Yes the older ones had more rows of suction cups on the handles and did not say snap on.

Usually if you find something different about a ratchet, it has to do with Canada.

this "SNAPMOM" person first leaves a bogus comment and neutral feedback which was removed by ebay. THEN she leaves a negative on another item, will will soon also be removed. the negative was on a $1.25 socket, which was missing from inventory so the order was cancelled. this stellar individual, in an obvious retaliation to me getting the first feedback removed, went ahead and destroyed my 100% rating and left an unwarranted negative. she also "deals" snapon, and likely figured she would hurt her competition in the process.

just thought you guys would appreciate knowing what this person is really like.

This is totally inappropriate. I hope the moderation takes care of it quickly! Snapmom sent me a sliding Tee for my Snap-on Ferret set and refused payment for it. Please keep your eBay quibbles on eBay where they belong!

What kind of an idiot thinks it's a good idea to infiltrate a website under the guise of a petty slanderous alias to make accusations about one of the site's most beloved participants that also imply that all the rest of us are dupes, fools, and bad judges of character? HAHAHA! Suicide Mission Accomplished!

I would leave a message of testimony for anyone who has not yet had the opportunity to experience snapmom's integrity, generosity, and esprit de corps, but there isn't anyone who fits that description here!

Go back to the dark underside of ePrey negative hell where you doubtlessly belong.

Remember to be appreciative that someone wants this old junk!

Sell to Snapmom here and avoid that atrocious seller fee. Let’s see, 9% of $1.25...:lol_hitti

Looks like eBay seller "diversifiedgoods" has exited or been exited from GJ. Like others above, I will not buy anything from that seller; his/her slanderous statements and stalking behavior here are inexcusable.

So I reckon I’ll play along here.
This was my Grandpa’s tool box in WW2, so I am told by my family. The tool kit went to another family member. I have stored this box for the past 10 years inside my closet.
I have wanted to repaint it white and put it in use, however, I have been told that it would be wiser to leave it alone. Any advice to keep the bottom from rusting out completely would be welcomed.
Also anyone have specifically the year manufactured?

Ok, so apparently I’ve made it abundantly clear I don’t know wtf I am doing. I have tried to put 7 pics into one post from my mobile phone and for whatever reason it only shows one or 2. So here are some more pics hopefully

Sweet! Snap-on called them MechaniKits. Yours looks like a K-25. The K-24 was smaller, 20" x 7-3/4" x 5-1/2", and had two (2) hinges. The K-25 was bigger, 21-1/4" x 8-3/4" x 7-1/8", and had three (3) hinges. Both of them had leather handles. They were gray before the war, gray and sometimes OD green during the war.

Is the back of that padlock marked? And do you still have the key? That is military issue, and if it was original to the box, probably also wartime.

Yes sir I do have the key. I always leave the lock on the box 'fraid I would lose it. The lock says Made in Corbin Lock Comp. New Britain, CT USA
I want to eventually paint it white with a pearl finish and put in the truck.
Thank you for your information.

Yup. Wartime.

My colleagues will think I've gone soft, but it's your grandpop's box, and anything you as his grandson decide to do with it in the spirit of honoring his memory and service is a good thing, including a spiffy pearl white finish in the back of a truck. The leather handle will really pop against that finish. (And if you want to replace that, the best source is a handle in better condition salvaged from an old suitcase from the same era, found at a flea market or an estate sale.) Plenty of them have been trashed over the years or painted bright red etc, and enough of them have been saved and preserved "as is" where it's not a sacrilege to erase its history. Allow me to add if only for my own good conscience that it would look great "as is", too, in the back of your truck, with the bottom de-rusted, and then the whole box coated in BLO. It will probably get more attention that way, too, especially from the oldtimers. But again, I like your idea, and please come back and show pics when you're done.

EDIT: As long as you're not going for the original/preserved look, if you're going to go pearl white, I'd paint the "Snap/on" logo black or red. That would look awesome!

It was very likely made by Duplex Mfg Co in Sherman, NY, by the way. I believe they made these and the cantilevered boxes, which Snap-on called HandiKits.

Wow. What a story of history. I have thought about painting it for awhile now. And I sure will show the pictures when I go to do it. I will probably make a thread just for that box. It means the world to me. My Gramps is gone, and my father is on his way out too. As my father says, "no one gets out alive", so true. I really appreciate your knowledge, and the time you took to answer. I have been lurking for about 2 years now and today decided to actually join up. Thanks again.

HandiKits, for sure, because the patent number is stamped on them. But what evidence for MechaniKits? Aside from “Made in USA” stamped on the back, the only marks I see are on the closures, stamped “Eagle Lock Co Terryville Conn.” Admittedly, these could have been purchased by Duplex and attached to the box, but that seems a more complex explanation.

Up a Creek, any stamped marks on your box?

Yes, although not too sure if these pics will come out here now but I’ll give it a shot.

I didn't mean to imply there was any doubt about Duplex as the OEM on the cantilevered boxes. As for the other boxes, I can't seem to find my notes, LS. Maybe it was just a theory because they were related on the same page in the catalog with similar sounding names, but I could've sworn there was a construction similarity. I could be wrong.

Yeah! I did find a free download of a 1927 padlocks catalog. At the end it lists other categories of products not shown, so maybe they made boxes. It mentions post office boxes, and specialty hardware, so I don’t think this resolves the question. They very well could have just supplied the hasps to the box fabricator - whoever that might be, including DuPlex. I’ll keep looking.

Thank you for that information. I am trying my best to look as well. It is amazing to see that there were so many companies involved in the making of these style of boxes.

Beautiful box up a creek and I am glad you are preserving it. Private Lugnuts, so you mentioned that the box was made by Duplex of N.Y for Snap On. Does this mean that Snap On did not make their own boxes? Have they ever made their own boxes? Thanks

I don't know, Glen. I am not an authority on Snap-on boxes, in general, and especially not the larger boxes (rollers, top boxes, etc), or anything made after 1940's. My pseudo-informed hunch would be no. But that is just a hunch. I do know that most tool mfgrs outsourced their boxes.

Thank you for the kind words. When the time comes for restoration, I will make a thread on the process and progression.
For now, I am trying to figure out as much as I can about the origin of this box.

Unsure what vintage is, the boxes are from the 70's or 80's and some of the tools are older and or newer.

Boxes are being refinished now...
