my eldest sons MG F and thank you.

The QA is a must and is also a bit of a sanity check to ensure every thing is as it should be. The one thing we both don't need is to build a hand grenade given his investment in parts, blood sweat and tears.

Thank you once again for your visit and have a great weekend..

The week end that was.

To be honest I could have done with another couple of days this weekend, two days is never enough.:willy_nil

Friday evening the lawns were given a quick hair cut both here and in the West Wing.

Saturday was one of those days where you have stuff planned and it just didn't work out but what the heck, i just went with the flow anyway.

Mrs 1/2 Cup left at 5 am for a show at Carrum that is a three hour drive from here near Melbourne for the day.

Andrew called early on his way to Sandown Motor Raceway for the weekend.

The West Wing, I was able to finish two doors, one that was so grossly miss aligned it wouldn't latch and the other was binding on the door jambs so a quick prune with the Makita planner sorted that out now Mrs 1/2 Cup will be able to finish painting her last door.
I fitted an adjusted the last of the robe doors Mrs 1/2 Cup had removed for cleaning.

A work colleague of mine and familly dropped by to see how we were getting on in the West Wing which was great to share what we were up to as they are renovating their home at the same time. We spent a couple of hours comparing notes which was fantastic.

A quick trip to Super Cheap Auto to pick up oil, filter and sump plug to do the service on the Mazda Six for Leonie ( widow of Ian, my boss that passed away earlier this year ) she arrived early afternoon and what would normally take and hour or so turned into three and a half hours as she was in for a chat and catch up.

Sunday, was mainly concentrated on the West Wing.

A trip to the big box store first up to pick up those essential bits and pieces. ( i can never go there without coming home with more stuff than i intended in the first place, so I have a new Stanley Fat Max Wood chisel set now:thumbup:. )

. The toilet suite finally done and dusted. Yet to be christened.
. Installed a mixer tap to the kitchen sink that Mrs 1/2 Cup had brought during the week to replace the tap and outlet set up. That necessitated yet another trip to the big box store as the flexible tails were not long enough to reach the wall outlets under the sink.
. I also managed a little more cleaning up in the garden as well.

Dad dropped by to see how things were going and was in for a chat as usual.

Then Andrew turned up following his outing with the MG F down at Sandown, the car ran very well with his times fairly consistent to his PB on that track of around 1 min 34 secs.

In discussion we have made the decision to do the last two meetings of the season with the existing engine which takes the pressure off getting the new engine done some what. Not forgetting that Amy is due to give birth in the first week of November..

As usual, thank you one and all for the visit and have a great day..

Glad to see you have the engine build schedule modification.

Big Box = Bunnings ?

HOTFR8, spot on, we don't have a Masters here.

Sounds like a great weekend.

Andy, A top weekend and the weather was fantastic to cap it off.
Running the old engine for the last two events makes a heap of sense, plus it takes the pressure off me for a bit.

With our big box stores you can buy most things at including things in little boxes.;)

Thanks guys for your visit and have a great day...

Never been in a Masters store. Bunnings I prefer to call it the Big boys Toy Store.

HOTFR8, you are right there...

That said watch the pricing on things for example I was looking at some 50mm tube stops and they were 30 % cheaper at Mitre 10 for the exact same thing in the exact same packet.

Regards and have a good one..

Nice work this weekend :)

I know what you mean about the weekends being one day too short!

Well try this retired thing. They not only take away your paycheck, they also confiscate weekends and holidays. Now I'm on the dole like seemingly the majority so I have no excuse to not get things done. Working six days per week is killing me :willy_nil
