    The VISES of Garage Journal

I just picked up one of these, I can't see what's holding the spindle in place and don't really want to strip it of it's original paint to try and work it out. Can you offer some insight please?

I'm afraid the vise is missing the base so weight would be null and void, it's something I need to get around to making so at least it's functional. Jaw width is just shy of 2.5 inch.

excellent info  I'm not blessed with the knowledge that you and some of the other vise guru's have so it's great to catch snippets on this forum. If you need more pics shout up.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Right, I can work with that  Just need to decide on the vice to use. Kinda want to put a Reed 206 on it but as that's a swivel base it sort of defeats the object of a stand. It'll need to be something pretty big and something I don't mind putting to use :headscrat

Question for the vice stand owners/fabricators. If making a stand how do you determine the height of the stand so that the vice is at a suitable working height? I've got my hands on a big sprocket which I'll be fabricating a stand with so could do with some guidance.

Love the old pages. $170 of todays money would buy a nickel Stevens on a swivel base, now that's a nice pipe dream :)

I'd polish it up a bit and leave bare metal. Very interesting for me to see all the other parts, I have a No 23 here in the UK which makes it pretty rare but I'm missing some of the bolt through parts and a collar. If anyone has parts for one and are prepared toship to the Uk please let me...

1NRO: your vise looks a lot like my late 1800's Massey so i'm curious what more you can find out about yours. here's my Massey and maybe you'll agree it has some similarities? cheers and nice find It certainly looks to be very close. Just the mounting holes for a base on mine make it...

Love the wood working vise Jim. A Sheldon you reckon, that must make this one I just picked up the same. The only script on it is No 7 stamped into the handle boss. It's missing a swivel base, I'd love to see a picture of what it should have if anyone has info.

I was pleased to get it, original paint in decent condition and nearly perfect jaws. My favourite is the Vono clamp on though it does have a piece missing out of the round slide. Maybe that makes the wrought iron swiveling clamp on the best piece.... not sure really, I like them all

I've not posted for a while but still I buy the occasional vise:dunno: I've had a few others in recent times which are in the workshop but these are hanging about in the living room but not for much longer apparently!! all clamp-on other than the ball vice at the bottom, a decent mix methinks.
