I just spotted the screw and stovebolt carousel that wrenchguy picked up recently. Wow!!! That is super cool! Does it still rotate? I think I agree with Lugz, that it's gonna take something to top that as coolest find of 2020.

For those who don't like to venture too far from the motherthread, here are some teaser shots of my finds from this morning after clean-up. For those who do, many more photos and info on the Vintage Board in Blackhawk, Bonney, Hinsdale, Schollhorn, and Williams threads, as well as a thread I started for the priceless 60's era Shelton bit set. I'm not going to bombard you guys with waterproof radio bag photos, but there it is all strapped up for use in Pic 7.

Lugz- did you post the radio bag anywhere? I used to actually have one of those but didn’t know what it was for. Are those particularly valuable?

That Shelton set looks like it was was opened on Christmas morning and somehow got put away with the decorations for fifty years.
Nice Hinsdale set, too.

I went to an estate sale today. It was run by a professional outfit, and the prices were very high. They wanted $80.00 for a pair of used welding gloves! A man was trying to dicker on the price, and they insisted that they had researched the price and it was reasonable. After he left, my wife informed them that I had bought a pair like them (actually, they were identical) for $12.00 brand new a month ago, so they went back on the internet and discovered that the price they were using was for a dozen new gloves. They repriced them to $6.00, but it was too late for the potential buyer.

I did find three items that were reasonable, shown in photo #1:

KD TOOLS 2264 bearing splitter

Kent-Moore KMO-326A, 41-W-1495-100 "FUEL AND WATER PUMP" 1/2" DBE special wrench for GMC and Gray Marine diesel engines.

J W Harris "Safety-Silv 45" 1/16" silver alloy solder. 3 Troy oz. of .45 silver.

Total cost was $14.00.

Thanks. I am really loving the Hinsdale. And yes, except for a few negligible scratches and blemishes on the lid of the case, the Shelton Socketool set is pretty mint-y.

To the right person, yes. Particularly someone with an SCR-593 radio and no waterproof bag to put it in! I always pick up Signal Corps accessories for that reason. The SCR-593 was used in White Scout Cars, Antiaircraft Battalion and Battery HQs, and Searchlight and Automatic Weapons Platoons. I'm not sure what the Navy was using them for, maybe the Marines, but this one has a Navy contract number on it. (I always thought the ammo and petroleum companies cleaned up in WWII. U.S. Rubber had 25 plants and $1.5B in contracts!)

I normally don't like to bogart the thread with militaria, but here are some pics. All that excess rubberized canvass at the top, under the "lid", gets folded up, to seal up the radio inside, and then the lid gets strapped down on the front and both sides.

The estate sale off 50th up the hill from Dallas Glass. Right on Bonnie Court, all the way to the end. Some Proto post 1960 stuff, Challenger, Craftsman -V-, but all priced like it was Snap-On. Advertised on Salem CL.

Thank you Jock!

So, on Wednesday I spotted an unlisted sale on the way back from taking the cat to the vet. Stopped in, and it was an old mechanic having a retirement sale. Not much I was interested, but I found the following

Walden ratchet, Proto long 1/2, Plomb valve adjuster and a WF 9/32 extension.

And today stopped at an estate sale, three garage sales and three Restores.

Plomb t-handle, parti colored Plomb obstruction wrench, Challenger 1/4 socket, Diamond hose clamp pliers, and a socket box, which contains

Most of a Wizard socket set, along with SK and Plomb extensions. I also picked up a book at the estate sale

pelletman You surely **** on those socket sets for $10 each! That 3/4" Craftsman set might be the same one I have. I think I'm missing a socket or two so I'd be interested to know what sockets are in that set if/when you have the time.

Thanks! I will try to take a gander at them. I'm probably not gonna be inclined to remove them from the set though

Hit a number of thrift stores yesterday, came back with the following:
Milwaukee 222 drill $9 and a Mikita locking bit driver $5 with a fold out torque handle and case:a7ac470b5f2ff5b1a217ebea48d243a2.jpg
78c3987d7dbc53aa89d969bfa7bc4a1b.jpg
1956 Coleman dual mantle lantern, likely a 220, in great condition with minimal rust $25
9fea805b590529fd2467390e5bd13b27.jpg
Splitting wedge by Warren-Teed $5 plus 3 Sandvik Swedish bow saw blades $1
12e779c1142e1d970f2079dc15f1bb5a.jpg
3 garden tools (transfer shovel, cultivator, border fork) $5 each plus a box of misc tools in toolbox that they dumped in a corrugated box for me. Unfortunately they took out the 3/8 Indestro socket set that caught my eye as they “needed it” but gave the rest for $25

What’s in the box? Let’s see:

Box contents laid out:

Just some quality America steel such as P&C (1/4” socket set), Proto, Indestro, Thorsen, General Tool, SK Wayne, Channelock, Diamalloy, original Vise-Grips, old (USA) Stanley and more.
Also found a used set of dolly wheels $6 with metal hubs and bearings to replace a cheap plastic wheel which snapped under a heavy load.16d60d329bcd03a7088d5cf4fe936a4c.jpg1c6249e9874d6d4115730588226ba58c.jpg
But that’s not all, found a wooden box full of upholstery (?)/ leathery/vinyl work tools for $17. Just the brushes and long shears alone were worth it.

One man’s trash is another’s treasure. All and all some good pickins after not getting out in a while.

bmw, nice find on the Wizard set. Do you want me to put your name on the ratchet that goes with that set?

bargainhuntingking, I like that P&C set. You should show it in the P&C thread!

BMW, anything by Jack O'Connor is worth picking up, nice snag!

Provincial, that water pump wrench with the integral FSN is nice! Is it 1/2" on both ends?

BHK, is that box with the long scissors for hanging wallpaper?

Lugz, I wonder how many of those demo tools I've walked right past, without recognizing what they were? Thanks for pointing that out.

I have a Bonney version, no FSN, marked Gray Marine. They were used on Detroit and Gray Marine 6-71 diesels. I'm thinking of asking Jock for a trade, but I don't want to give up the Bonney in return! Haha.

No problem. Yeah, they kinda sorta look like plain old phone company crimpers if you don't take notice of the spike or the flat tip screwdriver blade on the ends of the handle. And not all of them have the big martial "U.S." on it like Schollhorns do. It's funny. That simple do it all tool is all they had in many cases in WWII. Today they've got these big fat expensive porcupine looking Gerber tools.

Is that a dual SAE/metric crescent wrench? Versatile! ;) Nice score on the SK spinner set. Want to trade it for a wallpapering box (see above)? Hee...hee..

Haha, the wrench is a diamond horshoe 4" & 6" when I seen it was marked 5 bucks I got pretty excited. The SK box was marked 8 bucks and I wasn't really interested. The owner kept repeating how much he dislikes SK so I picked it up and offered 5.
I seen your wallpaper box.... thats a ... um.... nice box lol

Jokes aside, my Diamalloy adjustable wrenches are the best...very tight tolerances. You scored some suckage on both for $10 .

I picked up a Cresent 10-12 a few years ago. A friend here on GJ said he had always wanted one. So the next time I sent him something I slipped it in. He was ecstatic.

That is a wallpapering set, I still have that damn brush somewhere.

Wallpapering box you say? Never would have guessed. Is that even done anymore?

I got an antique wallpapering table from my Dad this year, used it several times over the years. Turns out, it belonged to his grandfather!

Came with a brush and a couple of tools, nothing like that nice setup you found!

Timed it right and was first to respond to this post for a free drill press and broken band saw. The drill press while random Taiwan harbor freight grade works perfectly.

I’ve wanted a bandsaw for awhile for my garage. The guy said one day this one would no longer tension the blade and they pushed it aside and bought a new one. It’s a Grizzly G0555 which luckily is still in production. All it needed was a $5 tensioning bolt and $1 square nut. I threw some new tires at it for the heck of it and of course a new blade. All things aside, they are offshore but this is a seriously quality piece and the fact that they fully support their products selling individual hardware not entire assemblies in this day and age is fantastic.

One of my uncles worked at Grizzly when they had a facility in Muncy PA. He insisted that Grizzly products differed from other import fare because they were subjected to far more stringent quality control. I’ve had no cause to doubt him.
I miss that sales floor. Used to take the kids in to see the trout pond while I handled equipment I still don’t have space for.

Strange how buying garbage begets buying more garbage, but who am I to question destiny?

Hit an estate sale in a thrift store and scored some old geezers throw outs:

The box of useful nostalgia and high collared shovel totaled $48
44668b0b4b2aa27b73a83654ff08c05c.jpg
37433799e4d029ce97d4e2f9ac513aef.jpgfcba5c7bb4e439f7ed4f5685f2671d52.jpg7cb8ea1e4fe902b5f062bdf10f6377b6.jpgcf88d40f55f3bea5c418a2b65310219c.jpge231ff0602f79ede9069aa3ab7f008d3.jpg

Particularly good deals were the $1 full 16.5oz cans of Kroil, the $5 Pelican box, and the old all metal $5 Craftsman variable speed drill.

Bad deals were the cheap kerosene lamp for $5 (I think they retail for less but hey the fount was full!) and the no name _plastic_ level for $2, probably free at Harbor Freight. But one in the hand is worth more than a drive to Walmart, and I’ll get good use out of both.

The pricey $10 gem of the lot was a 1917 US Army War Dept. guide to field artillery for NCOs heading off to WWI trench warfare. Wow!!!!

BHK - cool books!
For any who don’t know, Vardis Fisher wrote one of the accounts of the real-life man that became Jeremiah Johnson in Sydney Pollack’s 1972 film starring Robert Redford.
I spotted this plaque while traveling in Idaho w MrsLS a couple summers ago.

Thanks for that info on Vardis Fisher LesserSon! I’ve always wanted to kayak the Snake! One day...

Here are some other books that I picked up this week at Habitat for a quarter (!) each. Seems criminal that such knowledge sells for so little. Perhaps reading is old fashioned? 486dc62f9f2ee7d7513d3e8fe29ac950.jpg

BHK, you, (and the others) got a LOT of stuff posted today! My CL page for today was blank...

If that 220 has a clean vent with no chips, worth the 25 for sure. if the original globe, a steal of a deal! (I bought a 220 last weekend JUST to get the globe...)

Cool books too! And yes, today its chic to dump all those dusty books... Not me or my family!

Sadly, the book industry has been dying for decades. It is were I got my first real job, and did a pretty severe apprentice ship in the used book trade. But, even all those years ago, I couldn't pay all my bills and went over to logistics, although I have kept my hand in at all times.

I show some of the books I pick up at thrift stores, garage sales and whatnot. It is fun and people seem to like it. Along with early 20th century fiction and travel, I love old technical books.

No estate sales worth going to today but late yesterday a vise popped up on CL. I called the fellow who I had talked to a few weeks back about a 4.5" Rock Island Birtman vise. Anyway, I made arrangements to make the drive this morning to go look at another vise he was selling. Brought it home and have started cleaning it up. I noticed right off that the screws on the front spindle had a nut on each of them. It didn't hit me that the front washer is missing. Hopefully, that isn't a high dollar item from Wilton (but likely it is). It should clean up nice. I'm actually gonna paint this one. Will be my first painted vise.
