Anyone ever done a garage extension?

Re: Anyone ever done a garage extenison? I'm adding on as well, three+ car addition to the existing two car. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110219 Issues: connecting to the old one, getting the floor or rafter heights to match, roof/gutter/doors etc. Coming together...

Welcome, hope you're enjoying the heat! Browse the garages section, you can get a bunch of ideas from drooling at other guys' shops. And don't be afraid of shooting the breeze and knocking back a few cold ones with your buddies at your build site. I've picked up a couple of great ideas that way.

Drywall texture time... need some advice

That's a really cool idea, Zeke! Putting that one in the mental inventory for sure. The HF mudgun worked fine, using watered-down premix. Put down a medium knockdown, which dried to knocking thickess almost immediately over the new sheetrock and dry mud. Took much much longer over the old...

    Kyle242GT's three-car addition (five total)

The far left door is 16x7, center is 10x9, and the old garage will get a 18.5x7. The idea was to have the left and right doors be the same height, and the center door have the same top level as the right. Hoping to tie it all together. It's a mixed blessing having different front angles...

Drywall texture time... need some advice

Lots of great advice here, thanks gang! going to try orange peel, less material and knockdown effort. Good call on it getting dry before completely knocked, was wondering about that in the back of my mind.... especially with it being nearly 100F these days.

Drywall texture time... need some advice

Thanks for that. Been leaving the windows open, and even then, having my face in a bucket of mud for a few hours does indeed getting a little foggy. You do need to prime the mud/texture from what I've been told, it's too porous and will really **** in the paint.

Drywall texture time... need some advice

Was wondering about that too. Hadn't heard of rolling texture until today's research (such as it is). But... With the shop project up next, seems like a good time to get a texture gun and learn to use it. Thanks for the feedback!

Drywall texture time... need some advice

you and me both, brother. I'm thinking of the quickest, easiest, cheapest way to get a satisfactory finish coat. Would my 9" taping knife not work for knockdown? I've used a 5" previously with good results. Will orange peel hide the transition from old to new? It's "only" 100SF, so I was...

Drywall texture time... need some advice

Hi all - Not garage related, except that this is a bit of a practice run for finishing the inside of my shop once it's complete. I'm remodeling a bathroom, and am at the point of finishing the drywall for paint. I've done a couple of skim coats, and screen-sanded smooth. It's almost...

    Kyle242GT's three-car addition (five total)

Hi Jeph- the lift is an ancient two post, the name of which escapes me, which I'm getting on trade from a local shop. Fresh pics! Whole house paint, finish grade in the backyard too! Nice little side benefits to this monster project. Roof and stucco this week if all goes according to plan.

Is this rust fatal to a car?

holy ****! I had to scroll sideways to read the model year... I figured maybe it was a 62 and you were trying to decide if it was a restoration candidate.

    Demolished cost....

You've probably thought this through, but why not revise your plans to use the building? Or at least temporary use? That's going to be a lot of debris.

Framing's begun in earnest. Really cool to stand in there, rest my elbows on the sill, and mutter "yup" to myself. My 9 year old is happily gathering nails from the surrounding area. Bet that will last a while.

Slab's done, took three truckloads, 25yd. Felt pretty good walking around in my "garage" for the first time today. Something about all that concrete making it official... grading was just dirt. The last picture is an attempt to show the work area created by the angle between new and old...

    Kyle242GT's three-car addition (five total)

Framing's supposed to start next week, so once the slab and stemwall are in, things should move along a little faster. There was a delay while figuring out how to deal with high groundwater in the footing trench. I'll have a doorway only. While having the space completely open would probably...
