Why would they give someone a hard time over 20 in points
Why would they not? General rule seems to be you can get around one customer service adjustment per year, provided your net spend is positive (Sears tracks spending and profit by customer, if they are making money on you they are more interested in helping you). Beyond that they will usually cite the T&C and explain why you did not earn the points.
They don't say anywhere that you will earn the points, just that you could. As a result, they can say you did not earn them and you have no real recourse.
