So, just to get out of the house, I drove half-way down the length of the state to meet an old cogger and buy some tools. I spent more than I planed (he wouldn't be talked down) but that is OK as he was a nice guy, and he opened his shop for me (a little junk shop) which is a rarity in this day and age.

All Proto professional except the ratchets, and I couldn't pass up the circle U.

Sounds like the tool fever within the beaver fever! Looks like found some goodies there.

Also facing the withdrawls here. I can’t wait to return to a flea market or sale of some sort.

Here's my score for the year. Guy owns a construction company, construction company is devastated by carona, needs to liquidate some tools. I drove 12 hours round trip to go get it. It's a ranger 225 welder/generator that I paid $1500 for. All of the plugs work, 3verything works and it's a 2015 model with 375ish hours of runtime on it. I will he planning on using it to start my mobile welding/fabrication business. Picture is in the next post because garage journals being weird on mobile

This was my score today: Justrite 894522 acid/flam storage cabinet. 300 lbs empty was a ***** to move. Glad it's in place in the barn and loaded.
Cost: zero. 20200504_165713.jpg20200504_165228.jpg

Anyone needs a lawnmower?

20200501_075759.jpg

Picked up three more for free on Saturday.

20200502_204345.jpg

Then found two more today out for trash!

20200504_193332.jpg

They all have been free so far from picking up on trash day.

The first 5 needs air filters before they are sold. Seems shipping has screw up several orders of filters so far. Hopefully the batch of 10 gets here this time!

So how many of the lawnmowers found on trash day have been so broken that they were, in fact, trash? I'll wager it is close to zero, as people are too quick to throw stuff out these days.

Just 1, apparently a mouse made a home under the pull cord cover and locked the governor in wide open position. Which lead to the connecting rod deciding to want to see daylight!

I had 2 that was just too many parts missing or deck rusted that they became part mowers.

Overall they mostly needed some tlc and they were back in working condition!

I won a welding torch in an online auction for about 1/3 of the new price. I have always been too cheap to pay the inflated price for one of these new.

Not exactly a garage sale, but they did come out of a garage.
View media item 103671
Buddy's dad had these saws that didn't run for various reasons. Asked me to pick what I wanted, asked him how much for all 5 and he said "how about $60" and I said "each?" And he said "no, $60 for all of them". Done! Even if they required lots of work I could be money ahead.

Jonsered CS2171
Jonsered 2065 Turbo
Husqvarna 550xp
2X Stihl MS170

I was able to get the 2171 running almost right away, and offered it back to the guy but he didn't accept the offer. He can't even pick the saw up anymore.

Cleaned up with just a quick wipe down and runs great.

The 550 started right up after I removed the melted oil pump that clogged up the sprocket.

Also turned into a possible lucrative side job, as one of his sons is a firefighter and asked if I would be interested in working on their saws.

Thank you. You know what makes the deal even better, I have all of them running already. All with various issues, but none with major issues. The two MS170s just needed the spark arrestor screens cleaned, you couldn't see light through either of them. The 550xp had a melted oil pump that gummed up the sprocket, so it just bogged down whenever you gave it gas. The CS2171 needed a sprocket bearing. He said it had a bent crankshaft, it was just missing half the bearings. And the 2065 just needed a new fuel filter and the carb cleaned.

Its been a very dirty day of cleaning saws, but very rewarding. Now I need to pick up some chains.

Does this count?

Jet JMD-18 mill/drill.

Free from work cleanout. Barely used (for prototyping only).

I have the table and stand (disassembled for transport). Have a line on a vice, will need to buy arbor(s), tooling, etc.

Mike

Free always counts

Thanks. Also got a couple of old 4-drawer steel filing cabinets.

Might get a couple of tables, too. Including one that raises and lowers with a crank. Not really sure what that's for...

Mike

A free milling machine? You ****.
Post a picture of the table, whether you take it or not. There’s a few situations where flexible height would be advantageous (workpiece layout, assembly), but the construction (or branding and model number) of the table would be the biggest clue to its use.

mike:
As said, you definitely **** on that deal. A mint condition JET mill ($2500 new) for free?? No tooling? Maybe somebody else grabbed that. I’m sure you’re not complaining. :)

Estate Sales from the past...

(Staying at home going through stuff...)
I found this Wilton Shop King I picked up for $20. Estate sale price tag still attached.

Thanks guys. Sorry that i haven't posted back in this thread in a while.

Work has been insanely busy. I've even been working on weekends (which totally *****, being a salaried employee). Makes these "freebies" seem less "free" but still fun to grab!

I keep forgetting to take pics of that lift table, will try to remember to do that.

I did finally the Jet mill/drill into my garage (turned into a mini ordeal). It's still in pieces, need time to get a mobile base made from some other free stuff I got at work (large stainless mobile bases for mini clean rooms). I have a separate thread with more pics here:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=446274

I've also acquired more "free" stuff, cleaning out Dad's basement [was previously my Grandfather's (maternal grandmother's second husband, who recently passed away)]. Nothing of monetary value, but I got three vices, two circular saws, a unique drill press and a couple of boxes of tools, mostly Craftsman. Also a Suncast plastic shed.

My grandfather was awesome at pulling stuff out of work (he has at least a half dozen Metro racks, which I'll also be taking when Dad moves out later this month). That's where the DP came from, I have a thread here:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=446987

And, two accordions, which were extremely poorly stored (hardware on the cases is very rusty, and everything smells musty). Those may cost more to restore than they'll ever be worth monetarily. But, my Dad says they belonged to my grandparents [maternal grandmother (RIP 11 years ago) and grandfather, her first husband, who was a professional musician, had his own band and played locally as a second job (RIP for almost 40 years)]. This is the only musical instrument that came to me (my sister got a flute when he died, everything else went to one of my uncles).

I wasn't able to help my parents during two prior cleanouts/moves, and I'm sure that I missed out on tons more stuff over the years. Nothing especially valuable, but I can definitely see how this could turn into a fun hobby!!!

Mike

Pics of the vices, DP and accordions...

It is sad to know folks throw stuff out like this, but its how things are these days. The toro I found on trash day was an easy fix. It was packed full of grass in all of the creases. So I cleaned it all out, removed the cover and cleaned under it. Drained the old oil out and sharpen the blade at the same time. Replace the oil, adjust the self propeller cable, drain old gas, put new gas in tank, shot a few squirts of starting fluid and it fired up with no issues.

I did replace the wheel with a spare wheel i have and removed the clogged old air filter. I'm currently waiting for air filters for 7 lawnmowers thats ready to be sold. Shipping has been a hassle with these air filters.

Classic example of people too stupid or careless to maintain their stuff. Use it until it won't work and then **** can it--and probably call it a POS for failing. :headshake:headshake

Arne73: BTW the cans on top are Vintage decoration.

I've always noticed the variety of small (approx. 1 gallon) gas cans I've seen in estate sale garages over the years unnoticed by other buyers and moldering on the shelf. My father always made sure we had a empty gas can in the trunk in case we ran out on the road, a mindset which appears to have died out today. I agree with Arne73, the old cans are attractive shelf sitters and I have a few on display too.

I've been pretty comms out on here the last two months, what with no sales nearby, a jammed up work-from-home schedule and two jammed garages with no place to put new stuff. So, I've been buying car parts to swap in the LS motor I bought last month. Buying car parts is as much fun as shopping on eBay, just a lot more expensive.

I was committed to not buying any more big stuff until I thinned out what I already have. However, a FB Marketplace ad for a wood shop clean out broke through the resolve and I have an appointment Monday afternoon to see what bargains there are to be had. Hopefully, he'll have sold all the big equipment and there will be nothing available at fire sale prices to start filling an otherwise useable garage bay back here.

Cool! I found a set in mid-January and Lugz showed a set he has. Looks like we'll have to start a club. :)
Looks like Lugz's is probably oldest (no Mill Supply Division) and mine is probably newest. I can't say much about their pouch size standardization over the years unless they cut the length of the keys. I can't find mine at the moment (I'm sure that's an indicator of something...) but I seem to recall my largest key was only about 3 inches long.

Slim pickings for yard sales this year. There was one today, from a guy that buys storage lots and has a perpetual yard sale all summer.

Got these three things for a dollar total.

The gem in the bunch is the chisel. It's a Dastra. Not cheap. Worth three times what a snap-on screwdriver or Klein pliers cost. I have some already. Odd to find one at a yard sale, in the misc. tools box.

That’s a good deal!
I’ll take your word on the relative value of Dastra chisels, but if I was turning screws or stripping pigtails, and not hollowing out a mortise, I’m not sure I’d agree.
Undervalued tools do show up in bargain bins, which is of course why we look for them there.
Good eyes spotting them, and lucky you to have any sales happening within reach!

Saw a couple of estates sales coming in the area tomorrow. I won't be anywhere near them.

Woo Hoo! what looks like a good estate sale a bit down the road. No pics, but I don't have anything elsw better to do.

I just hope that anyone going to a sale or flea is EXTREMELY careful. I like going to sales as much as anyone, but old tools just aren’t worth the risk.
