Where to start with half built garage? So many Questions!

Just bought a new to me place on Vancouver Island. It has a garage started, but needs a lot. The more I spend on the garage, the less I have for my solar and house upgrades, so trying to keep it on a budget, but can spend when it makes sense. It has a great foundation, and stays dry inside...

Removing rust from chain vise grips?

I have several chain vice grips, and they all have rust on the chains. I used some rust remover stuff for one pair a while ago, and it worked like a hot damn, but they have since become the rustiest pair by a long shot. So I guess I need to know how to remove the rust, and then not have it...

    Desktop CNC mill/router?

I am looking for a CNC mill, and am budget conscience. I'd really love 4 or 5 axis, but I realize that 3 is really the only cost effective answer. I NEED to be able to do aluminium at least 3/4" thick. And would like to do thin stainless, like 1mm thick, basically enough to hold it's own...

How do you plane a 36" wide slab of wood?

So I am trying to build a couple things with some nice huge slabs of hardwood. 8' long and 36" wide... Now I can find some industrial planers that large, but wow are they expensive. I wanted to make a CNC engraver/router anyways. And was thinking maybe I could use a CNC router to thickness...

My wife seems to leave the garage door open once a week and I always catch it by wonder why the garage heater seems to have been running way too long  I can figure out the how to get the garage to trip a relay or whatever part. What I am having a hard time with is what do I do in the...

Lighting for a low ceiling garage?

Normally I am pretty good at picking out lighting options for a garage. But my neighbor has asked me to help light his garage, 24x24 with a 8'8" ceiling. He really likes my main lights, but I have 12' ceiling in my garage so the two 4 bulb t5ho high bay with reflectors work well. But his...

Putting a 30'x20' Garage on existing pad? Cost effective way?

Sister in law and her husband are not very handy, and since I am not working right now asked if I could build them a garage for a concrete pad on their new to them acreage. I immediately was thinking 12' walls, scissor truss, and a 100A sub panel. But then remembered they will only every park...

    Sika Crack Fix, not hardening?

So I bought some Sika Crack fix, to fix a small crack in my walkway, probably 3' long and 1/4" wide. I jammed some rubber moulding into the crack so I wouldn't lose it all and then filled the crack up. The first third and last third of the crack are solid, rock hard. but the center is like a...

Drywalling... Does doing the ceiling first really matter?

Not garage, but basement. I really want to start finishing my space with drywall, and reading online they say to do the ceiling first. But I'm not really ready to commit to closing off the ceiling yet. Is doing the walls first going to make a difference?

Sweeping aluminum shavings... There has to be a better way.

I make lots of things from aluminum, and drill lots of holes, but cleaning up the shavings *****. I use a normal broom because that's what I have, but it's simply not effective and every other time you use the broom it's dropping little shavings. Is my broom just cheap? Or is there a better way?

    Removing surface rust?

I have a little bit of surface rust on everything metal in my garage. My bench tops, drill press, etc. How do I remove this rust? I never had rust until I etched my garage floor with hydrochloric acid, I am sure it's the vapors that caused the rust. And then what is something that isn't...

Welding screen as "curtain" for shelves?

So I have lots of storage shelves in my garage, but didn't plan in a way to protect things from dust and making it look good. And I am looking for a couple welding screens, and came across a 75 yard roll of welding curtain. Gave me the thought that maybe I could stretch it onto a couple frames...

Cutting fluid for stainless and Aluminium?

Been drilling a lot of stainless at work lately, and it *****. I have rapid tap, but it really doesn't seem like it does much besides make some smoke. Also always have drilled aluminium a lot, and even with rapid tap I feel like the bits just don't last as long as I think they should. It's...

Shed help, ran into an issue with my fireplace exhaust.

Trying to build a shed between my house and my fence. Simple enough. But after some thought I want to make it larger, so now my problem is I run into a bay that houses my gas fireplace and it's exhaust. It's also a cantilever so have the space under the bay too. I'd love to just keep it 4"...

Garage door is noisy, it's not the opener though. Can I fix it?

My garage door makes quite the racket opening and closing, kinda creaks and groans. They are fiberglass panels on metal tracks. If I use the disconnect cord and open and close it manual it still makes the same noise. I am convinced it is the wheels/hinges. I have dried every kind of lube...

Painted floor failing. Repaint or a tile?

I painted my garage floor with rustoleum garage floor paint last summer, and the winter did a number on it. Where it was driven on and where the melted snow pooled is where the paint was highly affected, and some edges still look like they want to peal up. I just washed and let the...

    Bicycle parking?

Does anyone have a good design or idea for parking of bikes in the garage? I have limited room to park 3 bikes (two adult, 1 childs). Over the winter I hand them on the wall out of the way. But this is a huge hassle for the summer when we use the bikes a lot. It does not help that the two adult...

I tried to get a picture, but hard to see whats going on. But when my garage door is closed, there is a 1" gap in the center at the top, it's tight on the edges though, and opens up to 1" in the center. How do I fix this?

    Portable sandblaster... controlling mess.

So I bought a little portable sand blasting gun to blast a few parts on my jeep as prep for welding. But I can not believe the mess it makes. Is there a good way to contain the mess a little bit? Or a media that won't bother my grass at least? I have copper slag media right now, works damn good.
