Hit a local garage sale today that advertised "Tools, Car Parts, Car Accessories". Was posted on FB Market. When I asked what type of tools I was told, "Dad was Auto body mechanic, cleaning out garage". When I got there today they also told me this wasn't the first sale they had. So it was definitely to my surprise to find a very clean Wilton Bullet sitting on top of a tool chest (there were a few tool chests in there). It's newer than the vintage ones usually posted here. I haven't confirmed this yet but I believe the number stamped on the slide key is the date of manufacture like the old ones: 594. So May 1994? The owner had passed away. A friend was pricing the tool sale. He said the vise had never been used.

I also picked up a SK tool chest top, also in excellent condition for $30. I didn't even realize it had the removable tray like a tool box until I opened it up at home....lol.

Oh, the Wilton cost me $40 :)

I feel like I’m getting behind in my postings—yesterday I had a great day but haven’t posted these finds from Wednesday:

The sale was an hour south of San Antonio and boasted a lot of rusty gold including a Peter Wright anvil that looked in excellent condition and a couple of small vises. They only let six people in the garage and I didn’t make it in the first scrum. Two of us were standing in the #7 position and we did rock/paper/scissors for the honors and I won. :bounce:

The anvil was bought immediately in the first group. The vises turned out to be an off-shore Craftsman and a no-name for more cash than I wanted to part with.

I saw the Armstrong box but when I opened it, none of the contents were Armstrong. Then, when I saw all these Armstrong tools individually priced, I asked the guy in charge to let me switch out the current contents for the actual Armstrong items. He wasn’t really gung-ho about the idea but ultimately agreed.

10 Sep 20-1b.jpg10 Sep 20-1d.jpg10 Sep 20-1c.jpg

The Armstrong tools are all from the late 70’s/early 80’s and the box may be also, but I haven’t found any reference to the box or what the 43-243 Tool Set might have included. This is what is pictured (everything is 3/8dr):

Metric sockets from 38-119 to 38-109 (19mm-09mm)

11-903 Ratchet

11-916 Flex Handle

11-922 3” Extension

11-923 6” Extension

11-938 Sliding T

11-947 Universal Joint

It appears the box itself was taken apart and the bottom was spray bombed silver while the top look like it retains the remnants of a dark greenish paint. With the way the handle is secured to the box, I’m unsure if it is original.

Included in the deal was a J.H. Williams S-51 Superratchet

Two Williams ½dr ST-824 ¾” 8pt sockets—both had a coat of yellow latex paint over a coat of orange oil based paint. Only the double groves hinted at Williams manufacture.

Proto Professional 5240 slotted screwdriver bit

Proto Professional 5241 #2 Phillips bit

An unmarked all steel 3” square

The square was $1.50, the Williams sockets were $1 each and everything else was $20.

10 Sep 20-1g.jpg10 Sep 20-2a.jpg10 Sep 20-2c.jpg

I went into the house and bought a Resistol straw cowboy hat for $16—it’s Texas! Before leaving, I poked around in the garage again and came up with the Ford wrench ($2) and the three CM =v= Cadmium open ends ($1 each).

Radar,
Nice Armstrong set! Very cool.

Marked axe head but will have to clean to see what it is.
Unknown needle nose maybe telephone pliers
Vise grips (can't remember the OEM)

Well that deserves a "you ****" for both items. I have never seen an SK roll cab top box and SK is so common to find here.

This was a good week. Found a pair of Fastenal units locally and a friend brought down some stuff I had him get for me in Colorado. The SO set is 5/8 drive and has about 12 socket plus one extension and 2 ratchets. One ratchet however was converted to a breaker bar by welding one side of the ratcheting mechanism. I will try to undo that. The pic with the large sockets on the side is the Plomb Empire pile. The sockets are 3/4 drive and go up 2-3/8. The SO plates are for a frame straightening machine. They will now be wall art. The SO ratchet on the plates is 18" and is one of the 5/8 pieces. Some more pics of other stuff tomorrow.

Bwell,
Those are two awesome pick ups. The vice is a steal and the SK tool chest is a gem. Love it.

Don't think I ever earned two "you *****" from one post before; and definitely not from back to back posters. Thanks guys! Feeling like a double rainbow shinning down on me :)

There were more garage sales today than I remember in years, but I somehow only bought two items.

First one was a Suhner mini angle die grinder. I have been thinking about trying my hand at porting a few chainsaws, and this was too perfect timing to pass up. Best part, only paid $7. Looked it up online and they sell for almost $800 on Amazon.
View media item 106602
Second one was something I have been needing for years. It was new in box, $15. I had to ask her twice to make sure she wasn't saying something else.

Installed it as soon as I got home.
View media item 106603
Not a bad haul for a total spent of $22.

You **** for that grinder! Awesome find.. Not too shabby on the opener either

I agree with Old Radar. But IMHO, b.well ***** the most.
An N.O.S. 4 inch Wilton bullet for $40 ???? Incredible. Even more so is knowing that it wasn’t the first day of the sale and that it was right out in the open sitting on top of a tool box. You could throw that on eBay and get 10X your money.

B.well inhales profusely.

Pelletman scores!

That’s a York vise, which are high quality, but what is that unusual woodworking vise? Looks like an Emmert turtle back or is it a clone?

If it’s genuine, I sense some impending negative pressure building up. :)
Lots of that going on around here lately.

I did mine. The power supply died, and I gambled the main board was out, so upgraded to Bluetooth at the same time. It is fairly easy to do with the kit from UK, watch their videos. Sounds great afterward.

Nice find, I never knew Craftsman E series wrenches existed until now. I already knew the "E" was NHT/Stanley and after further research I determined that E series wrenches look most like Husky wrenches made of that era since NHT and later Stanley owned them. Now I've got to add E series to my wrench history articles.

Shiftless, that’s not an “if”! Pelletman *****! - talk about “stepping up my game,” as he said earlier. I hope you have enough cars for all the deals!

That sure looks like the genuine Emmert, maybe a #2, though? I’m not getting a sense of its real size. The #1 is around 87lb. Only thing I can read on the cover is “Made in USA”.

Great site with type study, tips for restoration and mounting, plus a page of links on other pattern-makers vise manufacturers HERE.

I'll take better pics today and get whatever info is on it, but yeah it is an Emmert. I don't know these that well, have to figure out what is missing, I was reading that site last night, thanks!

Yes I was actually going to PM you about them because I noticed they weren’t on your list but couldn’t get the pictures to go on the PM.

Rain dampened the flea market activity. Still a couple smalls:
2 seamers $5 total.
Husky CB 51 3/8” drive breaker bar, Husky CS 24 1/2” extension, and Warner putty knife $5 total.
P&C 544 flat screwdriver and Sears Craftsman hacksaw $3 total.

SWMBO and I went back to the sale up the road this morning and scrounged through the piles for some more stuff. She found a snowman decorative pillow that the lady running the place was thrilled was going to someone who appreciated it as much as she did.

While SWMBO was charming the hosts, I picked out the decent Vicegrips from the tray of locking pliers and then made a set of metric combo wrenches from the tray of individually priced combos (yes, every wrench had it's own price tag) and two other wrenches. I carried them out and asked for a bundled price from the about $35 total from the tags, and I got 'em for $25. SWMBO's goodies, including the pillow, were another $12.

Here are the tools:

Two 10" Visegrips, a CR and an R
One 9" long nose Visegrip, 9LN
Three 7" Visegrips, a WR , a CR and an R
One 5" Visegrip, a WR

A 10mm-14mm run of Crftsman combo wrenches--one is a =V=, the rest are newer
Craftsman 1/2" - 9/16" DBE, =V=
Crescent double ended 6"-8" adjustable wrench
A teeny little Bonney E40A 12-pt DBE, sizes 3/16" x 7/32"--I scrounged around in the box for more tiny Bonneys, but this was the only one.

One of those weird but memorable trips (Lugz 2020_37) to the flea market this morning.

Scattered showers and I almost didn't go. When I parked, people were running to their cars and vendors were covering up with tarps. While waiting it out, I reached for my phone to catch up on GJ, and discovered that I forgot my reading glasses! Cannot see a dang thing up close without them. So I get out, in a shower, and head to the first vendor to see if he has any I can buy cheap.

Vic is Born Again (but not more pushy about it than a hand-made cardboard placard he always has out), a burn victim, heck of a nice guy, one of the low end scramblers among the house liquidators. No glasses, but sitting right there on a table is the partial Tona set. Made in Czechoslovakia. Now, I'm not a big Eastern Bloc/Warsaw Pact collector, but that's where my maternal and paternal grandparents all hailed from, before it was known as that, when it was still part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. I've known of Tona, but I have never seen any. Automatic purchase.

The tap handle was also automatic for a different reason. I hadn't bought anything from that vendor, known far and wide in NJ flea market circles as Sugarbush, in a long time. He's a character. He has a nickname for everyone and he will bust your chops, loudly, but in a funny way, if you look at something, and don't buy it, for whatever reason, no matter what it is, but especially if it's something to do with year or brand or type or finish or whatever else makes it not quite right as a collector. No markings, and one of the wingnuts has been replaced, but the grain on the handles is gorgeous. I normally don't like to talk about prices (no offense to those who do!), but in this case I don't mind saying I probably overpaid and was glad to at $10, because we were both happy that I finally saw something worth buying from him. He doesn't have to chastise me for being being a picky picker and I don't to have to hear it! For awhile, anyway.

I normally wouldn't even comment on an old book, this one, a classic humor piece, published in 1915, but the cover actually is tool-related, in a humorous way! :)

That's a nice find and a USUCK price! The finish looks good in the pics too!

Don't over drive them with an overly powerful amp they weren't designed for Hi power amps,

If the woofers show the surrounds deteriorating, (assuming foam surrounds) there are kits for that.

I had an enjoyable tool hunting weekend. Nothing vintage except for the long C DOEs and the WF Plvmb swivels but I’m happy. Oh and the Walden 1110 connector. The Fluke doesn’t power up but I’ve had success repairing two of these previously. I left with $80 and came back home with $26.IMG_2824.jpg

Dang, he’s making us do math. Practicing your home schooling on us? And the answer happened to equal his post count.

I tried a few sales over the weekend and mostly struck out. At he last one, I bought a 5 dollar box of stuff just to get on the board. Some neat stuff in it. A Walden box and spinner, proto spinner, craftsman USA 1/4” and 3/8” sockets, craftsman hack saw, Vaughn pry bar, perfect handle screwdriver and a couple of “handy hex” s wrenches. And an A. Plomb dbe.
