Another One Gone - Wal Mart and Hart Split the Sheets

Hart Leaving WalMart In a vein similar to that of the ongoing FLEX debacle, I thought this news interesting. The HART line seems to be a just a little nicer than the traditional Skil/Black and Decker homeowner stuff that Wal Mart has traditionally carried I’ll not say I’m a HART groupie, but...

Upgrading and Downsizing my tool storage

I currently have a 42" Series 2 US General roll cab and top box with a side locker. Its a pretty decent box, but it's not set up wonderfully, with only one full width drawer. I find that I have several drawers that are simply full of "stuff." For a while, I have been wanting to trim down...

Using Old Tools for Old Junk

I have always felt like it makes for a more enjoyable hobby when you keep things period correct. I have never been a big "restomod" guy, for example. I like to modify cars and trucks, but I always try to use era-correct parts when appropriate. I know that I am in the minority on this sort of...

Meet Vic, the 47 Willys CJ2A....

A couple of years ago, I started to lose interest in loud and fast projects. I stumbled across across a pretty solid little 76 Jeep CJ5. I quickly remembered how much I loved working on and messing with old four wheel drives. I have had all manner of Scouts, full size Jeeps, and XJs, but I had...

    ICON Socket——color me unimpressed

I bought some ICON sockets as filler for places I haven’t filled with quality sockets yet. They look good, and they seemed to be decent enough. I bought some new/different wheels and tires for my F150. There were a couple of lug nuts that were too tight for my impact to take off, so I grabbed...

    Williams vs Wright Wrenches

I am working toward upgrading my entire box to tool truck or industrial tools. My next step is SAE combo wrenches. for roughly the same money, I can buy Wright or Williams 15pc SAE wrench sets. My inclination is to go with Williams...but other than the Snap-On connection, I can't really tell you...

    Packard 1/3hp Motor Wiring

I am working on a Craftsman 103.23590 bench top drill press, and it had a Packard 110v 1/3hp motor on it. When I picked the press up, the motor worked but the wiring was crusty. In my infinite wisdom, I disassembled it to clean and paint the case ...and neglected to mark the wires as where...

    Die only set?

I have a LOT of good US taps, both carbon and HSS, but I am pretty skinny on dies. Does anyone sell a set of good dies, without the taps? I know I can piece them together, but often times buying kits is cheaper. HSS is definitely preferred, but a good set of carbon would do most of what I need.

    Pedestal Grinder ID

I picked up some pretty substantial pedestal grinders in an auction. I've identified one as a Baldor and another as a Walker Turner. I am having trouble identifying the remaining grinder. It's 3 phase, but the ID plate is worn almost completely smooth. Any ideas?http://imgur.com/a/9tZmN4c...

    South Bend Lathe help

I have been casually looking for a lathe to add to the shop, something I can learn on, just another skill to play with. I ran across this machine somewhat locally, and can pick it up for very little outlay. The seller knows very little about it, seems to have inherited it. The biggest concern...

    Frigid Pedestal Fan cord

I have an old Frigid 342G pedestal fan that I bought years ago, and absolutely love. Today, I wasnt thinking, and plugged it onto a much to long cord while I was wiring my new shop building. Before long, I smelled the magic smoke...and managed to catch it before anything caught on fire. That...

    Cardinal SpeedVise

While out checking out garage sales, I ran across this yesterday. I have been looking for a good drill press vise for a while, and a bit of Googling told me this was definitely a good one. Its a Cardinal 8B Speedvise. The seller had it marked at $55. A little negotiation, and I carried it home...

    Moving a Delta Rockwell 17

I am going to pick up a pristine Delta 17 drill press tomorrow, and am curious as the best way to move it. Are these built where I can drop the table and the head down the column to lower the center of gravity? If not, any pointers? Its a huge press with a gigantic production table.

    Not Cheap Pocket Knives

The trend here lately seems to be toward cheaper knives, I thought I would start a thread for those who prefer slightly more high end stuff. What do you carry? What do you want? My daily carry seems to be cyclical. I will carry one for a while, then another for some reason. I am an unabashed...

    Decent Screwdriver Set

I have a set of Wera KraftForms, and I love them. The rest of drawer is filled with random Craftsmans, VA, etc...I would like to buy one set of decent, mid to lower price, quality screwdrivers to replace them randoms. American made is preferred, but others considered. I figure that a set of...

Chicago Power Tool Drill Press (Not HF)

Im looking at this drill press, as its local. Its seems to be pretty solid, I just cant find much on the company. I assume, based on the date, that its US made. Anyone have any info on this thing? http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/for/3703609958.html

    Hitachi 10.8c vs Milwaukee M12

I had a Milwaukee M12 1/4 Impact that I absolutely loved...till someone borrowed it, and let it sit in water. It ruined the im[pact and one of the batteries. Now I have one Red Lithium battery, a charger, and one of the kick *** jobsite radios. I went to buy a bare tool and battery to replace...
