So it was an interesting Garage Sale weekend.

We picked up what appeared to be a reasonable set of file cabinets and a table top to replace my son's tanker desk in his bedroom. We were looking for something in the 30" depth range to open up the room a little bit. Upon getting the table top home we realized it was a mess and wasn't worth using.

My son then did a Craigslist Free search for "desk" and came upon a Mid Century Modern desk 15 minutes away from us for FREE. He emailed her his details and she called him 45 minutes later. We ran and picked it up last night.

It's in really nice shape bit there isn't a single manufacturer's mark on the desk. We moved it into his bedroom just now . . .

There are 2 locked cubbys on the opposite side of the drawers. The prior owner lost the key to the desk and removed one of the drawer lockets and had a key made. The key only opens the lock they gave to the locksmith. I haven't pulled the locks I can remove to see if there are any identifying marks.

Cheers

Jim

Outlaw, one screw is missing on the cover and when I hit the return button there isn't much zip to actually return the tape. Also, you can see there's a little bend in the tape as well but I think if the return spring was good that might not be an issue. I was a bit scared to remove that other remaining screw thinking things might pop out of there like one of those cans of snakes jokes.

Sounds like I can remove that other screw and check things out. Any gotchas I need to worried about when doing that?

Thanks!

Gah. It pains me to see those lunchpail boxes. One of my stupidest 'stupid me' flea market stories. I've told it many times. Didn't like the price. Thought I'd be able to talk him down at the end of the day after walking around, and of course, it was gone. Even thumbed the grime off the decal for someone else to be able to ID it more easily.

JoCo has a good tutorial on them in the Long C thread.

My latest find is a tool if your task is to make frozen Margaritas. :)

It’s a Waring “Blendor”
model FC 1

I love the rocket ship design. This dates back to the 1940s AFAIK

Free at the recycling center near me.
I had to spend 15-20 minutes cleaning off some dried on milkshake or ??? that was spattered all over it. Some silicone made the plastic top look much better. It runs very smoothly. Sounds like a turbine. 3 amp motor. Blades are sharp and not bent. Original power cord and plug in good shape too.

750 ml. Scotch bottle added for scale. Blender is 16 inches tall!

My first score of the new year, nothing terribly exciting in hindsight, but seemed decent at the time.

Got 3 Disston saws for parts, 1 broad hatchet,
1" BluePoint combo,
7/8"x13/16" Williams Superrench DOE
Proto 5/8" Combo Long
Vlchek 1/2x9/16 DBE,
fancy Wire stripper,
misc: Stanley 442 Saw set, 2x lathe tooling, StaKon crimper, channel lock cutter, 1-1/8" piloted counterbore, metal handled gimlet, Socket set mostly japan made, w/ Bonney T702K ratchet, odd ratchet screwdriver, German made scissors, stubby mortise chisel, augers, Stanley 12" x 1/2" screwdriver, yardstick, tiny brass clamp, 1/2" internal pipe wrench.

Was quite excited about the Bonney ratchet, and made 2 rookie moves. Didn't check the rest of the set, stupidly thought I'd made a killer buy on a full Bonney set, but it was only a good buy on the Bonney ratchet, the rest of the Japan made set is going out at the next garage sale. The scissors seemed good, but in the poor light I couldn't see that someone had poorly resharpened the inner flat surface.
]Oh well, gotta shake the rust off the brain and get back at it.

It has been slow around here for the last couple of months. I did find some things at the Restore and a local charity store as shown in Photo #1.

Photo #1:
Mossberg "Indestructable" 1/2 drive spinner. The only markings visible are "ssberg" and "Attleboro Mass USA" Possibly a #367 based on comparison to the Alloy Artifacts example. 4.2" throw, 19.0" Overall length.

Amflow 1/2" air hose coupler. Brand new.

Bog Mfg. Company 5/8" hex spinner with a wood knob.

Western Auto Stores feeler gauge with ruler.

Proto LA 1224 1-5/16" Combo wrench.

Photo #2, bought off Offerup in bmwrd0's backyard:

Plomb LA 1160 1-1/4x1-3/8 DBE with the big end broken off
Plomb USA 1147 1-1/16x1-5/16 DBE with the big end broken, brazed, and broken again.
Plomb USA 1155 1-1/4x1-5/16 DBE
Plomb LA 1162 1-7/16x1-1/2 DBE
Plomb Pebble 1160 1-1/4x1-3/8 DBE

Photo #3 is a Heritage tool box I bought to hold an appropriate 1/2" drive set. The contents made the purchase worthwhile:

Photo #4 is the tray of the Heritage box with the following tools:

Tiny utility knife, pulley

4 NAPA 777-1038 Stainless wire brushes (New! My cost on these is more than I paid for the whole package, and I get a huge commercial discount)

China vise grips and pliers

Mechanics 1/2 combo

Stahlwille 2054 12mm (2054/12) 1/2 drive socket

Mitutoyo protractor

Starrett combo square with EMPIRE USA blade

Craftsman 9/16" swivel socket =V=

Craftsman 3/8 dr. deep sockets 3/8" to 7/8" missing the 3/4" =V=

Thorsen 10mm 3/8 dr. 6 pt. socket

Truecraft 3/8 drive 30130 RHFT ratchet

SK 45116 1/2" 6 pt. socket

Craftsman =V= 7/16" 6 pt. socket

Photo #5 is the rest of the Heritage toolbox contents:

Cheap slip joint pliers

Cheap strap wrench

4 cheap adjustable wrenches

unmarked older dividers

unmarked scissors with interesting tips

Total investment in all this was less than $40.00.

Thanks! That 1949 illustration is a match. I tried keyword searches for “lunchbox” and “tombstone” without success on the longC and heritage love threads without success, then bogged down reading the first lines of JoCo’s prolific posts with a username search... approximately what post number is the tutorial around?

You’re in the game! Disstons look like a D23, D7 and D8. I think you’d sell those Japan sockets quick enough on eBay, if you wanted, especially if you had a Japan ratchet that fit the slot. I think they command more respect than equivalent Taiwan and China tools.

Yeah, not for nothin', but if you even think of making a Frozen Whiskey Smash or a Frozen Drunk Uncle etc etc with that white oak single malt, I am going to play my Hostem Emeritus card and ban you myself!
:lol_hitti

Ha ha :bounce:

I was wondering if anybody would recognize that bottle of one of the best from the isle of Islay.
I drink such single malt whiskys neat. And needless to say in moderation.

I've been holding off any hunts until I got my garage built up enough so my "storage" wasn't a pile in the center of the garage (Finally have a garage and installing drywall!) but with an estate sale 2 blocks away I couldn't help myself!
Ended up with a small pile:
2 - 5" c clamps (missing flats)
Bottle Jack
NOS Grind wheel
3/4 HP craftsman motor (wired and works!)
Miller falls box cutters (with NOS blades in the handle)
various files
6 - NOS jig saw and coping saw blades
Black and Decker workmate ( this is the third I have but the cleanest and has the addons)
a Kennedy 1018 that needs a little straightening
and two shovels and a push broom for the shop
- $50

I posted my first Wilton bullet vise (4" jaws) yesterday. It had the vise nut, vise nut housing and end cap missing. The pins to retain the vise nut are bent and the swivel base plate has a thru crack in it. Paid $40 thinking it's a parts vise plus some getting familiar with bullet vises before I get to parting it out. I got a text this morning from the guy I bought it from Sunday morning. This is the pic he sent me...

IMG_0025.JPG

I went to pick it up immediately. He didn't want more for the vise either. We both agreed how lucky it was that his son not only found it in the garage but recognized it might be something before everything gets thrown out on Tue.

Yes! I am thanking my lucky stars!

I'm giving you a "You ****" for being so lucky!
+1!
That’s going to tip you toward a full repair and restoration, I am afraid. If I understand where the crack is, you can still use the static tower without the swivel base, as a stationary vise, while you consider brazing the base or searching a replacement.

Great start! That 3/4hp motor looks like it needs some work to do. Maybe it’s from a table saw?

Why am I re-posting a photo of Old Radar's "1917" US Army mess kit knife?

Because I saw the movie 1917 last night and I am using it as a prop and an excuse to drop a quick review.

The movie is terrific without caveat and deserves all the raves and awards it is getting. Much has been said in reviews about the cinematography, which is fabulous, but I actually think the focus on that detracts from the overall reception it is getting. While the timeline for the movie is only one full day, it manages to capture the totality of the Great War with subtle, thematically rich and sophisticated storytelling. I walked away amazed how a movie can be so simple and minimalist in premise/plot (which the trailers give away) and scope/field-of-view (strictly following only two characters, and really, for the most part, one) and yet so complex and maximalist (grand is the word that comes to mind) in magnitude at the same time. It is utterly captivating and moving on every level - visceral, emotional, and intellectual. It's a war movie, to be sure. And there are violent episodes, to be sure. But it's the human interactions between the two main characters and others they encounter that lift it into something more special.

$83.25 for all that, and a cantilever box? I think that deserves a “Je zuigt!”

Got lucky with this one. Only a hand full of crappy tools. Among them are Gedore, Stahlwille, Belzer, Bessey, Bahco and Picard. Wrenches are mostly bigger sizes, 24+. Also found a vintage Blue Point in the tool box.

I saw this blue cab on fb marketplace for $40. Turned out it was from the owner of an industrial resale shop. He is in his 30s and bought the business from someone else. He buys out old shops and resells the contents or scraps them out for parts, but he also gets a lot of stuff not worth his time. This was something that he didn't want to put in the scrap bin cause he mostly deals with heavy metal machining equipment, but also has little things. It turned out to be a Le Febure Corp out of Iowa. They made things for banks it looks and there was an old Boatmen's bank zipper case lost in the back with a '43 mercury dime.

He said I should look around. He has a yard full of rusting behemoths antique and old. Inside the "shop" I was astonished about the quantity of materials. I felt like I was on American Pickers. He had nuts and bolts organized for $2/ lb lathes, mills, an old Pexto brake, flat file cabinets, a cigarette machine all pushed and shoved together and on top. I almost missed this green cabinet.

He had to clear out the remaining bolts out of it and he thought it was some sort of dental cabinet. We dolly it out to the pickup and I see the brass Chevrolet emblem on the bottom! What I had thought was a cool cab already turned out to be a Chevy dealer parts cab! I will have to do some resto to it and may end up in the house instead of the garage. He also had 4 oak machinist chests, some were Gerstner, and I left him my number for when he prices out a vintage older brown one.

I have attached a pic of the flat file, I did not buy it and I would have a hard time to justify the purchase at the moment, but this was stacked onto 5 others about 15 ft tall. My wife would have definitely not liked me for a while with our 1300 sq ft house

All in for $90.

I’m sorry - I screwed up a detail of the story! It was marked $38, and she agreed to $35. No wonder Outlaw questioned that. So I guess that made it closer to 10% off day for me.

OK, I stand corrected in light of the rest of your photos. That latch is original! Ya dun gud Bubba!
