To quickly answer -
No - the box wasn't $5
Yes - I paid more
No - it's not as good as Outlaws $5 pick
No - there is no reason to dislike or be jealous
No - it wasn't too mean
:lol_hitti

Every time I try to do a detailed inventory, life keeps getting in the way. So here are the highlights.

Sear's multi meter (early 70's??) still works
8pc Vandium Tool Co. Combo wrenches (the reason I grabbed the box)
Cman RHFT 3/8dr ratchet (marked with patent number)
5 lg. Camper's "safety pins "
Cman push button tape measure
S-K #40622 3/8dr universal socket
Dunlap hex drive socket kit
various Craftsman 3/8dr =V= and -V- sockets and other tools

They wanted $45 for the box. The guy doing the pricing seemed to think that the multi meter was a big ticket item (it's a $2 item at best), but didn't think much of the Vandium wrenches, which I was really after (don't know why, just had to have them). I was only able to talk him down to $35 for the lot. I was trying for $20, but he wouldn't bite.

In the end, I was in a rush as well as jonesing for a hit after my self imposed restrictions, so I ponied up the money. I didn't overpay, but not my usual score. :dunno:

Good stuff, I would definitely have grabbed it also. If only for the RHFT (a 3/8 still eludes me) and the tape measure (Can't pass up a vintage one in good condition). I like the box too, that would work well in the house or in my office.

Maybe the irony is that ice picks are a favored tool for sabotaging tires, and ice picks are associated with cocktails, which can also have an adverse effect on controlling an automobile?

Picked up a few items for a few bucks this morning at the flea. This short breaker-bar / Tee-handle (two dimples on the shaft allow two positions) has no information stamped anywhere. Anyone know the manufacturer? My first guess is Duro/Indestro, just because they produced so many things with no branding, and definitely produced a lot of hex-drive sockets.

IMO, I'd be looking for faint stamping somewhere on that breaker. Maybe Blackhawk or MTF, certainly "Milwaukee style."

I answered a CL ad for "Craftsman box with tools" and the only picture was this:

00t0t_80glH1iarsB_1200x900.jpg

His price was $100.

I've only taken pictures of the bottom box so far.

What I got was:

- Complete Craftsman 1/4" drive set (with RHFT ratchet) in original plastic box (crown-top logo)
- Complete Craftsman 3/8" drive set (with RHFT ratchet)
- Craftsman =VV= long shank DBE wrench set (including 19/32 x 25/32)
- Craftsman -V- DBE wrench set (short)
- Craftsman =V= DOE wrench set
- Craftsman crown-top ratcheting DBE wrench set
- Craftsman punch set (looks 1960s) - some items have never been used
- Craftsman die set in original plastic crown-top box
- Craftsman SAE hex wrench set in original plastic crown-top pouch
- P&C open-gear 1/2" drive ratchet
- Duro wheel hub puller
- Thorsen USA Combination wrench set
- US made drill index from 1/16" to 1/2" USA made drill bits
- Bondhus metric hex wrench set

- Kennedy machinist tool box
-Craftsman Heritage-era rolling tool box

Lots of other misc tools that I can't recall.

I didn't hesitate to hand him his asking price of $100

The Craftsman heritage top box in the second picture came from a CL purchase a few weeks ago. Paid $75 (full of tools as well)

Thanks for the suggestions. I took a real close look, but see nothing but random dings.
One detail may not show well in my pics: the knurled grip is a separate piece like a blind sleeve that's pinned to the smaller-diameter shaft. You can see where there's a circumscribed line to mark the depth where the pin goes. The Blackhawk grips I was able to view online seem to be solid with the shaft.
I also think the hex-head screw that's on it now is not original. It's longer than it needs to be, doesn't mate with the dimples particularly well, and doesn't have a very satisfying grip or look to it. I wonder if the original knob might have had some branding mark.

Aw, Dang! It's a very close match to the 1920s "Quickway" set Bonney supposedly made for Bethlehem Spark Plug Co. But like most of the the sockets I've tentatively IDed as BSPC, not a trace of copper plating. I wonder if they dropped the copper plating to lower production costs at some point.
I don't see a pin in the Alloy Artifacts image. Maybe it was a repair or mod (if it slipped off, or if it spun on the shaft and the owner didnt like that), rather than a manufacturing method.

Been slim pickings around here for a while, finally found a few goodies this weekend. First pic - 20 1" X 21" (I think, was hoping 18", they're longer) sanding belts, dispenser of Xacto blades, chain hook, sliding tee bolt, drill chuck and mismatched key and the file set me back $5. Another stop, Craftsmen made in USA rounded nut extractors and sanding belt, another $5. Couple more stops, set of Snap On metric sockets in a tray 10-19MM with a token 7/16" Craftsmen, a strange pair of P&C pliers, and a Mac wrench.

I also have a BSPC set with a ratchet (exact same design) that has a Herbrand forge mark. Most are Bonney but others made that set too.

Hey Sam, can we get some closeups of that rat? Any stamps?

Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk

I picked up the same ratchet a few weeks ago for $1. The head looks similar to the Craftsman flying V ratchet but that's where the similarities stop. Here's a close-up of mine.

I wonder if the "V" selector on those Japanese rats would fit in a real Craftsman rat? IT might be good for restoring an old Cman rat which was repaired and rebuilt with one of those undesirable plastic selectors sometime in its life.

Just a curiosity.

Picked up some decent sized c clamps earlier today. Mix of Wilton, Armstrong and Jorgensen mostly.

$50.00 for the lot.

Ok, technically you meet the criteria (price and picture), but you won't get a YS from me until we hear the story behind all those free goodies.

Neighbor a few houses down was cleaning out his garage and we were walking by with the dogs and he asked if I wanted anything he had out front, it was all garbage. So I said you got any tools, not thinking he would since he does not work on anything himself, but he came out with a box full of this stuff and said he got it at an auction in this same box years ago and never even touched it.

Brorex, 454 got a pair of those compound pliers in P&C a couple of days ago.

Both of you - fun test: get some 1/2 ply or pine and try squeezing with std 6" or 8" pliers. Hard as you can. then try near the same spot with the compounds. The difference is amazing!

Went to a "freesale" this morning. Somethings were free and the rest was cheap. For $8 I picked all this. The power nailer came with about a half box ofnnails and cartridges and a full box of green cartridges. Set of drum sanders and an unused gallon of phosphoric acid. Then the rifle rest. I don't think I overpaid.

Picked up this stuff about 3 weeks ago from habitat but I have been busy painting my house/house projects so they have been sitting on my bench waiting to be photographed before being put away. Scored old files, nos craftsman drill bits which i needed and also scored more plvmb/ p&c :rocker:. All told I think it was about $6.

Nice score! Out of curiosity, which ReStore location are you visiting? I'm curious if we are competing at the same store(s).

-----------------------------------------

I brought home two items last night.

The first is from a CL ad - a Craftsman 3D tool chest dated December, 1970. $20

After buying the tool chest, I drove to ReStore and bought this wall hanging tool cabinet for $2 (half price day). It looks a lot like the Craftsman cabinet, but has no identifying marks except the scant remains of a decal on the front door. Does anyone recognize it?

It was a great day!

Brian

Picked this up at a yard sale last weekend for $15. Don't need a creeper but for the condition and price it had to come home with me.

Found a similar Herbrand Tools creeper at a sale a few months back. Should have bought it but I only had the one 20$ bill left in my pockets. Turned out I didn't find anything else the rest of the day and when I got back there they had closed up.
