I've had my Matco tap and die set for a couple years now. It's paid for it self many times over with repairs to **** that gets messed up easily. One thing I always wondered is on the tool part there is piece that slides open/close. Held by three thumb screws. What is this for and what does...

What is this silver piece on cable clamp pilers?

Wanted to pick up a set of cable actuated clamp pliers. It came with a silver piece that has a small hole in it and is threaded. I looked on Sears and couldn't find any information on it. Looks like a cable would go through it but both ends are crimped on the tool... Sorry for a blurry...

Door hinges. Ball bearing or Plain bearing?

I asked a question about chisels in the tool section since I'm going to be mortising a new door in a week or two. That got me thinking about replacing all the ugly gold color hinges and hardware in the house since it's starting to get colder which gives me a little project to do. I like the...

School me on chisels please. (wood working)

I'm going to be installing a slab door in our laundry room to replace the crappy door that is there now. It's nothing crazy just a door that has a glass pane and says "laundry" on it. Looks quaint. I've never installed a door before but I don't suspect it being TOO hard. My biggest concern...

Sink Faucets: 1, 2, 3 hole design. Which is preferred?

To touch on with the laundry room since I just did the tile floor, of cource it doesn't seem to stop. We are getting a granite counter top installed in the laundry room to replace the laminate that is in there now. Surprisingly we found granite that matches almost to the T of what is in our...

First time tiling, have some questions.

I am planning on tiling our laundry room this weekend. It's not big at all. The tiles I have are about 16" in length and about a foot wide. Total tiles I have are 24 which will be more than enough to do the room. They were given to me because they are extra from a friend that just did his...

Best way to clean grease out of plastic transmission? (push lawnmower)

So in the final stages of fixing up my dad's lawn mower he gave me. I figured I would clean out the transmission. It's a Husqvarna 7021r self propelled rear wheel drive lawn mower. The rear transmission is your standard run of the mill one found in many many mowers. I took apart the two...

How does one make a "round" type of deck/wood structure?

Silly question I'm sure to the guys on here that do amazing work with woodworking. I'll get pictures of my shed later today when I get home but I wanted to add a sort of round/ovalish type of side platform so that I can put plants/small garden so it's not on the grass. I have a attached a...

Is this safe for hanging a porch swing? (pics of hardware/joist)

Recently picked up a porch swing and now I want to hang it under our deck. I've read many things online and I can't seem to find a 100% sure answer. I've seen how to's using just an eye bolt that screws into the ceiling joist and then they hang the chain off that then attach the swing and call...

I actually did good this craigslist find..one w00t!

The other day my neighbor started hacking away at his tree branches. Cut a bunch off, about the length of a car, put them on the street and figured the garbage guys would put it in the truck... Needless to say they didn't and that **** stayed on the street for over a week. He finally got some...

Have a question on wiring an outlet/switch off an existing one (pics).

So I would like to add a switch that goes to an led flat panel light fixture (20 watt) that is in an new area I just cleaned up. There is an outlet that is on the other side of the wall (4"-5") and I can see the new work box after cutting a small hole in the wall. I simply want to do the...

Has anyone made storage under their staircase? I have a couple questions (pictures)

Figured I'd ask before I start and realize that I should not do this. Our house is a standard 2 story with basement. The staircase appears to be in one central spot meaning that if you are downstairs and walk up, you go to a landing, turn right, go up steps, then at the first floor. Turn...

What tool do I need/use to crimp this connector?

I just got an adaptor for my Motive bleeder. I have the original that came before their quick connect/fittings. I ordered the kit which is just two pipe fittings and it came with two metal crimps. I don't even know how to crimp this? Seems like a hose clamp would be fine but figured I'll use...

    Anyone have T-handle speeders?

I've got a gift card for Amazon and figure might as well buy something. These caught my eye. T-handle speeders. I have normal SO speeders that but they are much larger. These actually seem like I'd use them on my motorcycle or other stuff. I'm torn between two that look pretty much...

    Giant Gift Card $100

I have a $100 Giant Foods gift card. I have no use for this since we don't shop at Giant. I do however shop at Lowes and would actually prefer if someone had a $100 Lowes gift card and we could just trade. I want to buy a snow blower and would apply the gift card to it. Locals welcome as...

Outdoor electrical box gang size? What am I missing?

Adding an outlet where there is an existing gang box outside. Take off the cover and it's rusty and the screw is broken off inside. No worries, just go to HD to pick up another one. I measured the threaded holes and they are very close to to 3/4" I go pick up a 3/4" without taking the older...

Time to upgrade lights in my garage, are these t8 fixtures OK?

I had no plans on upgrading the light in the garage until I just added an extra 4 t12 florescent light fixture and noticed how much more light it gave me... Now I want to replace both Edison sockets that are running 5 CFL bulbs each for a cleaner ceiling mounted look. I only got the bug to do...

Costco sells LED t8/t12 led tubes...anyone use them yet?

I know we have a hundred threads on the Feit ceiling lights but I was in Costco yesterday and they have a WHOLE stack of 4' LED tubes. 1700 lumens per bulb, only 4000k though, not daylight. No rewire and works in t12/t8 fixtures. Anyone try or use them? What do you think, worth it? -Nigel
