Wow, Eddie has been trying to sell all 3 'KCD' brands for years, I thought it was hopeless at this point for anyone wanting the other two. AAP got Diehard at a huge discount, though - this article from close to 3 years ago had stated the value at about a billion apiece ($3b total) for Kenmore, Craftsman, and Diehard. Sears indeed got around $1b for Craftsman.

Hell yeah... everyone know that Sears is dying. Just wait it out, and scoop things at the last minute for rock bottom price. Don't we do this too, but just in smaller scale? I have bought some great deals when I find stores that are closing :bounce:

Where sears/Kmart is concerned, I have yet to see a good deal at a closing store. When My local store closed I went and there were a few good deals at the last hour of the last day, and then only for things they couldn’t get rid of and fixtures. As I recall they had some of the extreme line of tools left and they were the least desireable ones. They also had a few of those grill gazebos they used to sell that were pretty cheap. I went in a few times during the two months or so it was closing and even during the last week most items were cheaper at open stores than at the closing store even given The so called markdown.

Best time to buy is if it’s an item their discontinuing or the vendor has cut them off.

Example, gladiator work bench $85 when they dropped the line!!! Vs $180 at a closing store for one that was left over.

Only reason to go in a closing sears or Kmart is for fixtures or stuff from the back room/signage that u might want.

I agree since Sears regularly sells everything for 50% off the msrp which they never have anything priced at there isn’t anything approaching regular price for weeks when it’s mostly gone. With the SYW discounts you’d have to be nearly 75% off to start to see deals.

If the extreme lime of tools refers to those ultimate collection tool sets like the ones I bought I stopped at a store that was closing about two weeks ago. They had the bigger cases set at $259.99, the standard and metric sets were $159.99.

These sets, while currently slightly more than what they were asking when I bought them, were $99.99, $79.94 and $69.94 at non closing stores around the same time. With the SYW prices I paid $40, $30 and maybe $20 (rough estimate since some of those were combined orders with Kmart coffee, freecash, coupons). You’d have to be north of 80% off to match the prices.

By extreme tools I mean like the “extreme grip” diamond screwdriver set, but those were gone. It was more like the extreme grip wrenches and sockets. Everything from that line, they must get those cheap.

As for the “ultimate” line I picked up the transformer sets when they were at $59, someday it might be handy. Some people complain about the ratchets (90 tooth) have you tried yours yet? Just curious how they compare to the 84t set.

The 90 tooth ratchet the biggest drawback is it doesn’t have quick release though it probably makes it stronger. The handle design which I see complaints about doesn’t bother me but I’ve really only used it like 3 times since I don’t do much do to weather at the time of year. I haven’t used the 84t ones much though I do have a set. For ratchets I mostly use some Allied pro ratchets from a set I bought years ago because they have really low drag even though they’re like 75 tooth.

The transformer tool is kinda nice for certain hard to access stuff though the metric one I wish they had more sizes. If you try and bypass the under the manifold heater hose on a grand marquis it would definitely help (when I do those instead of removing the wiper shroud or intake I use fittings to make a reversing bend and route it around the front).

I got this extreme grip set in a bag for $50 on clearance like a year ago. https://www.sears.com/craftsman-40-...lerId=SEARS&prdNo=15&blockNo=15&blockType=G15

They bounce around from $100-200 normally. The bag itself is nice. I can’t see spending $200 for the kit. $100 is closer to the sum of the parts. The sockets are a gimmick. The wrenches aren’t too bad. The ratchet is pretty decent if you like comfort grips.

I also have an extreme grip bit ratchet set which is kinda useful. I don’t know if they still make those. The screwdrivers I have no complaints about.

A potato, small or large is always better when you got it for a deal!

I’ve got an insane amount of points and $50 more every day coming for the next two weeks. And unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of good deals there right now. So much out of stock but I’ll manage.

What was Kmarts price on the cotter key tool during the store closing event. I haven’t been in the closing one near me since November

I bought one before Thanksgiving for less than $3.00 during one of their blowout/clearance events.

Well I had nearly $200 in points to spend so I bought this.

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-78p...SellerId=Sears&prdNo=3&blockNo=3&blockType=G3

Figured they were just slow selling leftover Apex stuff that was still floating around the pipeline. Nope, appears these are now from Great Star as well. I have the Apex sourced deep sockets only from clearance a few years ago so I’ll compare them later in the evening, get some pics if there is any appreciable differences.

Be curious to see how these hold up. There’s a few sizes I use fairly regularly but like the ultimate collection stuff it’s probably gonna be warmer weather before I work on enough stuff to get a true feeling of their durability.

Edit...
Take that back, the set appears to be a mix of codes... how weird. Extensions are an entirely different stamp all together L-AJ. Impact universal adapters are L-AH. Standard depth metrics are S-AF. Set was factory sealed.

Did the 78 piece set come in plastic bags or a tray or something else?

As the other link to the picture shows it comes in a case.

Weird set. Case looks like the ones Great Star sets come with, sockets and extensions seem to be a mix. I wonder if Sears has a 3rd party repackager that repackages loose sockets.

This set was still Sears Brand Management not Transform SR Brands LLC so it’s probably pre bankruptcy unless they were just labeling these with leftover labels. I don’t know how many people shell out $240 for a set of impact sockets at Sears these days I doubt these move very quickly. Could have been leftover production cobbled together in the wake of supplier shortages going into bankruptcy I suppose.

I did notice more stuff appear that’s been missing a while.

Sorry, I just can't help pulling on apple chains when left dangling like low hanging fruit. :)

Lol, actually I saw it after I posted. I didn’t follow the link because in my mind I remembered this photo, and I know the bigger 95 piece impact set just comes in bags:

I think I read the great star ones come with red latches and black cases and apex stuff comes with black latches and black cases? I think the A and different letters is apex different factories, possibly. I know I bought an impact extension set which was made in Taiwan I think, I’ll take a look today at the codes and try to post back.

Honestly does anyone think the “craftsman” impact stuff is any better then the “evolv” impact stuff (which is half the price?)

Sent from my iPhone using The Garage Journal mobile app

Edited to add: so I checked some older impact stuff I had extension has L-AF. A double sided 3/4x13/16 impact has L-AF and a 13/16 standard socket has S-AF. A newer deep 18mm has S-AJ as does a deep 21 but a deep 19 has S-AF. The deep sockets were purchased in the last 30 days....

Edited again to add: Ok I did some more digging L is apex in Taiwan, S is apex in China, the A codes are the year, AJ is 2019, AF would be 2016. AB=2012... AJ=2019 etc.

So apex must crank out the sockets and then assemble the sets somewhere else with whatever is on hand. Surprised SBD doesn’t do the same and label something like this “assembled in USA from global materials” [emoji23]

So they’re ordering from Apex again... interesting. The Layoff board seemed to suggest the vendor relationship was over but if AJ=2019 then they’re ordering from them post bankruptcy. Maybe this explains the sudden reappearance of a bunch of tools like box end wrenches and open ended wrenches they haven’t had since late 2017 early 2018. I mean even without all the big box stores they’ve still gotta supply hometown stores, plus tools are easy to sell online these days.

Z before the date code indicates great star.

As far as the Evolv impact sockets I have the gray case set, and two smaller sets 5 or 6 piece in metric. I got them on clearance at a Sears in a dead mall for like $4 quite a while ago. I had had the SAE sets but unless I misplaced them I think the contractor who did my furnace stole the two SAE ones because I had used them in my basement to disassemble the drum of a broken front load washing machine because I wanted to save all the stainless bolts (there were like 50 of them holding the counter balances and such in place). I had them in my basement and haven’t seen them since (though I will admit my workbench area down there is a mess). This is one reason why I always advocate having SAE on hand for household stuff because for some reason they still seem to use SAE sizes in a lot of household stuff

The on rail sets were a couple of years older than the gray case set. I never used the gray case set, I had actually gotten if on a points deal in the summer of 2016 and had intended to sell it to pay for the cost of a better set but somehow never got around to it, then ended up getting the craftsman deep set on clearance when they did the tool reset that fall (the red cased one with metal latches) and have used that and the small on rail evolve ones. If I get a chance I’ll check production date codes on them. I’m pretty sure the gray evolve set is still from Taiwan. I’d assume the small, rail sets are too since they’re older. Quality wise they seem to hold up OK but the rail sets don’t go very large size wise so I haven’t used them as much as I would use say a lug size. I’d have used the smaller SAE sets more but they’re MIA.

Might be better in the long run, may last longer after extensive usage, but not sure it can be proven? I have a few singles of the CF impact sockets, free with points. I think the finish is better than the evolv, but for the bang for the buck, the evolv sockets win hands down. I used points of course, believed got them for free/almost free.

Agreed about the finish and the easy to read part is better on the craftsman. To me though Taiwan > China which always makes me feel like the eVolv are better...

There are exceptions but I agree - I'd choose Taiwan over MIC 99.9% of the time

FYI for anyone who still has a Hometown... I made my first visit to one during a road trip last week. Bought a clearance item no longer available to me elsewhere. The price in-store was higher than the price I had seen on the Hometown website before I started driving. Store employees said I'd have to order online for pickup if I wanted that price. But when I reopened the Hometown product page on my phone standing in the store, the damn site detected that I was in/near the store and changed the online price to the higher price! I didn't realize it wasn't a real price increase until I got home and checked again, and it was 'back' to the previous lower price! Nasty little trick I'd never heard about / seen before.

For those with non-closing corporate stores nearby... I'm not sure when this offer ends, but the coupon you'll receive reportedly expires 7 days from when you receive it. First, text STOP to 73277 (Sears) or 56278 (Kmart), since this offer is only for people not already subscribed to texts. Then, text JINGLE to the same store's number. This should get you a $10 off $25+ in-store-only coupon, but it takes a day or so to send it to you.

It happened to be this weird ratchet, but they can do this on any item now that the technology is in place. So the point is if you're buying at a Hometown, you can't just do a last-minute online order at the store anymore to get a better deal (unless maybe if you bother to set up a GPS spoofing app), which I had done quite a few times at my corporate Sears with no problem.

And it used to be you could order most Hometown store items through the Sears.com site instead of the Hometown site, but they've recently removed that ability for all but a few items (the rest all went to "call the store" status), so that isn't a workaround anymore. (And in this item's case, the Sears.com price was even higher than the Hometown in-store price anyway.)

When my corporate store finishes closing, the next-closest store for me will be a Hometown. Not close enough for me to go there very often anyway, but this first-impression experience did not exactly make me feel like making much effort to go there again. :p

Interesting. So the moral is turn off location before you get close I guess?

Yeah, I'm not sure how far out you'd have to have planned ahead to turn it off, it may require experimenting at several distances if someone with more convenient Hometowns wants to look into it further. (Might just be the immediate vicinity of the store, might be a few blocks radius, might be the whole town...) I had no idea it wasn't a real price increase unrelated to my location (thought it was just unlucky timing) until I got home. And even if I'd suspected while still at the store when I saw the price change, I think it was too late without a spoofing app since it already had my last-known location on file as being in the store.

I never expected more technical trickery out of the semi-'mom-and-pop' side of Sears than what I've been used to from corporate Sears. :headscrat

It wasn't enough of a price change to make me not buy it as a one-time thing since it's rarely convenient for me to go there, but it left me with a negative feeling, and I wanted to make others aware that this is a thing they can do now.

Interesting. Staples used to do something similiar, their prices would change if you clicked thru a cashback or mileage portal/website. Not on every item but most of their sale items the price would jump far more that the amount of the cashback.

GameStop won’t let you checkout if going thru a cashback site for many items as well. At least that’s been my experience.

A lot of things went up in price today or out of stock, one notable exception is the price of this 23 piece impact set went down to around $70, not a hot buy, but only available for ship to store in late January. Also a good opportunity to chat for a price adjustment - the 12 piece deep craftsman impact set (SAE and metric) and the 10 piece evolv set jumped substantially.

So if you use a 5/50 and a sears card it drops it to about $61 and change less any points you’re rolling into it.

This isn’t a bad set. This is the one I got on clearance a few years ago and used as opposed to the gray cased evolve set.

Speaking of Evolve I think it was $69 last week and now is $59.88 https://www.sears.com/craftsman-evo...SellerId=Sears&prdNo=2&blockNo=2&blockType=G2

It’s barely below the $15 on $60 so you could add a small filler if you want $15 back or if you’ve got a $25 points installment it’s really cheap. Dunno if they’re still Taiwan. Our store doesn’t stock them anymore but can get them January 6th for pickup which isn’t too bad or faster if you get it to $35 after points and have it shipped.

Interesting. So the moral is turn off location before you get close I guess?

And don't use the store wifi and turn off Bluetooth.

FWIW, most stores detect when you are in the store and adjust website prices, the term is "dynamic pricing". Amazon started it, most stores have adopted it.

Some of the Evolv stuff has switched to China, though I don't know about that particular set.

It may have, our store hasn’t carried it since the tool reset 2 years ago. I’d have to order it just to see. It was made by Apex when it was made in Taiwan, but I don’t even know if it still is since the Evolv stuff all has different cases than regular craftsman they could even have switched the vendor since. Apex made the Taiwan made Craftsman specialty impact set too which appears to be long gone now but I got from around the same timeframe (those weren’t cased, they were an add on set and who knows how old they were).

Still at $59.88 it’s not a bad deal, it’s about as low as it ever goes and if you had a $25 points installment it puts it right around free shipping even if there’s no Sears around. I doubt there’s a significant difference anyway vs regular craftsman they probably just don’t have the laser markings and it has fewer pieces. Unlike Harbor Freight’s $30 set it has deep sizes.

In other Sears stuff the box end wrenches they were missing for a year shipped today. Hopefully it’ll answer whether these were new stock and who makes them. I’m kinda happy they got these back in in time to use points. Double box end non ratcheting wrench sets that aren’t offset are kinda hard to find at any reasonable price. Proto wants like $200 for a set, snap on and wright want well north of $300. Complete overkill for a standard homeowner who wants them.

Got that evolv set in my cart too buy not sure on it everything is 1/2 in. drive was hoping for a mix in drive sizes.

A mix would be nice but I suppose fr their budget line you can’t argue too much. I can’t believe how they’ve never updated the picture of it on their site.

If anybody’s desperate to burn points I found these shark pullers and prybars which I thought had decent prices, eligible for coupons:

https://www.sears.com/search=Shark

Ship from a sears authorized supplier, some for free some with a small charge.
Seems to be made in Japan if hardened steel.

I also finally broke down and got some of the mob peddlnghaus stuff just to check it out, I’ll post back once I get all of it with some pics.
