I haven’t been buying much because I’m cleaning out my garage to turn it into a bedroom. But I’m also building a new 36x24 garage. So I’ve been trying to bring everything into my basement and a storage container. Then the other day, I hop on Facebook for the first time and the first listing was a porter cable belt grinder. I don’t have a truck anymore so I was debating weather to message the seller or not. It was only up for 20min or so. He said it was available and I asked if he would deliver it. He agreed for a small fee. Then I also saw his other listings and made a deal. Got the belt grinder, a delta bench grinder in a craftsman pedestal stand, and the guy threw in a south bend carriage apron. He brought it all to my house for a total of $200. This belt grinder is a beast. I can’t wait to fire it up tomorrow. It was too late tonight after I struggled getting it bolted on to the stand.

Mine has quick release! Since the heads are identical someone must have put a qr kit in it at some point ? A new kit is sure cheaper than a craftsman flex head

Hit three sales today with low expectations but picked up some interesting items.

All three were in the country north of San Antonio. The first stop was the second day of that sale and I had hoped that a display model of the B-52 would still be available. It was not. The only other thing of interest was a Craftsman Long C Deep socket-25/32". Because of my disappointment about the B-52, the nice lady gave me the socket!

I'll jump ahead to the third sale because I bought nothing there. They had a lot of tools but about 95% were Asian and they were priced hilariously high. The worst part was they had rusty tool boxes containing random mismatched tools that they wanted $40-$50 apiece for and would not condone picking a particular tool out of the "sets".

The only sale where I actually bought some things was a farm out on a gravel road. Most things were carpentry related--saws and wood planes--none were collectable but the planes went fast anyway. Most tools were in one of the outbuildings but after culling those, I found the Challenger set in a shed with gardening supplies. The set is 3/8 drive but it also had five 1/4" sockets along with a fist full of Allen wrenches so I went back to the tool outbuilding and dug through the screw driver pile and came up the the Challenger 1/4" spinner for the win! The plastic case is very brittle from age and exposure and the sockets seem original although I haven't found a catalog that shows what drive tools it might have contained. The 1961 catalog on archive.org has metal cases and the sockets are depicted with a single line where mine have no lines or knurling. Also everything is marked only as Challenger--no Penens or Proto.

Other items: (Second photo is after a little sprucing up)
Stanley 5590 Long ratcheting tap wrench--of course no cross bar. Marked W.Germany 9.73
S-K 42470
New Britain NS 25 1/2dr 10" ext
New Britain P-80 Hose Clamp Pliers
The Craftsman Tool Co. Conneaut, Ohio 12" spring loaded self adjusting pipe wrench. Pat 870,781, 12 Nov 1907 (happy b-day!)
J.P. Danielson 6" adjustable, code C-5-9
Crestaloy 4" adjustable
Ford M-40 wrench
A CM deep -v- that was in the Challenger box
The free CM Long C deep
A Spoetzl Brewery (Shiner Beer) opener
A Hercules & Co. screw driver Now identified as Whitman and Barnes W&B
J.H.Williams female drive F-50. Both the catalogs and AA show the F-50 as a 3/8" drive ratchet. Mine is the same length as the 3/8, but it's a 1/4" drive. What's the deal?

Hey all this is my first post, I've gotten into buying tools at local estate sales and that's how I made my way to this board. I've really learned a lot from the posts here so thank you.

I've been very excited about today's find, the 3/8" SK socket set is almost complete, and the various other sockets are Herbrand, SK, and Snap On. There were quite a few International Harvester 1/4" and 3/8" sockets left behind, I kind of wish I bought them now. The 1/4" breaker bar is a Proto, and the Crescent needle nose pliers have been needed in my garage for a while.

Best part of this buy was the price, I had tested out how much they were looking for on the SK set, and when he said $3 I knew I'd be buying a lot. $7 took this whole lot, I was very content.

The Belden crimp pliers are one of the most solid tools I've ever held, I can't find much info on the company, so if there is a place I could read more about these pliers, I'd be interested.

As a sound tech for 40 years or so, I have slung a lot of Belden cable, but have never seen their tools. What do I know? ,,,

Here is similar on the bay:

Had two planned stops today, the first one being an estate on a farm. That one interested me the most, as the company running it often has insanely good pricing, and the pictures looked interesting. Well, there were tools, but just homeowner type stuff of fairly low quality and long use. Not much else there was interesting unless you were a duck hunter or into old kids' toys. But on the way to the second stop, a spy a TOO of a shop sale. Here I picked up the following;

A tote full of misc. US sockets - Snap-on overstrikes, Proto and SK mostly, with a few others, and a new in box Starrett hole attachment. $20.

And the final sale looked to have an interesting assortment of things, but I really dislike the company running, usually, their prices on tools and such are way too high, and they think too highly of themselves. But, to my surprise, the prices on tools were laughably low like they had no idea what they were trying to move along.

Machinerys handbook in a Gerstner drawer (there were a few of the drawers laying around, but no body for the chest.) Three mill jacks, set of Herbrand tappet wrenches, Starrett 289 (for attaching two rules at right angles) a Browning frictionless 1/4 driver, along with misc. including a Willings drive adaptor for a Refer ratchet. All that for $12.

Nice finds guys.

Old Radar- you have an F-50A ratchet. They snuck that A in there.

BMW- nice find on the Browning. I don’t recall seeing that model. Usually see a long shank 3/8 that is a bit different plastic handle.

Mdfergus- Welcome. Is that a New Britain ratchet in there? Might be worth going back for the IH sockets if possible.

Old Radar: Not sure that I knew long (or ratcheting) taps existed. Not to mention spring-loaded self-adjusting pipe wrenches. Nice finds.

Mdfergus, welcome. Nice find on the Belden crimpers, and a You **** price out of the gate!

The Craftsman Tool Co. Conneaut, Ohio 12" spring loaded self adjusting pipe wrench. Pat 870,781, 12 Nov 1907
Not the company that Sears, Roebuck & Company paid $500 for the rights to the Craftsman name, if you're wondering, which was Marion-Craftsman, in Marion, Indiana. The Craftsman Tool Company in Conneaut, Ohio, ill-fatefully changed their name to Craftool in 1925, missing out on the big Sears windfall.

Also, if you're not from that part of the country (my dad's side of the family hails from Fairport Harbor, Ohio), that's CONNIE-yacht, not con-KNOW. It may have been settled by French, but the pronunciation did not follow. :)

Those are not easy to find. They came in various lengths, too, like most pipe wrenches. Other examples have been posted here on GJ before, but not too many. Still hoping to run into one in the wild. Please post it in my Oddfellows thread.

They've shown up before, but pretty rare. And everybody drools over the cool grip and how robust they are. Nice find. Probably 1930's or 40's. Consensus was the huge electrical wire company, as 3jakes alludes to, but I don't recall that we ever figured out the OEM. Google Belden Manufacturing, Chicago (original location), or Richmond, Indiana.

Fair amount of suckage in these finds! The Proto sockets, machinist jacks and the browning handle! You ****!

I headed down to Jake’s flea today, but it was only about half-strength.
I poked around and overspent $11 on stuff I would not buy on a better day.

My biggest mistake was showing interest in the (modified) made in USA Nicholson #49 cabinet rasp. His prices were otherwise reasonable, and we had a good conversation, so I shrugged and kept it.

Vixen file on unidentified holder.
Duro 5/8x3/4 stubby DBE.
Stanley 404 miter clamp.
Wet-area electric box.

The pliers...
CS Osborne & Co Cast Steel - I think user-modified, but not sure what the mod would help with.
Proto Los Angeles slipjoints with “feather” grip pattern.

No time to hit any sales but as I’m walking the dog I see a straight shaft string trimmer on the curb, take a look it’s a RedMax, I have one and have a friend that’s a dealer so pick it up and bring it home, worse case is it’s parts.
b76229fb58498c1b49d0c6b466107198.jpg
Pulls a little hard, remove air filter and plug, pulls easy, got spark, reinstall plug and give it a couple of pulls and fires right up.
Actually started easier than mine usually does.
Haft temped to ask the guy if he replaced it and if he wants it back.
Score!

Had a fun day today. Flea market and then a family run barn/estate sale this morning.

The barn sale was loaded. A picker sale, lots of rusty or greasy stuff, and antiques. A nice old timer, he sold off his property in the country and letting things go. It seemed like most hand tools were cordoned off and NFS, except for select antique tools. Lots of antiques as well. I may go back as I was pressed for time and there was a lot to dig through.

Funny thing, there was a nice looking mother daughter combo of the cute country variety shopping there. They seemed like seasoned pickers to me, whispering to each other. The daughter and I had a brief conversation about some items she found. A few minutes later as I’m taking a last walk around the shop, I hear “That’s a big wrench!”. I look over to see her closing a very long metal OTC case that I’d totally missed. I said “That’s probably a torque wrench”, as in 3/4” or 1” drive. I paused a couple moments thinking she’ll walk away from it, but nope. She straddled the darn thing while I stood there like an idiot as she whipped out her phone to take a picture of the label and look it up. I just wanted to see what type of wrench, but didn’t have time to wait around, and she literally had the thing between her legs over a pile of junk. Hard not to dig a chick like that, in fact, if I were single I would have considered canceling my barber appointment to chat about Owatonna Tool Company.

Here are my finds from the barn sale.

The first thing to catch my eye was an open socket box on a table. TRUTH 3/4” drive. :) Marked Mankato. Great shape other than having gotten wet and rusty. Also a Walden socket and weathered Proto ext. in there.

Some misc. tools and items. Some I haven’t fully examined yet.

Montgomery Ward cobbler’s hamer, Master oil spout, a neat brass hook, old German twist wrench, Walden looped socket wrench, old brass Stant cap, mystery items and goggles.

attachment.php

Husky and Duro 1/2” ratchets, Mossberg wrench, Proto LA pipe wrench, Matchless screwdriver. Plomb, Bonney, Snap On sockets. Unknown chisel, and if Private Lugnuts sees this, a BMCo brace bit.

Klein wire tool, Case Plow wrench, and an old crate type multi tool that I can’t read the name yet.

Cool Stuff 3Bay! I believe the triple hook is from a steamer trunk.

I went to one Estate sale - Masks required, no entry without your temp taken, Use hand sanitizer or gloves, limiting the number of people and then one out, one in..

and the line was bumper to bumper, NO attempt to social distance!... :wtf:

I went home, I may try again an hour before closing...

To the flea finds.

I promise you guys, especially Don, that I don’t collect Barcalo. That’s why it’s only a Barcalo factory Seconds stamped wrench, an unmarked Barcalo that no one ever knows is Barcalo, and Mastercraft contract... by Barcalo.

Today I must have been on an old wrench bender, pun intended. A little of everything. US, German, British. I fished out some Snap On items, a Handee wrench set from Jamestown Ny, a neat old Bog socket wrench with the knurled handle. The Dasco is different. Elora, Britool, Garrington,Billings, Williams, Indestro, Plomb, Bonney, Thorsen, Herbrand, Fairmount, Mastercraft, Barcalo, Wright, Craftsman, Champion Plug ratchet, Ace screwdrivers.

Even an old Cadillac wrench. I was scratching my head trying to read the thing. I thought it had the name Ed something engraved on it.

I haven’t yet figured out what the nice Snap On handle with threaded end is.

Thanks Outlaw!

Two more finds.

At the flea, a nice old lady was set up there. I saw a small cheap import cast iron pan, picked it up and flipped it over anyway out if habit, knowing it was nothing special. The lady tells me there’s a Griswold over there if you’re interested. I was like yeah, absolutely. There, buried under other items on her table was a No. 3.

She tells me $5. SOLD!, I said. She goes, I thought you might like that Griswold.

Also, my streak of road find tools continues (see appropriate thread). I almost ran over this open knife just down the road from the barn sale. I backed up and hopped out to see what is this red object is in the middle of a country road. Hmmm, Milwaukee. It has been run over, but works great.

3 bay, the threaded SO handle - 1/2" fine? if so likely setup to take a drill chuck. stick a chamfuring tool in it and its a hole deburing tool. Handy for other things depending on what is in the chuck.

Great finds but I think the Griswold is the prize. that's a USuck for $5.

To the flea finds.

I promise you guys, especially Don, that I don’t collect Barcalo. That’s why it’s only a Barcalo factory Seconds stamped wrench, an unmarked Barcalo that no one ever knows is Barcalo, and Mastercraft contract... by Barcalo.

I haven’t yet figured out what the nice Snap On handle with threaded end is.

I think the Snap-on is half of a chisel/punch holder. That sounds like a lot of Barcalo to me. I found one on my own today. Not a big one though.

My not terribly exciting haul. A couple of knives, Gerber, Buck and Camillus 1973. A tiny cast iron pan marked 3 and 4D, and a black Bose Sound Dock, needing a board. Parts on order, it'll be up and running well in a week.

The guy with the knives had a bunch of tools, but mostly 2nd tier stuff at 1st tier prices.

Seemed like a good time to jump in right behind 3bay, for some reason. (dang, too slow getting pix and info together.)

There was a Craigslist advertised sale from 11:00 to 1:00 today in Berkeley so we checked it out since it was about 10 minutes from home. It wasn’t too crowded and the lady kept bringing boxes out in the back yard behind the garage for us to look through. Plenty of Craftsman and we found all of the pieces that made up a
-V- 3/8” metric deep set including the holder. I paid a fifth as much for the tools as I’m going to have to pay for the damn Berkeley parking ticket.:shocking:

Thanks for the suckage. I don't know on the bolt size.

Nice find. The stud portion seems larger than a punch holder. That was my second guess as well, after ruling out air chuck handle. The thing is solid.

I have one of them somewhere. I couldn’t find a picture of it but it looks like yours. The picture is off the Internet.

3Bay, you take the prize for quantity today!

Also, 3Bay, good eye on the Williams F-50A! Thanks! I didn't notice it until I was going to take a picture to dispute you! So I assume the 'A' indicates they put a 1/4 drive into a 3/8 body--is that accurate? Is there any reference for that?

Tin medic alerted me this morning to a sale I hadn't seen. It was over an hour away, but looked like another honey hole on the estates.net site. Mrs. Radar and my wanna-be garage dog jumped in the car and we made the trek. Turns out a sleuth of local bears helped themselves to most of the honey. All I came away with was three CM =v= speeders 1/2, 3/8 & 1/4 and a couple of sockets. $9. Plus about $20 in gas--oh well, you can't be Winnie the Pooh every time.

You **** sir! $5 for a Griswold? In any condition, love cast iron pans, never a need to replace them and when they're right as good as any nonstick!
I found a nice pair of Milaukee tin snips a couple weeks ago in the road, outside bend of a corner, clean as a whistle.

Yeah, the whole time my wife worked at Cal, she must have gotten a parking ticket a week. And yes, I do know how much that cost.

I want to find one of those mini # indexes. I had a round "stand" missing its cover, and only about 1/2 full...

Lots of good finds going on this late in the season!

I went back to the estate sale, and the lines on idjots was gone.

Pretty picked over of course. the "Big Vise" advertised (but not shown) was gone. as were a couple of boxes of 50's ornaments I get when the happen to appear (if not stupid $$).

This is what I picked up:

A segment if light rail, Coca Cola "branded" cards, an old mouse trap, Channellock 420's, and most of a "Homeowners" set of Indestro sockets with a driver and extension. box is missing the lid.

And a Coleman 413C - My first 413. I have several of the smaller 425 series and there were two of those there one with most of the box still present, but I don't need more of those... This one seems pretty clean!

I also went back to a sale today, the surprisingly good one from yesterday. I was my first of two stops, but the second one only yielded some 10-32 nuts and screws. But, here is what I picked up on half-price day:

A very early Dremel (which I needed for the early set) the nuts and screws mentioned, a Starrett dial indicator holder, two Williams wrenches, Williams ignition pliers, Bog speeder (I paid too much for this), a Starrett gauge, Snap-on socket, Williams driver, and a Hallowell Allen driver. Also, I could not pass up this box:
20201114_172903 by
And I cannot believe that someone left this hanging on the wall (it was only a buck!)

A Starrett tap and drill chart. All of that from both stops cost $13.
