    building a deck need advice/help

Bolting the beam to the side of the post is a very bad idea! Notching the post (for single 2x's) or resting the beam on top of the post (for built up beams such as 3 2x's) is a far safer way to go. Use metal brackets in either case to further strengthen the post to beam joint.

I have a similar "Slow Children" sign. I kinda wanted to put it in my classroom when I was a Special Ed. teacher but I thought my boss might frown upon it... :dunno:

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT The 12-Gauge Garage

In my shop I was able to modify my more modern el-cheapo grinders for dust collection. The shop is more of a woodworking shop but I do do a modest amount of metal work and fabrication. So when I originally laid out the shop I plumed my dust collection system to each of my bench tools and my...

A GC might be able to answer this question.

I think you might find you are somewhat stuck in a catch 22. Many zoning codes let you build a certain size main building (Home and attached shop), just be cautious how you label the space. Call it a large garage. Insurance on the other hand will not like the idea of a large work space...

    vinyl tile removal

If those old tiles are 9" x 9" don't mess with them, they are most likely asbestos. If that is the case and the floor is sound (i.e. not bouncy) then I would use a modified thinset (read expensive) under my cement board. Of course you would screw it down as well...

Hobby Lobby - Garage / Man Cave Art

I am going to be hanging several of these signs on the outside of my shop this spring. The front of the shop is generally shaded and I'll clear coat them to help resist weathering. Anyone have any idea what kind of lifespan I can expect?

    Home Depot Clearance Thread 2015

I have a couple of these scaffolds (bought at tractor supply) and you can easily work on a ten or twelve foot ceiling with them. They can also be stacked to reach even higher. They are a bit wobbly so I bolt them together in addition to the spring snap lock. You can also order out rigger...

    PVC pipe air line explodes

I agree with you to a degree but in my area there are a lot of wells with very acidic water which simply dissolves metal pipes. In these cases unfortunately PEX with plastic fittings or CPVC are the only ways to go. (of course you would still want several feet of sacrificial copper pipe in the...

Planning 30x40 with 12 ft overhangs each side

I don't know where you are from but in most places look at impervious coverage when they are talking total allowable square footage. That means your overhang is part of your square footage. 12' walls are measured from your average ground level so if you are on a hill it is measured from the...

    found a jar of mercury?

Actually they do. ...and white eggs come from white chickens. (although there are some exceptions) Yet pastel blue, pink, and green eggs come from greyish brown chickens. Feed your chicken some mercury and you might get a metallic color egg???

    Shower door install question..

They make a tile bit similar to those posted by "tweeker" but they have a more arched carbide tip. Plug you drill (better yet go cordless) into a GFCI outlet and have a helper us a pump spray bottle to keep the tip wet as you drill your new holes. You can drill into grout lines or in the...
