Why would they give someone a hard time over 20 in points

Why would they not? General rule seems to be you can get around one customer service adjustment per year, provided your net spend is positive (Sears tracks spending and profit by customer, if they are making money on you they are more interested in helping you). Beyond that they will usually cite the T&C and explain why you did not earn the points.

They don't say anywhere that you will earn the points, just that you could. As a result, they can say you did not earn them and you have no real recourse.

This is the email that I got from them

That email explains the likely issue - the items you bought were not on the "select" list - it's not ALL tools, just certain ones.. The ad and offer will show on tools where it is not eligible to earn points, you would need to look at the points detail in the cart to confirm a particular item is eligible.

It specifically says right below the price "members receive 50% in points"

I don't think that's true. I've had a few adjustments because I've done returns and wanted my coupon back(After some back and forth they gave me $20 in points). Just a few days ago they adjusted for $4.50 points expiring without my knowledge because the site claimed only $0.40 were expiring. I normally spend at most 10% of the total cost out of pocket.

They may track amount of orders but I don't think they have a quick way to check points used. Either that or they don't care. The most recent adjustment I sent an email stating the situation, after several days they adjusted with the usual "One time courtesy" line.

Any good, useful tools on sale for around $30-50? I've got a $10 coupon off $30 or more expiring today and about $15 in points to throw in with it.

Shopyourway.com is great for this because their filters work well and you don't have to click through categories like on Sears.com. Tools becomes one big searchable dept. I do the following to maximize these coupons. Go to the tools department, then products tab, select sellers sears and or kmart, select redeem points filter, select a sales filter (i do 50% or more), then do a price range filter up to a few bucks over the coupon value. If you find something that's a buck or even penny short of the coupon, craftsman carpenter pencils, small clamp, and 4-in-1 screwdriver keychains are all a buck. Wishlists help prepare for these coupons as well.

Um, OK, that's just the pattern a few hundred people have observed and deduced on a couple of other forums. Could be exceptions, just that it seems to be the norm.

It is known and confirmed by SYWR that they track spending, profit, point usage, and coupons. The CSRs see a summary screen with net statistics when they access your account, but they can get details on any purchase you have ever made at Sears, Kmart, and partners.

A new Sears store?

Yes, a new full line Sears store.

Contrary to media fluff, Sears is not really declining, they are more refocusing on profitable areas and product lines. Sales are growing in many areas in the Midwest, so they are adding stores to better meet demand in under served areas.

I'm sorry I ruffled your feathers but I'm just telling you I've had several adjustments this year and I spend virtually nothing out of pocket. I must get special treatment in this case. :dunno:

If you haven't found anything yet, I picked up this to fill in some gaps in my tool set. Right at $29.99 and 70% off. Tacked on the $1 4-in-1 screwdriver keychain (USA made!) to trigger the deal. Got 50% back in bonus points on it too....

OK, I got it too. and the key chain too.
Had $10.00 off $30.00 Surprise points, was running out the 29th.
and I only had 13 cents, or a penny regular I thought, kept sending e mails the other day, saying I won 100 points on that spin/scratch off game thing,
But IDK, I ended up with 3.30 regular points, running out June 9th.
So I got the key chain, and extension set for $18.95 with Tax.
Not bad.
Reviews say it's pretty good, albeit China.
One of The Q/A said he didn't like the finish.

Is that set really $100.00 regular price?
Don't seem like it should have cost that much. We got a good deal if that's the case though.

No ruffled feathers, just explaining the source of information. Given that these conclusions are based on observation and experience, it's not unexpected that there would be exceptions. They could have also adjusted their practices, or for some reason see you as a more valuable customer.

It was much worse during the times of the purges, so maybe they are relaxing a bit now that they have purged the worst offenders.

That's the part I think you may be missing - the banner showing on that page does NOT mean it is a select tool, it's just an advertising banner. It will show on tools that are not included in that offer.

Notice on the side under the price it say you will earn 182 points - NOT 50%. That is perhaps the simplest way to see that this is not a "select tool".

Any chance you work for at Sears public relation?

I do not wish any harm for Sears. God know I take a lot of advantage of their sale, but ^ , this really make my day!

EDIT - lets talk again in 12 months or sooner, if this thread is still alive - I mean if Sears is still alive.

While it kind of does sound like he is in PR. He is right about Sears dumping under performing stores, and refocusing on the profitable lines it sells, which is logical. Sears actually turned a profit last quarter and their stock responded last week. Still I do hope it was not my bank financing that new store.

That first quarter profit was the result of the upfront $525 million payment from SBD for Craftsman. Their loss without that would have been worse than the quarter before.

I stand corrected, you are absolutely right. I don't know why Forbes didn't mention those facts in their article.

Just stopped by my local sears. The cashier showed me a printed page with 2 discounts on it. 10% off on sale and clearance tools, 40% off on regular price for active/retired military. Assuming Monday will be last day for this, and may vary store to store as this wasn't an advertisement flyer.

No, just a customer, but I READ the reports and do my own research rather than relying on the misinformed media who are spinning reports.

Little chance of them failing in the next five years or so, let's make the check-in an annual event. Memorial day next year?

What in Sears' financial reports gives you hope of its survival?

You mentioned that Sears recently opened a new store near you. Can you tell us what town or city this is in? They've closed over a hundred stores this year.

The 10K. Have you read it? As others have noted, they are posting profits, but more significantly, cash flow. Many companies prosper for years posting losses, provided they can maintain cash flow. Don't let accounting practices intended to legally reduce tax liability with a true loss or floundering company.

Well aware they have closed underperforming stores while opening new ones in more profitable areas. Great example of the media effort to "spin" the story - they report on the closing stores but not one word about the many new stores they are opening. It's really just typical retail business, any chain opens and closes stores each year.

Nice attempt to spin yourself without actually answering his question. Can you actually name two new locations they have opened this year? I know of all of the Sears stores within probably 300 miles of me (and have visited most of them), and while some in pretty upscale populated areas have closed, not one has been opened.

Sears has been slowly strangling since the late 70's.

When you see them getting rid of Craftsman, you know they're circling the drain.

They failed to respond to change, and they thought they had a sewn up market that would be that way forever.

Kinda like Colt...

And Circuit City. Midas was heading that way too. Management saw the writing on the wall in time to quit being the muffler guys and got into general auto repair.
