Oh **** ...I thought I got the "set" if they make 1" did they also make 13/16",7/8", 15/16"?
Well depending on what “set” you are trying to complete, yours is either complete or you just need to find the remaining ones that were sold individually apart from the set or were part of a larger set. Regardless, you did well!

Lugz, assume the item circled in red is your mystery driver. I may well be wrong, but it sure reminds me of the handles used aboard Navy ships for casualty power connections. I'm guessing later WW2/post-war, but stand to be corrected on that.

Stowed near hatches, these handles were inserted in a "biscuit" to hold in pig tails of casualty power electrical cables, to extend power to parts of the ship where it had been knocked out. The pig tails were wrapped a specific way so that they could be inserted in the biscuits the correct place, in the dark. Will try to remember to post pics over the weekend :) Didn't see anything on a quick review of my Bluejacket Manual.

Lugz
sorry it took me longer than planned to get an answer on the casualty power handles, for lack of a better term. Here are some pics of some of the handles aboard USS ALABAMA, BB-60, pics taken today. The metal extension looks like it's about 1/4" in width, but that's just from eyeballing it. The ones with the white bulkhead are on display on the tour route; the ones with the red deck background are probably off-tour somewhere. I'm not the photographer, lol. Interesting to see the two different handle colors, but I think the ones on-tour are a dead ringer for your pickup from several weeks ago.

I’d like to trot out the probability that these molds were for forming aluminium racing plates
Well, I'm a little handicapped in knowledge of this area, but odds are good you could be right.

Concur. I'll put it aside if you want it.

We hit a few Tahoe garage sales this morning and found a few things at almost giveaway prices. Here are a few pictures. The plastic drawers of mixed hardware dropped about a third of their contents on the bottom of the trunk, of course. 3EFDBBE3-131F-45D8-AED1-832A453CF878.jpeg

Thanks. I kept looking over the sprayer trying to find something wrong with it but with the original base, compressor and motor I couldn’t say no. It’s filthy but pretty good decal. Guy was at $10 which is super low but I walked him down😂. I was super excited to find that puller in the box. Box is a little beat up but puller looks to maybe been used once and I am trying to find more of these boxes!

Not necessarily from a garage sale, but mom was going through the storage unit and we had to move my grandpa's old tool chest, so I grabbed a few things that I thought were interesting

I don't really know a whole ton about what I got, especially the pipe wrenches, and Ford / Dunlop wrenches. I've seen the Plomb brand a bit on here, but again, know nothing about what they are or what's special about them. The Pliers I thought were pretty interesting because they're Cornwell branded.

Dude, 11/16 saltus! Well done. Now you just need to find that uncommon 1” and you will really be on top of your game

Oh **** ...I thought I got the "set" if they make 1" did they also make 13/16",7/8", 15/16"?
I did a quick search through Craftsman catalogs and unscientifically came to the conclusions that the Saltus wrench or Flex-box wrench first appeared in the 1957 Hand&Power Tool catalog, in 6 sizes: 3/8",1/2",9/16",5/8"and 3/4". The 1" Craftsman Saltus was offered beginning in 1968, disappeared from the catalog by 1975. Never offered 13/16",7/8" or 15/16".

Nice research! I swear those big sizes where ordered at some point but I think that could have been later on? It’s been a while since I researched them. Regardless you got that uncommon 11/16. Nice job!

Yes, like that one😂. Yours is much nicer than mine! I have several of these boxes for pullers, torque wrenches and one socket box. It’s not really common to find the more common socket , wrench, ratchet boxes because they got tossed pretty quickly

I agree “Greatland” or “Great Land” is/was a house brand, or appeared to be so…Target or Walmart, IIRC.
But Greatland Outdoors tents, etc were manufactured by Northpole Ltd, South Korea, according to the web.

Slowish day despite warm weather and LOTS of TOOs (TOOs saved the day - the "planned "stops were not great)

A TOO Estat sale? :dunno: $3 for the box (unbranded) and a buck for the Coo coo clock - all the bits seem to be there!
ES1 CCClock, Box.jpg

A TOO YS - Disston Hack saw (I love this type frame...) a mini A&W Mug, 50's music. and a big sleeping bag pad: $10 all
Y1 Disston, A&W CDs all 50's.jpg

The pad is a nice big one 6 ft X 27"

Y1 Kelty camp pad.jpg

Plano box, Silver plate Server and a Henkels 8" knife (needs sharpened desperately...

Y2 Henkles Server Plano.jpg

I came Home then and found a late posted Estate sale - Should have given it a pass, as soon as IO walk up the Jerk running it yells from across the lawn at me: "Do you own that?" as I start to look at an old Coke branded Cooler box on a table outside. I don't know who hes talking to adn he yells again. "are you talking to me?" - "Yes! do you one that?" "No I'm looking at it" "Its sold!" "Well MAybe it you had some signs out..."

What an ***! a simple "Excuse me sir, that is sold" would have been fine. And Clarely communicated - No; He expects me to read minds, adn behaves like an idiot - Effing jerk.

So I start to go into the garage, and he stops me again insisting I start in the front door - Again No signs... I can't believe this guy has survived to get any grey hair behaving to people this way...

so inside its mostly a big yawn adn everything is priced at Eprey asking and Antique store pricing - BUT "50% off" day - Yeah right...

I finally get into the garage and its even worse - ****** partial boxes of nails and staples from HF are priced sky high more that buying new.. a set of craftsman sockets for $40 (just the sockets!) $20 on a small BEAT Disston and sons saw. Just incredible

I picked up the ONLY reasonably priced item - a pair of 1944 Klein pliers marked $1 OK...

I go to pay, and that guy (different jerk) says the "1" is a 2... I almost threw them in his face. Complete jackass outfit. Never seen these rude stupid idiots before, and I hope I never do again..

Tek Scope was $50 and looks like it's never been used. The rest of the planned sales were a bust but saw this random "drive by" and he had some nice quality stuff. The Proto wrench roll was $15 and he had a bunch of loose wrenches for $.50 each and I made another Proto ASD set from 8-15mm, a couple CM and a Toyota. SO ratchet screwdriver was $5. The drill bit set is Chicago Latrobe and most bits look unused. They are all Cobalt for $15. The Endoscope was $1 from another sale and the Dremel speed control was $2. Train controller was $5.

Had a pretty good haul over the last two weekends.

On Thurs 9th, my son and I headed out to an estate sale that had some promise. Had spotted a Craftsman 5196 in the pictures, that I was hoping to snag. Unfortunately, others earlier in line had the same idea... Oh well, some you win, some you lose. Found a couple of smalls there. Second stop seemed fairly pricey, but got a set of Parks Tappet bike wrenches (13-18), a couple of CM DBE, and some other small assorted stuff (couple of LPS, some brass rod for the lathe, etc).

Almost didnt go to the last sale, as they had desribed it as a digger/picker sale, which was very unusual for this company. Was close enough to the second stop we went over. SO GLAD we did! Walked out with a paper lid top full of tools for $5, including half a set of =V= sockets in both 1/2 and 3/8 (the larger half of each, SAE), a ratchet repair kit, a creeper seat with saucer casters, and my son got a few things as well. Not sure if getting there earlier would have been helpful, looked barely picked over.

And the coup-de-grace...
As I kept poking thru stuff, I heard someone remarking " look at the size of that motor! Itmust be at least a 2hp, maybe a 3!" Of course, my curiousity was peaked, as a 2hp.motor isnt that large... In a pile by the front, where I had walked past, was a planer that was half disassembled. Looked at the motor, saw a 5hp 1ph motor, Crowntop Craftsman! My eyes almost bugged out when I realized. The frame was the bottom half of a Foley-Belsaw 910. The cutterhead was sitting beside it, and the cover had the price. Once I confirmed it was for the whole thing (and I could get a hand loading), I happily put the lid into the pile. Total price on the machine...$20!!! I will be purting more pictures into the Crowntop thread. Separated the motor, stand, lower half, cutterhead and cover to load everything up.

I did finallly figure out they offered this specific combination from 77-79 (72-73 was when he motor was intrduced by itself, and plaer.was sold without a motor, or a smaller motor was offered). By the 81 catalog, the base of the planer went from CI to sheet metal. Price in catalog was over $1000, before shipping!

In between ferrying parts to the car, was chatting with the guy. They got the keys Tues for this.sale, and the client expected it to be cleaned out by the following Wed. There was a ton of old hardware, probably more money in scrap than what they sold.

On Sat, we headed out for a neighborhood "barn" sale. Usually have stopped hitting neighborhood sales as they arent worth it, but this was "rural" enough, figured we had a good shot. My wife ended up with a Van Gogh peint in professional frame, some milk glass (pitcher, goblets), and some other smalls. Son found a snow sled, backpack and other fun trinkets. And I found a dark purple Dazor magnifying lamp, floor size for only $5! A couple of Star Wars prints, and an archery taregt rounded out the finds for me.

Last Thurs, my son and I headed out to a sale which zi had seen advertised on CL. Lots of description, but no pics. It had been open since Wed, and not sure if there were more treasures there before...
Prices seemed to be all over. a sligjty rusty (but mostly dirty) 3D Remline roller was $5, but a 6d Snap On top (26" drop front) was $125. Poked around and slowly out together a pile. 1/4" Sao extension $1, Starrett Pocket dial gauge was $4, Mac Spraypaint holder was $4, and several .50cent thibgs dug out of a bin (Herbrand Screw starter, Central dial indicator, BB tube, mini hacksaw holder, flashlight, etc). Justrite rag wetter and bottle dispenser were combined for $11. Total, we spent $25 there.

And a shop clock for a $1 was the final purchase for that one.

Busy this weekend, so havent made it out.

Hit 2 Estate sales,1 estate auction where this Union machinist chest comes from. 1 of the sales was a 2nd look at the huge Craftsman sale from a couple days ago. The Craftsman BE socket set is missing the 3/4"(replaced with a ChromeXQuality and the 1" but has 2 ratchets, square insert, speed handle, extensions, tray and box. Wrenches from Plomb that were really clean, Two Proto Los Angeles spinners 1/4" and 3/8" Craftsman combo square and 2 Craftsman Professional screwdrivers. And a late addition a Bonney ignition wrench set in a leatherette case. I left it in the car so it didn't make the group photo.

Guy from last week messaged me and said he found some more of the type of stuff I got at his sale last week so went out to see about making another deal. On the way I ended up stopping at another sale. Spent alot today in the end but got some good stuff.
PXL_20220625_204605213.jpg
PXL_20220625_204626271.jpg
Here's the stuff from the random sale. Bunch of random stuff but I got another old brass hammer and a craftsman hand auger with a set of Dunlap bits with the pouch plus some misc bits along with whatever was in the box(sanding discs by the box too) for $12.
PXL_20220625_205334305.jpg
PXL_20220625_205339896.jpg
PXL_20220625_205352770.jpg
Here's the second sale's lot. Same deal as last time but this time a DeWalt tool bag. Bunch of Craftsman sockets(some misc too) and 2 snap on sockets, some knipex end cutters, par-x 1/4 nut driver, Craftsman 1/2 speed handle, Snap on f720 ratchet with no anvil, craftsman 1/4 round head ratchet, misc vice-grips, and a hoard of wrenches (Thorsten, Napa, duro chrome, USA, Mac, Proto, Snap On, Carlyle, challenger). $84 total so not necessarily the best deal but not bad(I'd imagine the craftsman 36mm and napa 1-1/2 sockets and knipex end cutters are worth a decent portion). Also ignore par-x wrench and keys.

Finally got back to town and my friend that went to the sales with me had gotten a $10 box of random tools at the first sale so we looked through it and he traded me these three pieces(Par-x wrench, craftsman slip joint pliers, and Utica slip joint pliers) for a cold pop at a later date.

One I forgot to post 'cause I left it in the van: A $2 crawdad trap.

I think the Van ate either the Alt belt or the Alt on the way home - I need to "open the hood" (Mid engine...) and see..

Small haul today. First was from my local rust vendor, couple of different items that weren't out last week, 36" one man tree Warranted Superior saw , 15" Crescent, with yellow highlights, Diamond slip joint pliers, Beckley & Ralston adjustable bicycle wrench, silicone hose washers, and a Barcaloy 1/2" combo. Second successful sale, after many misses, was a Brother labeler that can take up to 1" wide tape.

Edit: dang the crescent has the wrong knurl in it. Thought it was just rusted in place. The bicycle wrench cleaned up ok, had so much hardened grease in the teeth it did not move well.

Lots of plants and pots for the wife, not shown

Slowish day despite warm weather and LOTS of TOOs (TOOs saved the day - the "planned "stops were not great)

A TOO Estat sale? :dunno: $3 for the box (unbranded) and a buck for the Coo coo clock - all the bits seem to be there!
ES1 CCClock, Box.jpg

A TOO YS - Disston Hack saw (I love this type frame...) a mini A&W Mug, 50's music. and a big sleeping bag pad: $10 all
Y1 Disston, A&W CDs all 50's.jpg's.jpg

The Kleins:

Man, you're a glutton for punishment. I'd have been gone after being yelled at the second time. Maybe the first.

But before I do that, I saw this Snap On wall cabinet in the booth. Again I have no idea what it's worth but for $140 I'm not really taking a chance unless one of you **** yourself and say, "get it now!" I saw similar ones online but they were for AC specific tool cabinets or some other specific component. This just has wire shelves.

I can't imagine the Nutone timer is original?
That cabinet looks like someone retrofitted a uv goggle/glasses sterilizer into it. We had ones similar at school shops I have worked at. It was something similar to this - https://www.selectsafetysales.com/p...MI5IG1wpnK-AIVjovICh0heACHEAQYAiABEgJWRvD_BwE

Here's my small haul from Thursday. Two Estate Sales and a worthless TOO.
First stop was the 1/4" case full of an eclectic assortment of sockets and drive tools--$2. Added the Oxwall ignition wrenches for another $1. The debossed field on the lid of the case tickles my memory of a manufacturer logo but I just can't bring it up. Can anyone say whose logo fits that depression?

24 Jun 22d.jpg

Thorsen rat with one 3/8d and one 1/4d socket
Two Indestro 8pt sockets
Two Proto LA and one Plomb
Proto LA sliding T (could that chrome head on a Cad shaft be OEM?)
Duro-Chrome 6" ext
Six Craftsman Hex =v= sockets with a 12pt and a BE Hex
Six Oxwall ignition wrenches

24 Jun 22c.jpg

Second stop I picked up the Scherr-Tumico rule with only the protractor attached. The agent said $10 but accepted my counter of $5. Rooting around a while turned up the square as part of the deal. No center finder, but it has the scribe! Can't find any info on the 3033--or even the date Tubular Micrometer Co. merged with Scherr.
The Proto Los Angeles extension, 4" Starrett square (missing the rule) and the two Starrett Mic wrenches were $2.

and now the heartbreaking truth. You will probably spend more to get the rule than you did for the square, or maybe even the day’s haul
BTDT with a combo square, not a double square

Scherr Tumico was either 1941 or 1961, based on this thread.

I found a Tumico ad from 1950, so nothing certain yet.

This video is called ST, but when by name in narrative it’s only Tumico when introduced, 1953.

be wary when getting replacement blades as far as thickness. I've got two Starrett heads ,I thought the PEC 4" blades would work..nope,nada

Tumico is good stuff. Just as good as the Brown & Sharpe and similar brands. Both before and after the merger with Scherr. Because of the tendency for machinist's to upgrade, those starting out in the trade often ended up with the "cast-offs" and that improperly gave the brand an "entry-level" quality reputation.

MrsLS & I headed east and north to Blue Ridge Flea near Saylorsburg PA. Wasn’t what I’d hoped for, but I spent about $20 on a few things.
Long C / Underline Craftsman No6516 carry box missing lift-out tote tray.

0CFDD20D-0829-48DF-9BB0-6C937929E370.jpegEDIT - scrubbed with a toothbrush, then a thinned coat of BLO. The leather handle is undergoing separate rehabilitation.

10 Lennox hacksaw blades. Bonney CV 10” ext and sliding tee, CL3 driver. Unmarked Utica (or Pexto) linesmans. Indestro Super 1/2dr rat w removable plug. Unidentified forged object (UFO), which may fit the hardy hole on my anvil better than the similar one I bought last week. 15/16” 6pt S-O overstrike socket. 2nd pair of 7” BMCo grips this month (also better condition). Vlchek (really?) bicycle wrench and dbe.

UFOs:3D4475DA-B1A8-4539-9392-15155CD53BBE.jpeg
one loose, one too tight. I suppose these are actually cast, so UCOs. Not at all sure this is their intended use. I filed the larger one, so now it fits the better of the two.
