3 wire dryer plug. new tenant has 4 wire dryer??

Maybe. Most appliances like dryers are interchangeable to a point. The manual will have the final say. Get the model # of the dryer and look up the compatibility. The dryer should adapt to the receptacle style, as you can only provide 3 prong. Providing 4 prongs with a missing wire is a...

This was the scenario I had in my head when I posted my reply.

    A/C Outlet Underwater

Within a small radius of that one outlet that has a neutral and ground wire within a few inches of the 120VAC line, possible. see my link to the electroboom blog above. I could list a whole list of why it's not THAT dangerous to have a single submerged outlet in "fresh" water, but will probably...

    Beer fridge trippin

New code requires kitchen circuits to be BOTH AFCI/GFCI. :tantrum2: My sub panel for the kitchen has full length neutrals, so it will be easy to change out an AFCI/GFCI with a normal breaker if that time of desperation comes. As a ham radio operator having AFCI breakers installed, I fear for...

How much did electric cost you?

It all depends on cost of materials and how you plan on finishing the project. If you plan on doing what the guy above did with boxes every 6 feet, look in to bulk discounts and ordering supplies from greybar or mcmaster... Home depot isn't going to give you a big price cut even if you hit...

Inverter vs UPS for backup power

yeah, okay, in the industrial sector, fast cut-over times are fast, but that 10 seconds needs to be filled by SOMETHING, and that is where a UPS comes in, either a large system sold as a solution, or a component system built with parts. But, in the end, we're talking about residential...

Inverter vs UPS for backup power

It depends on your wants and needs. Yes, most ATS will have starter contacts, but you'll have 30-90 seconds of downtime in between losing grid and generator clicking over. Thats where inverters like this come in. Providing your own batteries, you can scale as you desire. In the end, the...

Inverter vs UPS for backup power

The unit I linked to passes through in real time. The purpose of this unit is to provide seamless backup power to a small array of protected circuits while the larger generator fires up in the background. When power is cut, and the generator takes 30 seconds to start and stabilize before the...

Inverter vs UPS for backup power

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHNCQ00/?tag=atomicindus08-20 Look in to split phase inverters. Automatic charging and cut-over, remote displays and status monitors, and even generator startup signals. http://invertersrus.com/product/aims-picoglf60w24v240vs/ If I had the spare cash, I'd build...

    EMT grounding

I added a bonding bushing to my 2" EMT that feeds my 40 space sub-panel. I don't trust lock nuts against a painted surface to catch a 200A fault. For the 3/4 emt out of the sub, I have a ground wire. Overkill for home use, but I sleep easier. I guess in 20-30 years, the new owner will also...

How much wire goes into a new house?

If you're starting new, the cost to provision a generator input is so minor. I added a standby interlock kit and a 30A breaker to my main panel from day one. It's easy to provision it now, than to try to retrofit later. I also got my inspection completed with the interlock in place. :)

How much wire goes into a new house?

It was much cheaper to run a 100A sub over to a garage wall than it was to home run the Kitchen stuff back to the main.... Who wants to stub 10 extra 12/2 lines in to a 40 space panel anyway. hah

How much wire goes into a new house?

Call me old fashioned, but I want a clear delineation between low and high voltage. I don't fully trust the 5v line in a 120v circuit. I totally get the Idea, but am not convinced yet. But, Id start here if I ever gave in...

How much wire goes into a new house?

I'm having my electrician do exactly this. We're remodeling damn near the whole house, and had a sit-down. We're agreed on 12awg everywhere (no 14 with exception for the smoke/co alarms. Each room will have it's own 20A breaker for lights and general outlets. Master gets a dedicated light...

How much wire goes into a new house?

In the long run, it's not much of a cost to have 12 awg romex installed everywhere. (minus the big stuff like the over / jacuzzi tub) For the home depot price of a 1000' reel, it's worth the extra few bucks for the yellow romex.

Quick question about grounding in conduit

Nothing wrong with that. If it helps you sleep at night, do it. I have a few circuits connected using 3/4" emt. I did not use a grounded bushing in the sub-panel, so I feel much safer running a 12awg ground for each circuit +pigtails in the outlet boxes. I probably don't need 3 grounds, but...

    Electricity & Pluming

I bet you approached this with the mindset of, "what does code require?". I'm sure you had no issue wiring everything up, but I would also wager that you read building and plumbing code until you understood fully. I know when I upgraded my service from 100A to 200A, I read PGE's greenbook a...
