    Hydraulic Lift Math....

Anyone have any ideas on books or pdf's about how much a hydraulic cylinder can lift? What I mean is, if a cylinder can lift 10K lbs but has a 24" stroke and you use it in a scissor lift that lifts 48", does that mean the lift has a 5k lb capacity? Also, to lift more, is it better to go with a...

    Automotive Oscilloscope

Been looking to get an oscilloscope for diagnosing car sensors and other things. It wont be used to make money so spending thousands for a color Fluke is out of the question. It seems logical that scopes that work with a laptop or tablet would give the most features for the lowest price but I...

    Magnetic Starters, what I learned.

I have a "project" air compressor. 80gal tank, two stage pump, 5 hp 3 phase motor. I bought a single phase 5 hp Baldor off ebay, installed it and learned a lot about industria equipment and how things are done in that kind of field. I've worked on a lot of cars and trucks, but not so much...

    80 gallon tank fill time?

Hey all, I have upgraded my compressor, by upgrade I mean bigger capacity, if I can get it to work right haha. I used to have a big box store type single stage two piston 60 gal set up. It was more quiet than my cheapo Costco oiless but it couldn't keep up while working on my caterpillar or...

    Pitted air cylinder sealing???

Hey all, I've got a "Homestead Hoist model 3". I bought it at an estate sale. I tore it apart and am cleaning it all up but it sat outside for who knows how long and the cylinder that the piston rides in has some pitting. My question to you all is, has anyone used Jb weld to smooth up pitted...

    In ground lifts?

I've got a line on an in ground lift from an old service station. It is operated by an air compressor pressurizing the hydraulic oil. The seller bought out the whole old service station and has been selling things off for a while. There were two lifts in the ground and he installed one in his...

    Overalls, bang for the buck

Looking for a pair of coveralls like I used to wear in the 80's but cant remember the brand names that were good. I don't want them to be too thin so that oil and atf just soaks through, but I don't want them so tight that you cant reach up while laying on a creeper. Not really for warmth at...

    Pole depth

I thinking about attempting to put an addition on my pole barn. The ground slopes down into the pole barn and if I added one more section out from the ridge line It would stop the rain from getting into the pig pens. The poles would need to be 10' 6" out of the ground. What is the ratio for 6X6...

What makes a good vice good?

Some good vices are really expensive. What makes a $350.00 six inch vice cost that much, besides being made in the U.S.A.? Do certain types stay better longer? If you're not talking machinist vices is there a need for a mechanic shop vice to have tight tolerances? If you needed a vice you...

VFD on a 3phs air compressor, tips?

I got a variable frequency drive to hook my three phase air compressor up to my single phase power and was wondering if anyone has done this and has tips or advice. VFD's in home shop use

Hey everybody, I don't have ANY vfd experience and was wondering how they are set up in a "home shop". Is it required that each machine has it's own vfd, or can several machines be hooked to it as long as one machine at a time is used? Also, If you have a 5hp vfd because you're eventually going...

    18V Li batteries, the same?

Last time I was at Home Depot I noticed that the Makita and other batteries looked like they'd slide right into my Bosch drill. The 12v too. When I got home I took a second look at my batteries and saw that there are several slots on the batteries where metal contact points meet the drill...

    Metal roof full of holes

My "shop" is a pole barn with metal roof. It leaks all over. Mostly because the some of the screws were put in at an angle. Bought it this way, I would have put the screws in the high part of the roof and not the part where the water runs down also. Possibly the rubber grommets are dried out and...

    Jack questions....

I got these jacks at an estate sale. They went cheap because no body could figure out if they worked. I knew the experts here would know how to breathe life into them again. I'm having my wife put pictures of them on here because I still cant figure out how to do it, so I'll have her post them...
