OR, Thanks for that info! I had no idea this was the last type made in the USA. You're right that it's got both type 20 and type 21 features. Like a type 20 the body has a) plane size cast on the toe in front of the knob, b) Bailey cast on the toe behind the knob, c) Made in USA cast behind the frog, d) the ogee shaped frog but it doesn't have the frog adjustment screw. I just find that interesting and wonder how that happened. Type 20 has the frog adjustment screw. Did they start out early making the ogee shaped frogs with no adj screw but then decided to change the ogee shaped frog later during the type 21 era? And you say it has the Y or Wishbone frog base of a type 19 but again without the frog adj screw! When did that occur that they made this somewhat distinct frog and body? Weird! But makes it way more interesting to me now knowing all this.

Most tool manufacturers used up old stocks of usable parts immediately following a design change. It's an easy way to see if you might have a tool made within the first few weeks/months after the change. The more carry-overs, the earlier it was probably made.

Made a tactical error on Thursday when I bought the Cornwell and Diamalloy wrenches.

The error was not buying the three panel Herbrand tool display boards they had nailed to the back wall of the garage. I didn't get back to the sale the next day and today they were gone. Did any other San Antonio GJ members scoop them up?

Well it didn't take long for them to pop up on Ebay...

Yeah, that was definitely an error. I came across one at an estate sale late last year but it was in such bad shape I passed on it even though I think I could likely have picked it up for next to nothing. Those three should have gone home with you. Out of curiosity do you recall what they wanted for them that first day? Live and learn though. Right?

Shipping those in such a way that they don't get wrecked will be a task (I had to spend time fixing some boards I received that could've used more padding).

That particular estate sale company isn't too strict about marking/pricing most garage items unless they are big ticket items. If no one asks or if they run away after asking, they are usually pretty reasonable on the second or third day. I honestly didn't think there would be much interest the first day and therefore didn't want to establish an interest. I thought I would make it back the second day but couldn't--and that's when they sold. The guy working the garage couldn't remember what they sold for.

I once spotted an old Craftsman "lunchbox" toolbox that had been repainted at a swap meet once. I passed on it, but later that day I saw it in an antique mall. I hope someone made a buck on it.

The "Small" thing - and it's really small, is a complimentary tie-clip, made of brass, that looks exactly like a 1930's-1950's era Snap/on Torq-o-Meter torque wrench!

attachment.php

I like that tie clip a lot. :) I have a small collection of tie clips in a similar mechanical vein - a pair of pliers, a gear, a jet engine, a forklift truck, etc. I don't wear ties very often any more, but when I did I used them all the time.

So did the seller, Stuart. Most of them were newer, though. The funny thing is he wasn't selling any tools. He was a salvage guy. All kinds of antique steel, iron, and brass pieces taken off of other things. Park bench legs, door knobs, finials, etc, all in the dozens. I almost walked past his table but happened to spot a small glass case.

I was surprised to pick these up today for $6.50 at the thrift store. All USA made: Craftsman VV 1/2 SAE sockets and 1 3/8" drive, some cheap misc sockets, 10 " Cresent wrench and a KD 7 x 8 mm wrench.

The fleamarkets don't start back up until Feb- Mar so this was an unexpected find.

Found this Baldor 623E bench grinder on facebook. Been looking to replace my weak, off-brand grinder; knew I couldn't afford a Baldor and planned to buy a Wen off of amazon. This one popped up about 25 miles from my house and purrs with no vibration. Stripping it down now to prime and paint. Not sure what color yet - never liked plain grey. Need to replace the eye guards and 1 tool rest.

Not a garage sale, but at the local ReStore, I picked these up recently, all shown after a few minutes of wire brushing, etc. The hatchet was $5, pliers & crescent adjustable were $1 each.

Today's haul from a few local pawn shops. Total spent, $29. A bunch of random sizes and brands to fill gaps...but my favorite part is the 3/4" SK 47170 that I got for $15

Is that the last set of Radio Shack parts drawers in existence? I remember being sad when they downsized from the wall of components to the drawers sometime in the late 90s...

May I suggest Power Bronze? (vintage Craftsman color) RustOleum Hammered Gold is a good match.

I was in the market for a new Gen2 US general tool chest but found this Gen1 44" top and bottom for $500 on Offer Up. I much prefer it since it matches up with my current 44" gen 1.

Found in a damp cardboard box full of rusty scrap at a garage sale near me.

I’ve never seen a pulley with a grease fitting before. I soaked it in Simple Green to remove gobs of greasy dirt and the old paint.

Does anybody recognize the company logo...a Star with a K ?

I’m pretty sure this is not a certified kosher pulley. :)

Gotta love it when the spheres align like that, and drop fortune in your lap. Look good together. (Of course, now you’ll be looking for another top box!)

Hit a couple of estate sales with tools today. At the first, I scored four Craftsman locking pliers and a Knipex 12" Pliers Wrench (#86 03 300) all for $20. I was so happy with that that I didn't mind forking over $5 for the Chinese Drill index--most of which look unused.

At the second place I picked up a 6" wire cup-$2, and a Blue Point chain wrench (CW24) $5. They had a good supply of Snap On tools available but marked with Snap On prices. I suspect they didn't realize the Snap On-Blue Point connection or it would have been priced at $50 instead of $5. I've been looking for a nice chain wrench for a while now and this will clean up very nicely.

09 Jan 20.jpg

All the tools have surface grunge that will clean off easily--except the Knipex, which looks brand new.

Picked up this 12x18x3 Mojave (aka Precision Granite) surface plate off CL this evening. It's AA grade. Accuracy rated at .000050". Weighs in at 81 lbs. I'll use it to sharpen plane irons, chisels and flatten tools that need it. Cost me $50.

I had a minor jackpot (per my own criteria...:pimpflash) this morning at the flea market (Lugz 2020_02), which is starting to pick up, as expected, with hard-core vendors, who tend to mutually enjoy the winter months as much as the hard-core buyers, and for the same reason: we're the only ones there!

As some of you know, I've been looking for barristers to display my antique tools and tool sets. Most of the time they are out of my price range. Last year I ran into a nice old barbershop case, for free (curbside bulk pickup), photos linked here and here, and I got almost as lucky today.

This seller, a liquidator, was looking to not have to haul this back home, so he let it go cheap. It comes apart into three pieces. The glass fronts are sliding drop downs, not hinged. I will post more photos in Drives' 'Wood cabinets' thread and the very recent 'Display Case' thread, both down on the Vintage Discussion forum.

The messy coil of genuine three-strand manila rope (guessing 100, maybe 150 feet) with no tracer (vintage!) is going to be made into Jeep bumper tow ropes with spliced and whipped loop ends (I did a tutorial on GJ, linked here), which I sell, as many as I can get out of it, hopefully at least six (6).

attachment.php

I need another flaring kit like I need a hole in the head (my collection is shown and discussed on Beemer’s ‘Reefer’ thread, linked here), but this (Edelmann, Chicago) is one with an unusual and neat design that I have never seen before. Instead of a sliding anvil over a bar with a series of holes with various diameters, you dial those two die-halves together. I like it.

The valve adjustment tool is a ZIM. Now I am guessing they made them for others, because I have a New Britain and a Hastings that look and work just like this. You can rotate to either of the two box ends (for holding the locknut) and you use the knob to turn the slot-type adjuster.

Hit an estate sale this morning. Spent $11. $3 for the Coleman stove, $3 for the Tupperware container that I'll use for soaking tools in Evapo-rust and $5 for all the rest - couple of welding clamps, files w/handles & some chain which I needed to repair an old set of wind chimes for my mother. The little B&D grinder was free. The son of the PO said when he turned it on it just hums but the wheels don't turn. I'm not electrically inclined but hoping I can get the cute little ****** running.

They had a big Coleman stove/oven thing that I'd never seen before. I'd started a thread asking about it yesterday. Hoping Outlaw knows something about the little Coleman stove I bought and the big Coleman stove I didn't which is linked here.

Lugz, nice scores! I also am always on the lookout for barrister bookcases, not for tools, but as I have so many books. And I have one of the pipe flaring tools like that also, forgot all about it.

Tex, nice find on the camp stove!

I had to run out of town, so while I was away yesterday I make a couple of stops. Both at the Restore and an old appliance repairman who is closing shop (he is 84)

Herbrand spinner, Snap-on and Craftsman sockets, a Proto 11/32" wrench and a Stanley replacement tape. But the real gems:

Plomb pullers. Not in the best condition, as the smaller ones forcing screw is Proto and the jaws are ground on, along with the 10-ton screw bunged up a bit, its been ground on and one arm is Proto, but at the cost of helping an old guy retire, I couldn't pass. He also gave me this:

a Williams 1/2 socket box. The guy as been in business for probably 60 years, and has just an incredible amount of stuff in his shop and grounds. A good 50 riding mowers out front, along with attachments, everything from a monitor top to arc welders inside. Along with cobblers kits, 3-p motors, sewing machines, old toys, etc. I stop in whenever I am down that way, and always find something interesting. But someday he will be gone.

EDIT: And the manila rope measures out 125 feet. That's 5 tow ropes. The old English expression "Money for old rope" (where's Oily Nails when you need him?!) has never been more apt! :)

Tx, Nice find on the Stove! the case double as cook pots, not an oven.

Military, the early once were WWII some were post war, (Model No?) Does it have:
  • The handle for the pots?
  • A funnel? (on a chain)
  • is there a "repair kit" pocket (with a cap) and is it populated?

Nice finds, guys! We had three sales on the agenda today but only the first one was worthwhile. We arrived at the second sale in Castro Valley right when it was supposed to open. There was a huge line that never moved for the 15 minutes we waited. We gave it up and moved on to the next sale in Fremont, CA but there was nothing there to buy. The first sale had some tools left even though we arrived a little late. There was some Craftsman =v= wrenches and unused screwdrivers, which we grabbed. There were two especially cool finds from my perspective. The Barcalo Buffalo 3/8” x 7/16” shorty DBE wrench is a rare GMTK correct wrench. It took me a couple of years to find my first one. The other find was an inexpensive multi screwdriver but it was marked “I made a suggestion”.
Next line read “Fisher Body — Oakland 1957”. That one is a keeper! There was a long Powr-Kraft cold chisel, a Blue Point 10” adjustable wrench and a Snap-on 1/2” x 9/16” ratchet wrench. I picked up my first Vlchek wood handled nutdriver, along with a Riverside, Lectrolite, Mac and Duro ignition wrench. The wood handled screwdriver is Proto LA

Outlaw,

See the pic of everything that came with the little stove. I added back the piece of the "grate" with a cotter pin. Found the model # and included a pic. It's stamped "No. 530". Under the Made in USA stamp there is "B46" stamped on the tank. Nothing that looks like a repair kit is with this one. I'm not sure what you mean by "is it populated". It seems to be in pretty decent condition to an inexperienced eye.

The oven I mentioned was on the other BIG Coleman stove not this little one. See pics. FWIW, they said the big one works and they'd fired it up to check. Firing it up didn't happen while I was there though. But these folks seemed very trustworthy. The children of the parents that passed last year. I tried to get a pic of the model # and other info that was on the inside of that smallish left front door but it just came out a blur.

Great early finds, gents!
Nice big BP chain wrench, OR. And those Knipix retail for around $50, don’t they?!
Lugz, I know you’ve been seeking barristers for some time now - that one looks to be solid oak - I’ve seen a few that were faux-painted to look like it, but “sellers” still price them too high. Glad you got a good one at a price you like.
Txlh - too bad about the blurred inside pic, but that’s a cool photo-story nonetheless.
Don - picking out the cherries, I see.
It’s been slow here, but there’s a warming trend this weekend ahead of some rain, which might change the game. I’m looking at two indoor fleas this weekend, and an outdoor steam show and swap next weekend.

Some cool finds there Don!

TX, 1946 (b-46) so post war

IIR the earlier ones had the spare parts pocket in the tank - looked a lot like a fill cap. but you don't need two on these...

The flat plate is a "simmering" plate as they tend to be pretty much on of off.

Nice that the plate, pot handle/wrench, and the funnel are still with it!

This "grate" bars will hinge out to support a larger pot as well.

Does it hold pressure? does it have fuel in it still? (If so hopefully not old pump gas but white gas or Coleman fuel...)

Nice work man on the puller. Along with a couple sets of arms.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrench 3061
