Had a pretty good haul over the last two weekends.
On Thurs 9th, my son and I headed out to an estate sale that had some promise. Had spotted a Craftsman 5196 in the pictures, that I was hoping to snag. Unfortunately, others earlier in line had the same idea... Oh well, some you win, some you lose. Found a couple of smalls there. Second stop seemed fairly pricey, but got a set of Parks Tappet bike wrenches (13-18), a couple of CM DBE, and some other small assorted stuff (couple of LPS, some brass rod for the lathe, etc).
Almost didnt go to the last sale, as they had desribed it as a digger/picker sale, which was very unusual for this company. Was close enough to the second stop we went over. SO GLAD we did! Walked out with a paper lid top full of tools for $5, including half a set of =V= sockets in both 1/2 and 3/8 (the larger half of each, SAE), a ratchet repair kit, a creeper seat with saucer casters, and my son got a few things as well. Not sure if getting there earlier would have been helpful, looked barely picked over.
And the coup-de-grace...
As I kept poking thru stuff, I heard someone remarking " look at the size of that motor! Itmust be at least a 2hp, maybe a 3!" Of course, my curiousity was peaked, as a 2hp.motor isnt that large... In a pile by the front, where I had walked past, was a planer that was half disassembled. Looked at the motor, saw a 5hp 1ph motor, Crowntop Craftsman! My eyes almost bugged out when I realized. The frame was the bottom half of a Foley-Belsaw 910. The cutterhead was sitting beside it, and the cover had the price. Once I confirmed it was for the whole thing (and I could get a hand loading), I happily put the lid into the pile. Total price on the machine...$20!!! I will be purting more pictures into the Crowntop thread. Separated the motor, stand, lower half, cutterhead and cover to load everything up.
I did finallly figure out they offered this specific combination from 77-79 (72-73 was when he motor was intrduced by itself, and plaer.was sold without a motor, or a smaller motor was offered). By the 81 catalog, the base of the planer went from CI to sheet metal. Price in catalog was over $1000, before shipping!
In between ferrying parts to the car, was chatting with the guy. They got the keys Tues for this.sale, and the client expected it to be cleaned out by the following Wed. There was a ton of old hardware, probably more money in scrap than what they sold.
On Sat, we headed out for a neighborhood "barn" sale. Usually have stopped hitting neighborhood sales as they arent worth it, but this was "rural" enough, figured we had a good shot. My wife ended up with a Van Gogh peint in professional frame, some milk glass (pitcher, goblets), and some other smalls. Son found a snow sled, backpack and other fun trinkets. And I found a dark purple Dazor magnifying lamp, floor size for only $5! A couple of Star Wars prints, and an archery taregt rounded out the finds for me.
Last Thurs, my son and I headed out to a sale which zi had seen advertised on CL. Lots of description, but no pics. It had been open since Wed, and not sure if there were more treasures there before...
Prices seemed to be all over. a sligjty rusty (but mostly dirty) 3D Remline roller was $5, but a 6d Snap On top (26" drop front) was $125. Poked around and slowly out together a pile. 1/4" Sao extension $1, Starrett Pocket dial gauge was $4, Mac Spraypaint holder was $4, and several .50cent thibgs dug out of a bin (Herbrand Screw starter, Central dial indicator, BB tube, mini hacksaw holder, flashlight, etc). Justrite rag wetter and bottle dispenser were combined for $11. Total, we spent $25 there.
And a shop clock for a $1 was the final purchase for that one.
Busy this weekend, so havent made it out.
