Salvage my water heater with plugged drain?

I have a water heater that wasn't drained yearly and now there's a rumbling sound when it turns on to heat the tank (because someone is using hot water). I tried to drain it and initially nothing came out. I found a lot of sediment in the drain so I used a coat hanger (no avail), and then went...

Tool chest on wheels with electronics locks?

Looking if there is a tool chest on wheels that does this. I have a Gladiator type today which is a 7 drawer on wheels about waist high. It has a lock on the top which is rather cheap and would like a way to lock per drawer or the whole setup so I don't have to carry a key. Not sure if there...

Shelf LAG bolt removal and re-insertion

If I had a strong shelf and I removed the lag bolts and then re-inserted new ones (or the same bolt)into the same hole (same size as before) and put the shelf back would that cause any concerns? Reason I'm doing this is I have some metal 24" depth shelves that can carry a heavy load (though I'm...

Door unlocks but does not go to unlocked mode

I have a door with a typical door lock that has the solid dowel handle type. If I turn it up 45 degrees or down it will unlock the lock. It can actually go up to 90 degrees either way. I can turn it any direction and it will let me open the door from the inside. However, sometimes it will...

Smaller wall vents or fan inserts?

In California where I'm trying to keep dust and little insects from venturing into the garage through my garage vents. Was considering getting a screen with a smaller mesh size and overlay it over the existing mesh as most of the mesh I've seen online more or less appear to be the same size...

Why a single outlet in garage box?

Garage has electrical boxes behind sheetrock. Curious why they put a single in one part of the garage? 15A breaker controls two electrical boxes. The ceiling has a dual outlet with one connection for the Garage Door Opener. The other connection is not being used. The wall of the garage...

Spax Lag screws Hex vs. T-washer head

I've used the spax and GRK T-washer head to build some shelving in the past that attaches to studs through sheetrock. Now, looking at some pre-made shelves and (this time bought one with pre-made brackets). Shelves are 2' x 6' and the brackets stick out from the wall 2'. Is there any benefit...

Building a shed next to garage

Hi all, Thinking that building a wood shed next to my house-garage is a no-no due to termites. Building a metal or some sort of vinyl one is a better option. I have a small space and the commercial ones out there don't really fit or are out of stock so thinking about doing it myself. Shed...

    Insulating pipes through sheetrock

Figuring best way to insulate some extra space around my water softener pipes exiting the garage through the sheetrock. Some are copper pipes and the other is plastic. Water guys said just leave it be. Foam? Grommets? Spackling? Open to what others have done. Been leaning towards foam at...

Wire Rope for a shelf base

Anyone make a shelf base out of wire rope? Have already hanged some shelves from all threads in the ceiling. I would like to create the shelves to have a mesh base (i.e. instead of plywood as the base of the shelves). Local Home Depot has coated welded wire which is too weak which is why I'm...

Makita brushless stuck in hammer mode

Anyone have this problem where the drill still works, and I can add/remove drill bits to the chuck, but I can't change the drill out of hammer-drill mode? The dial will move like a 1/4" inch, but will not rotate to drill or driver mode. Stays in hammer drill mode. Thanks for any workarounds...

Spax Lag spin out in sheetrock to stud

Anyone have this problem? Or recommendations? I'm using 1/4" x 4" SPAX lags into a wall in the garage wall which on the other side is a room in my house. I'm hanging some metal racks on the garage and on certain studs it does a spin out when all the way in. Others are fine and it's solid...

    Unistrut Loft in the Garage?

Anyone build a loft for storage in the garage? For storage mainly, but strong enough to walk around for a short period of time when you're looking for stuff or organizing. Figured would need some standoffs to the cement floor for support. Curious if anyone did and if you have pictures of...

    blue from sheetrock holes?

I removed an MDF shelf on the sheetrock wall of the garage. I puttied the screw holes and that was fine. Then I saw several pinholes behind it spaced sort of evenly apart. I put putty on it and it appeared to come out with a blue stain that almost seemed like it came from the hole itself as...

    Craftsman screwdrivers/phillips?

I thought I read somewhere that Craftsman are not what they used to be? Just saw a good deal on a 17 piece set under $20. Any other preferred sets? Don't mind paying more for quality and less bruised knuckles...

    Ceiling Storage recommendations?

Thinking of just using 2x4 and creating a shelf across the garage above the garage door going wall-to-wall. Lots of youtube videos of others doing this. Any other suggestions? Looking to put a lot of things that I don't use often. Above the garage railing it's about 6' up to the ceiling...

Workbench depths from Gladiator, Craftsman, etc.

Always used workbenches with much more depth (or width i.e. 6' x 3') as opposed to most of these nice systems like Gladiator that usually only offers something in the range up to 20" deep. Anyone find this being too small for them? I may just need to adapt to this size, or make my own.
