With the addition of the 11/32” deep socket that arrived today, this 1/4” set is finally complete. A little newer than most of my S-K tools, it will live in my regular toolbox.

I have the same exact set and coincidentally am missing the 11/16" deep. Must have been a popular socket.

It arrived today, guess it was black once! A pretty rough example but the knurled part of the handle is definitely black and there are traces of the black here and there. It, like my sockets, was not a "toolbox queen"!

When I get one I usually saturate the head with WD40. They generally work fine once a little lube gets inside.
This plain finish 1/2” socket arrived as part of a trade with Roy and completed my wartime 3/8” drive set. I added some spares in the last picture. Thanks, Roy!

I found this nice postwar 1/4” drive set box on eBay recently. The interior looked like it never held any tools. I put tools in it from a box that wasn’t in such good condition. The paint on the bottom was worn so I resprayed just that area with some paint that is a very close match.

Hi D,
I meant that it looks pretty rough, has rust etc. etc. I think it's genuine based on the black knurled part and some bits of black at the head. The main part of the shaft has pretty big rust spots. It appears to be just fine mechanically and allthough I haven't tried to use it on anything I suspect it will work perfectly well; just doesn't look good, and I missed one which looks great!

BTW I did see some S-K Wayne black oxide stuff offered for sale. Surely that's not WWII?

Wayne was not part of sk until later. Maybe an industrial finish

Yes, I'm no expert but it seems that I read somewhere S-K Wayne is from the middle '50s isn't it?
Maybe an industrial finish ... that makes sense. Snap-on sells some tools in black as I recall; they are a little cheaper than the regular ones I think.

Symington-Wayne purchased SK in '62 and was branding the product by '64, and by the late sixties Symington-Wayne was purchased by Dresser Industries. Some people say the Wayne era is of lessor quality, but I have never seen it.

I found this partial S-K 12 point deep set on eBay. It came with a socket rack that I know I’ve seen before but I can’t find it in any S-K catalog. The purpose of the purchase was to complete my early ‘40s set with 12 point sockets which I believe it would have come with. The set included a rather short 5/8” deep socket I hadn’t seen before and I added it to the set because it looked like belonged there, even though it ended up with two 5/8” sockets. I filled the odd rack with S-K deep sockets as shown in the last picture.

Nice case. I have never seen an SK one like that. I have seen a few Craftsman ones but with the stepdown like that is it must be SK

These are the first pictures I have ever seen of an S-K Chrome 3/8" drive socket. Are these sockets hard to find or have I been looking in the wrong places? I got this one as soon as I saw it, S-K Chrome 45100.

Did the earlier sets come with a short 5/8?

That is one I have never seen. The 3/8" SK chromes are rare.

Looking for a Plomb 3061 Pebble Open End.

Oldtuleguy has a 3/8” drive 5/8 deep socket, which is the only other 3/8” drive S-K Chrome socket I’ve seen. The 1/4” drive and 1/2” drive S-K Chrome are much more common.
By the way, OTG, I found another slightly newer short 3/8” drive 5/8” socket plus one in a picture on the ‘43 catalog cover but not inside the catalog where the longer socket is shown.

I think they switched to the longer 5/8” socket around late 1941 or 1942. They mention that it will work on the spark plugs of 1941 Buicks and Chevrolets and the shorter 5/8” deep would be too short for a spark plug

Not mine, but these screwdrivers look like the Kraeuter red handles by SK. I don't need them. Maybe somebody here would.

With an assist from Roy, I picked up this odd eBay lot that contained several Chrome Alloy sockets made by S-K. I’ve been gathering these sockets ever since I found the ratchet a few years back. I now have all of the tools that the Brazil set would have contained except for one significant item. The Brazil marked box. I’m hopeful that one will eventually turn up. I ended up with quite a few extras.

Heres a set of 1/2 sockets that I found in my Dads tool box. They have no markings except the size and the dots on each side of the size. Best I can tell it looks like they are from the 30s.

Those are very early S-K sockets. Alloy Artifacts dates them as being made in 1932. Here is my set.

Hello all! I am working on some research that the supplier of sk tool chests also supplied the p&c tool company with their rollers and boxes. Below are snap shots from the 1940 catalog. The top chest is a spitting image of sk war time top chests and the color is listed as a wrinkle finish crystalline... so a light green


The bottom “tool wagon” is listed as dark green and looks almost identical to this lower roller owned by member oldtoolguy...




I am wondering who made these for sk?

Even though the listing shows the set as having nine sockets in the 1941 catalog, I found an image showing a set with eight sockets in the catalog as part of a master set.

Mine don’t say that. They probably added it after they had to warranty some of the special thin wall sockets. Typically, sockets are frequently used for everything but their intended special purpose. They are just about the right sizes for lug nuts!

S-K did a lot of contract sales all through their history. Those are cool sets. Here is an S-K set with tools that I bought new. I found the box at an estate sale and reconstructed the set. The original box was long gone.
